  1. It's Fall of 2014 and Ilya Rozanov has cut all ties with Russia. But there's no such thing as a clean break, and leaving isn't as simple as never going back.
    -
Basically a very self-indulgent fic about how hard it would be for Ilya to actually move on from the pain of the past and to go no contact with his family in a timeline where Grigori is still alive. Also, Ilya deserves to be known and loved by more people than just Shane and Sveta. Forced/Found Family here we come.
*Sequel to my canon-divergence fic "To only ever know the cold" (go read that first or this won't make sense!)

  2. Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.

Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.

His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.

But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"

By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.

But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…

    Shane says yes.

And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.

  3. Ilya wakes up in the early afternoon, in his underwear, with a dry mouth, a crick in his neck, and loud, incessant banging. It takes him longer than he is proud to admit to realize that it’s coming from his front door. He gets up and immediately regrets it. His living room is a mess and the light coming in from the window makes him wince. He does not want to clean today. What he had wanted was a rare, quiet night. Maybe text Hollander to rile him up after his loss the day before. Instead, Marly insisted on coming home with him after his girlfriend dumped him, so he could drown his sorrows. He remembers making some questionable choices after that, and if the state of the house is any indication, he is right.

Oh, that fucker. What did he forget here?

“Marly, you fucking asshole, I swear if you don’t stop—” Fuck. His head. How much did he drink last night? “Couldn’t you wait until practice tomorrow to get—” He opens the door. A small child is looking up at him.

Or: The day before the Tuna Melt Ilya Rozanov finds a child at his door.

  5. Shane Hollander has built himself around routine, his life blood is hockey. Struggling to understand his team off the ice and the people around him, he carves out a few silent hours to himself. It's just him and his skates. But the hard fought peace is fragile, like cracks in too thin ice. It only takes a slight impact to shatter. Shane is fighting to hold his team and himself together as everything comes crashing down around him.

Someone hacks into Rose Landry's phone in a club, they then release the images of Shane's texts online and all hell breaks loose. Shane is left to pick up the pieces. Ilya makes some choices in the aftermath that change everything. Shane decides to stop hiding and Ilya is a possessive asshole who makes it everyone else's problem. With far less reason to hide himself anymore, Shane begins to show more of who he really is behind the polite, media worthy façade. They instead find a team who are ready to fight the world for each other and a found family that has far reaching threads.

Maybe Shane can have both Hockey and Ilya. The world will just have to deal with it.

  6. There’s still a big part of him that wants all the same things he used to. The hockey, those other interests, the simplicity of the smaller circle. But there’s a twinge of something else now beside it when he considers it for too long, a bruise he can’t place the origins of. He’d been able to put somewhat of a name to it, after Rose.

He only wishes he hadn’t filled in the rest of the blanks staring down at a grainy photograph of Svetlana Vetrova in a convenience store parking lot in Boston, a bag hanging off of her manicured finger just transparent enough to make out the logo of a First Response as she’d ducked into a sleek, black sports car, driving away with Shane's best worst would-have-been and, presumably, Ilya Rozanov's baby.

Shane feels no particular way about this turn of events. He really, honestly, mostly is somewhat close to believing that, too. It's progress.

  7. Ilya had two nephews. That’s the fact that kept running around his head.

When Ilya gets a phone call about his brother's death, he is determined to do whatever it takes to keep his family together. Even if it means for a short while, his new family has to be apart.

  8. Ilya wasn’t trying to kill himself that night. Suicide is something that belongs to his mother- he’s just lazy, and he wishes Shane would stop making excuses for him.

Shane has everything under control. His body is a tool, the one that’s given him both his career and his relationship, and he wishes Ilya would stop prying into the way he maintains it.

or: Ilya learns a whole lot more about his mother, Shane remembers a whole lot more about his childhood, and they both get diagnosed.

  9. “What makes you so confident you can handle him when Montreal couldn’t?” A reporter asks.

“Because he actually listens to me. Montreal didn’t have a damn clue how to handle guys like him. Me? Oh, I already got this kid under my thumb.”

Once celebrated as the NHL’s most promising young player, Shane Hollander’s rookie season collapses after brutally attacking a teammate during a nationally televised playoff game, leaving him suspended, publicly disgraced, and traded to the Boston Raiders.

Months later, Shane arrives in Boston determined to keep his head down and prove himself. But Ilya Rozanov has already taken an unsettling interest in him.

  11. "You signed with the LA Kings?" she demanded. "What were you thinking? You know the plan. We'd go to the draft, get first pick, and go to Montreal."

"What are you even talking about?" Shane shot back. "If I got first pick, I'd go to Boston, not Montreal. And I don't even want to go to Montreal."

"Why?" Mom asked immediately. "They're one of the best teams in the league. One of the Original Six."

Something inside him snapped, and before he even realized it, he switched to Japanese.

"I don't know," he said, his voice tight. "Maybe because they're full of racists and homophobes. Do you even understand what I'm saying? Or have you become so white you forgot your own language?"

Nobody moves for a moment as Shane stares the woman down, and he’s seconds away from sawing the damn thing off himself, when the woman nods to the men surrounding the hybrid. And then there’s a flurry of movement, a clicking sound and then the men stand back to reveal Ilya in his bare faced glory, unobstructed by the muzzle.

Shane takes him in, inhaling softly at the sharp cheekbones, the moles dusted over his face, the pillowy lips that are set in a firm, displeased line. Shane wonders how big his fangs are. If he was a fighter, they must have been sharpened regularly.

Shane doesn’t want to think about the damage this wall of a hybrid had inflicted on others, the damage he could inflict on Shane. The hybrid stares at him, expression hard to determine but the intensity of it has Shane holding back a shiver. He’s staring at Shane like he can see every thought inside of him, calculating. As if they were on opposing sides of a ring, ready for the bell to chime and for Ilya to go in for the kill.

Shane gets roped into fostering a troublesome hybrid with a bad track record. Except what begins as a cordial arrangement turns into something much more complicated.

  14. Ilya. He is still sleeping fitfully in Irina’s bed, face crumpled and lips turned down. Irina leans over him and presses a single kiss to the crease between his eyebrows, and then leans back just enough to watch Ilya’s big, blue eyes blink open at her. She holds a finger against her lips, waiting until Ilya nods before she straightens up and beckons him to get out of bed. When Ilya is standing, Irina helps him into a clean sweater, his coat, scarf, and hat. Ilya looks terribly confused, but allows himself to be dressed like a toddler, watching his mother curiously but without question. He is twelve years old, certainly old enough to dress himself, and maybe Grigory has a point when he insists that Irina coddles Ilya too much, but, good heavens, that face, how could she not? It is not until Ilya notices the suitcase by the bedroom door that his expression changes. His eyes darken at first, and then his face screws up minutely, looking at Irina with thinly veiled horror. “Be completely silent, solnyshko,” Irina breathes. “We have to go.” Irina Rozanova chooses differently.

  15. Ilya's life is perfect. He's the captain of the best team in the league, he gets to play hockey with his husband every day, and he finally has the kind of family he only ever dreamed about as a boy.

And then one phone call from Russia changes everything. His brother and his sister-in-law are dead and Ilya has been named guardian of his 14 year old niece in his brother's will.

It's not even a question of whether or not to bring his niece to Canada. Ilya just doesn't expect that navigating life with a grieving, traumatized, and stubborn teenager would be end up being the hardest thing he's ever done.

  17. In another life — or maybe the next one, or maybe the one before — Ilya Rozanov learns that some roads only lead to one place. No matter how you take them, the wolves are always waiting at the end.

Maybe that's why, in December 2008, Ilya wakes up with the distinct, inexplicable sense, that he has already lived this life before.

Some things, it turns out, are inevitable. The question is whether he is.

  19. So what is the plan now, Mr. Spreadsheet?

“Honestly I was kind of hoping your consciousness would just click back into your body once I touched you.” Shane scratches the back of his head.

You treat me like slap bracelet, Ilya complains.

After a bad hit knocks Ilya’s consciousness out of his body — literally — Shane finds himself sheltering the soul of his decade-long situationship in the back of his head. Turns out it’s a lot harder to keep secrets when you share a body.

    (They definitely still try, though.)
