  1. Shane is hiding something that could end his career. Ilya is the kind of person who doesn’t stop until he finds it. What starts as rivalry turns into fixation. Because something about Shane doesn’t make sense, his control, his scent, the way he reacts. And Ilya doesn’t like unsolved patterns. He likes breaking them open. Even if it breaks Shane with it. Not instinct. Not luck. Not being an alpha. Control. So when he watches Shane play, he sees it immediately, something precise, something careful, something just out of reach. Something hidden. And Ilya has never been good at leaving things alone.

  2. In 2003, Shane Hollander is assigned a PenPal, and gains a friend. A friend who smokes, calls him boring, and gives him ridiculous nicknames.

Across the world, Ilya Rozanov practices his English with a curious Canadian boy whose name he can't fucking remember.

Or, before they were Canada's Shane Hollander and Russia's Ilya Rozanov, they were Cat and Elijah. Shane has no reason to suspect his childhood PenPal is his hockey rival, and Ilya has never even considered that the man he's falling for is also the boy he already fell in love with through letters and postcards.

  3. Shane and Ilya have done everything right, with years of waiting, planning, and hoping. After too many almosts and not-quites, they go to one more adoption event with no expectations. But one quiet conversation—and one perfect baby—turn “maybe” into something a lot more dangerous: hope. And hope, it turns out, has a way of asking for more than they expected. (AKA: hurt/comfort, so much yearning, accidental family, angst with a payoff, and yes—a hard-won happy ending)

  4. Now, for the first time in years, he found himself praying. Not caring who listened. Not caring if anyone listened.
    Take anything.
    Take the game.
    Take my career.
    Take whatever you want.

    Just let him wake up.
    Because Shane couldn't be gone.

Cliff Marlow isn't the one who sends Shane Hollander to the hospital.
    Ilya Rozanov is.
And when the worst thing Ilya can imagine happens, keeping their relationship a secret becomes impossible.

  5. “Eyes on me.” There is a sharp satisfaction as those eyes lift immediately to meet his again. “I need your name.” The man’s lashes flutter. “Shane, sir.” Ilya nods and lets his hand move through Shane’s hair. It is soft, and Shane leans into the touch, eyes closing briefly as if the contact alone is enough to ground him. The response is so natural that it gives Ilya pause. “Tell me about your limits.” Ilya doubts he is going to be close to any limits tonight, as Shane looks like he already had a pretty rough night. But he still needs to ask, good hygiene. A small smile appears on Shane’s face, he looks at Ilya deeply, eyes not wandering away as he speaks, “There are no limit, sir.” He looks at the disbelief appearing on Ilya’s face and offers, “I’m the house slave.” Or, Ilya didn’t come for attachment, but Shane, bruised, obedient, and unraveling, becomes the one thing he can’t leave broken.

  6. Ilya wasn’t trying to kill himself that night. Suicide is something that belongs to his mother- he’s just lazy, and he wishes Shane would stop making excuses for him.

Shane has everything under control. His body is a tool, the one that’s given him both his career and his relationship, and he wishes Ilya would stop prying into the way he maintains it.

or: Ilya learns a whole lot more about his mother, Shane remembers a whole lot more about his childhood, and they both get diagnosed.

  9. Shane has his cornerstones of control: Ilya, food, and hockey.

He can keep them all discrete and harmonious - a well-oiled machine.

Hockey belongs on the ice. Shane and Ilya belong at the cottage. Hayden belongs at a distance where Shane doesn't have to explain himself.

Except Hayden really should know about Ilya, shouldn't he? And surely telling him can't blow Shane's life up too much. Ilya doesn't think so, but Ilya routinely asserts that his skates are "too American and trying to humble him", so maybe Ilya's opinions aren't always to be entirely trusted.

OR: Hayden Pike loves Shane a lot. Enough to tolerate the Russian shitbag that is Ilya Rozanov? Well...

  10. Ilya. He is still sleeping fitfully in Irina’s bed, face crumpled and lips turned down. Irina leans over him and presses a single kiss to the crease between his eyebrows, and then leans back just enough to watch Ilya’s big, blue eyes blink open at her. She holds a finger against her lips, waiting until Ilya nods before she straightens up and beckons him to get out of bed. When Ilya is standing, Irina helps him into a clean sweater, his coat, scarf, and hat. Ilya looks terribly confused, but allows himself to be dressed like a toddler, watching his mother curiously but without question. He is twelve years old, certainly old enough to dress himself, and maybe Grigory has a point when he insists that Irina coddles Ilya too much, but, good heavens, that face, how could she not? It is not until Ilya notices the suitcase by the bedroom door that his expression changes. His eyes darken at first, and then his face screws up minutely, looking at Irina with thinly veiled horror. “Be completely silent, solnyshko,” Irina breathes. “We have to go.” Irina Rozanova chooses differently.

  14. (to The Many Plans of J.J. Boiziau)

So J.J. had figured out that Shane’s secret boyfriend was Ilya after less than twelve hours of even knowing that he had a secret boyfriend. And it had been… fine? His reaction hadn’t been at all what Shane had expected. He still couldn’t quite wrap his head around it.

But one problem at a time. He was sure that he was a bad boyfriend to Ilya, no matter what J.J. had said, and he needed to find a way to fix it.

Or, some moments from Shane’s POV that J.J. wasn’t present for.

  15. Shane Hollander has been eating the same way for eight years. He has a framework. It has a name, research behind it, years of evidence in his performance numbers. He made an appointment because he is a professional, and professionals address things when they become inefficiencies.
That is what he tells himself. He is very good at this, and ultimately Ilya is wrong. He does not have a problem.

  16. Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is. On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone. Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.

Uploaded to one of the biggest sports broadcasts in the entire industry, the Metro's are blindsided when texts between Shane and Rozanov are leaked one afternoon. They're even more surprised to find how many they have, how far back they span, and just how intimate they are.

    ---

“You know what I’m thinking about?” JJ asked with no specific person in mind.

“Please don’t say Ilya’s thighs,” Hayden pleaded, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“First of all, ew, no,” he replied instantly. “Second of all, don’t call him Ilya, it’s weird.”

“It’s his name!” Hayden retorted, defensively. “We should get used to using it considering he and Shane are…you know.”

Sleeping together sounded crass, but dating seemed too romantic, too. Not that there hadn’t been some pretty romantic texts to sort through. He couldn’t really figure out what the word that felt best was, or if there even was one.

  18. “Shane,” Rose says gently. “I don’t think Eva is good for you.” Shane sighs into his water glass. This again. You get one shoe thrown at you during an argument, and suddenly everyone thinks you’re being abused. Or: Shane ends up dating Rose’s co-star rather than her, and soon finds himself in an abusive relationship. Ilya and Shane's friends need to put aside their differences in order to keep him safe.

  19. Trainers praised his “elite conditioning.” Commentators talked about his jawline, his speed, the way he seemed carved rather than built. No one asked how he stayed that way. By twenty-two, Shane’s life ran on control. Ice time. Calories. Sleep. Reps. He tracked everything with the same ruthless precision he brought to his shot. When he was a kid in Saskatchewan, control had been a luxury. His parents’ divorce. The financial stress. The way people talked about him—too flashy, too arrogant, too much. Control was something he built himself. Brick by brick. Hockey rewarded it.
