  1. Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.

Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.

His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.

But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"

By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.

But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…

    Shane says yes.

And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.

  2. Shane Hollander is a former professional cyclist who now owns a bike shop in Colorado. Ilya Rozanov, the tattoo artist who owns the shop next door, thinks boy scout Shane Hollander should take a ride on his motorcycle instead. But what starts out as a casual fling can't stay that way for long--not once Shane and Ilya discover the depths of their chemistry (and Ilya the many benefits of little spandex shorts). Both of them have been hurt before, and the only way to move forward is to get over their pasts. It's a hill climb in both directions, but if Shane Hollander can do anything, it's push himself to endure the burn when he knows the ride home will be that much more satisfying.

  5. Six months after Boston went dark, Shane Hollander walks into the Raiders' arena with a handgun to do the one thing he won't let a patrol do for him. The thing walking the visiting-team corridor says his name.

What follows is eight days in two borrowed rooms and a school with a fence: a pulse where there wasn't one, a nurse who wants to know for how long, a friend who will walk you to the door and no farther, and a relationship the two of them never managed to be honest about when they both had a pulse.

  6. “This might have been a bad idea.”
    “You think so?”
“Hollander’s pissed.” Marlow said, stating the obvious.
“No he’s not.” Ilya answered easily. “He’s just nervous.”
    “About what?”

“About asking if he can watch you fuck me.”

    -OR-

Ilya and Marlow have been hooking up for years - though it was never personal (until it was too late).

  7. “Can I?” Shane asked quietly, staring at his lips.

Rozanov would punch him. Shane would bend time and never come down to the gym in the first place. Simple.

Except no. Rozanov put the bottle down and pulled Shane into his lap.

    What?..

    ...

Shane can travel back in time whenever he regrets something. This is particularly inconvenient for a man prone to regretting awkward conversations.

Somehow, time travel becomes therapy and these two idiots learn to talk.

  9. “—okay, that’s unusual,” the first commentator’s voice is saying over the footage. “Hm. Ladies and gentlemen, it seems that, thanks to some last-minute additions to the broadcast, we’ll be able to get an audio feed straight from the arena today!”

Ilya frowns. Who the fuck was stupid enough to get mic’d for this fucking game? Some idiot rookie from Toronto, probably. They really don’t teach kids how to handle anything these days.

“That’s right!” The second announcer pipes up with an annoyingly fake cheery voice. Ilya immediately wants to send a puck straight into his windpipe. “We just got confirmation that Captain Shane Hollander himself will be wearing a microphone during tonight’s game.”

Ilya sits up and spins to face the TV screen fast enough to give a lesser man whiplash.

Shane doesn’t get injured when Ilya comes back from Russia in 2017, so Ilya follows through on his plan to end things between them. A year later, despite being miserable, he still believes he did the right thing for both of them.
Except the Voyageurs have been acting weird around Hollander lately. And wait, what do you mean he’s mic’d for this game?

  13. “Shane has boyfriend?"

“Mom thinks so. He’s dodging my texts, but it definitely seems like he’s seeing someone.”

Ilya's whispered "No" was drowned out by a loud snort from another teammate, who said something like, "Good for lil' bro."

Ilya shouldn’t feel like dying. Should have expected this to happen at some point. Deserved it, even. He had been ghosting Shane for months, after all.

In which Ilya knows he's not good enough to be with his best friend's little brother. He spirals over Shane possibly dating someone else nonetheless.

Alternatively, Ilya will always be the one Shane will still run to.

  14. Ilya knew, right from the very moment he met Shane Hollander, that he would never be good enough for him. He’d seemed so…pristine, when they first met. Untouched. And Ilya knew his unclean hands would only dirty him up. He’s always been selfish, though; his father used to tell him that. So it’s no surprise, really, that Shane has finally gotten tired of it. Of him, always needing more from Shane than he deserves - always begging for more than he has earned. Ilya would leave himself, too, if he could. 15. The Boston Bears group chat had sixty-three new messages in the span of three minutes.

His coffee forgotten, Ilya swiped open the chat, scrolling quickly to find the source of the commotion. A link to The Athletic, posted by Jensen, their captain, followed by a string of exclamation points. Ilya tapped it, the headline materializing on his screen like a blow to the chest:

BREAKING: MONTREAL VOYAGEURS’ SECOND DRAFT SHANE HOLLANDER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Ilya's pulse jumped, hard and sudden in his throat. The mug slipped from his hand, not falling but landing too heavily on the counter, coffee slopping over the rim. He set it down properly, his movements mechanical, and forced himself to read the rest of the headline:

20-YEAR-OLD ROOKIE OF THE YEAR STEPPING AWAY TO PURSUE HARVARD BUSINESS DEGREE

    Or

Shane Hollander has spent his entire life living and breathing hockey. At twenty, at the height of his career, he makes an unthinkable choice: he walks away to discover who he is beyond the ice.

But some things don’t stay behind.

What happens when the rivalry between him and Rozanov ends, but the pull doesn’t?

  18. "I wanted you to be there in the bar and tell this guy to fuck off. I wanted you to put your arm around me, to kiss my cheek or my hair or my jaw, or… I don't know, grab my ass like a freak. I wanted to say I was taken. I know we can't do any of that, in public, really. Of course I know that."

Shane tipped his head back. "But I want… I want you to want to claim me. Maybe it's weird for me to want this? I know it's nice to say that you don't own someone, because we're people, not objects. But I've always—"

Cutting himself off, he took a shaky breath. Why was this so hard to say?

"Is not weird to want," Ilya said quietly.

Or, Shane wants to be owned.

  19. Ilya’s still learning what Shane likes and needs, observing him quietly because Shane’s not so forthcoming with what he wants unless he’s certain it’s what he’s supposed to want. But it’s not until Shane reaches back and grabs Ilya’s hip to pull him closer, pressing their bodies together and taking some of Ilya’s weight, that he realises Shane’s been studying Ilya the same way.

“I’m trying to take care of you.”
“Why?” Ilya says, instead of something safer.
Shane twists over his shoulder to frown at him. “Because I want to? Because you’re tired and sad and not feeling well?”
“Oh.” Ilya pulls his bottom lip through his teeth. “But I…”
“I think maybe we both fucked up tonight?” Shane says tentatively.
“No, is not your fault.” Ilya rubs a hand over Shane’s shoulder and then kisses it, wet and soft. “You’re good.”
Shane hums like he’s not convinced. He turns and drapes his arms over Ilya’s shoulders, still pressed close. “After this, will you…”
“Yes,” Ilya says, his mind sharpening attentively, “Tell me what you need.”

  20. In Vegas, after they’d said everything right up to the edge of I love you, Shane and Ilya came up with a plan. It was long term, with many, many steps. There might be a spreadsheet somewhere that Shane won’t admit to.

But it’s a plan, nonetheless. Over the summer of 2014, they tweak it and add things important to the both of them. There are even many, extensive, contingency plans.

    OR

Thanks to Shane's small lie the first time they hooked up, Shane and Ilya are together years earlier. Now, they have to figure out what to do about it.
