  1. Ilya wakes up in the early afternoon, in his underwear, with a dry mouth, a crick in his neck, and loud, incessant banging. It takes him longer than he is proud to admit to realize that it’s coming from his front door. He gets up and immediately regrets it. His living room is a mess and the light coming in from the window makes him wince. He does not want to clean today. What he had wanted was a rare, quiet night. Maybe text Hollander to rile him up after his loss the day before. Instead, Marly insisted on coming home with him after his girlfriend dumped him, so he could drown his sorrows. He remembers making some questionable choices after that, and if the state of the house is any indication, he is right.

Oh, that fucker. What did he forget here?

“Marly, you fucking asshole, I swear if you don’t stop—” Fuck. His head. How much did he drink last night? “Couldn’t you wait until practice tomorrow to get—” He opens the door. A small child is looking up at him.

Or: The day before the Tuna Melt Ilya Rozanov finds a child at his door.

"Maybe," Irina said, "I will ask. Maybe, Shane and Ilyushenka would like to go on ice together? Hockey maybe, or only skating?"

"Shane would certainly prefer to play hockey," Yuna said, as Shane stepped into the room, his eyes going suddenly bright when she glanced at him as the word hockey left her mouth. Sometimes she thought it was like having a little puppy hearing the word walk.

"Hockey?" Shane asked, still standing in the doorway, his whole body vibrating a little, "I can have hockey?"

The Hollanders go on a trip to Russia in 1996 to attend a wedding, and Shane makes a friend. In 2008, he meets his friend again. Part of him knows it's his friend, sadly, that part is not his brain.

  3. There's another baby photo trend going around social media, and since the last one went over so well, Harris wants the team to try it. It's the one where they put a statement about an adult over a picture of them as a baby, like a cherubic little baby Ilya captioned "THIS IS WHO PUNCHED A REFEREE." But this time, the Centaurs staff are getting in on the action, and Harris shows his own version to the team as an example.

When Shane sees little tiny Harris, he's struck literally speechless. He's been hanging out with Harris since before he was officially a Centaur. How did he never recognize that the team's social media manager was his favorite teammate from junior skills clinics? How did he not realize, with the benefit of hindsight and also knowing his sexuality, that Harris was his biggest childhood crush?

(No angst, no cheating, no insecurity. It's all good times and fond memories here!)

The woman had her hair tucked under a knit hat, and her eyes were actually kind.

    "You are cold," she said.

"I'm fine," Shane said. His teeth betrayed him with a chatter.

She unwound her scarf from her own neck and wrapped it around his.

Eight-year-old Shane goes to a hockey camp in Moscow, becomes a victim to language barrier, and gets rescued by a woman who gives him her scarf and tells him snow angels are real.

Eighteen years later, Ilya finds out his mother had already met the love of his life.

  6. 'Shane nodded, listening to his boyfriend. He’d realized before, that whenever the other would talk about Russia, his accent would thicken. It would also be like that when Ilya was excited about something. His accent would be much more present again; endearing, really. He also sometimes mixed Russian words into his sentences, something he only ever seemed to do around Shane, though. “What are bliny?” Shane asked then. “Блины,” the other corrected.' --- Shane and Ilya have a late night talk, where Ilya talks about his grandparents for the very first time. Shane decides to cook something for Ilya as he seemed happy remembering it that night. And Ilya is very obsessed with Davids homemade bread. Or, they cuddle, talk and eat.

  9. Sometimes, it feels like they’re two planets caught in the same volatile orbit. Shane spends his nights wondering why the girls in the rinkside seats feel like white noise while every single highlight reel of Ilya Rozanov feels like a secret rendezvous. Ilya spends his afternoons wondering if the heavy thrumming in his heart whenever Shane pins him against the boards is hate, or if it’s the only thing that makes him feel human. All Ilya knows is that he would have been there to tell him that a lost game wasn’t the end of the world, and he would have iced the bruises on Shane’s back. Their story is a road movie. It’s a double-feature. Two boys striking out across a field of wildflowers in Ottawa, while desire, like a monster, crawls up out of a lake nearby. All of us are wondering if these two boys will find a way to figure things out. One cuts a lock of his hair with a steak knife in the restroom of a gas station. He knows he’s desperate to subvert expectations. Expectations of being the golden boy, the very best, the pride of his family. The other smothers a cigarette on the ground with the toe of his scuffed-up boot. He presses down on it, hard, and it almost feels like a part of his bruised heart gets smashed into the tile too. One boy, half-destroyed, and the other, half-complete. Both screaming into the space between their faces as they run across a field, watching the sky around them transform from dark night into the coming of dawn. It’s not just the warmth of the glow of sunrise they’re feeling, no. There’s something more there that makes their hearts flutter, something that settles into the pits of their stomachs as Shane grabs onto Ilya’s hand. The world still looks the same to Ilya, but when he squints a little harder, he realizes it burns brighter. It’s shinier, and it’s sunnier. It’s better. OTTAWA, 2005 There is a kind of love between them that Ilya doesn’t quite know how to describe. A love that blazes in innocence, born on a Tuesday afternoon in a downtown community rink. Warm, damp grass grazes Ilya’s palms as he leans back on his hands outside the arena, letting himself bathe in the slow midday heat. It feels like soft kisses across his face. Something he never knew and felt in the biting winters of his childhood in Moscow. It’s nice. Shane braces himself with a wince as he feels the ice beneath his palms etch into his skin like a blade after a particularly hard fall. He feels the glaring floodlights burn holes into his back, right through his jersey. “How do you do it?” “Do what?” Two boys with their shoulders pressed against each other’s as they lean over the boards. Shane with his custom skates that are glossy with crisp red lines running across the middle. He’d leave behind clean lines in the ice as he weaved around the slower skaters. Ilya looks back down at his own skates. They’re rentals, and a jarring industrial blue. Not the shiny finish of Shane’s skates, no. It’s the kind of plastic that makes you scrunch your nose up in disgust. He runs his fingers across the dozens of scratches and scuff marks. He’d leave odd-shaped gashes in the ice after ramming himself into the boards in an effort to slow down. “I wish I could skate like you.” Ilya bumps the toe of his skates against the boards. “Well, if you come here every Tuesday, I can teach you,” Shane says, glancing behind his back. “Oh, really?” Ilya asks, his accent still clipped. “Yeah.” Ilya never returns to the rink. His family moves again, chasing work and a life that he’s never quite entirely sure belongs to him. He clutches a small, crumpled hockey trading card Shane had signed for him as a joke. All he can think about in the car is the distance growing between them as the engine revs, away from the only boy who didn’t care that Ilya was the “weird foreign kid” that nobody wanted to get close to. A sign overhead whizzes past, and Ilya can barely make out the words on it as he clambers to peer through the backseat windows.

  10. So he followed Ilya. He followed Ilya into the living room. And then, he waited. Waited for Ilya to collapse onto the couch and do nothing- to stare at nothing. Something that he had been doing more and more recently. Waited for Ilya to pull out his phone and facetime whoever he was fucking when Shane left Canada. Waited for Ilya to pull out a secret bottle of vodka and down nearly the whole thing. (Waited for Ilya to pull out a bottle of pills and accidentally take one too many.) But Ilya didn’t do any of those things. Instead, he moved towards the shelf filled with DVDs and movies from Ilya's childhood that were still trapped in VHS. It was nighttime, they were supposed to be sleeping. But they were both awake, Shane knew they were. But Ilya didn’t. Ilya probably thought he was the only one awake– something that Shane let him believe by keeping his eyes shut, his breathing even… And by resisting the urge to reach out, to part his lips and ask where his boyfriend was going tonight– what his boyfriend would do tonight. After vodka and sex, Ilya shouldn’t be doing anything other than sleeping. Normally, he would be dead to the world and Shane would once again feel like he was sleeping next to a corpse. A corpse that, every once in a while, let out a deep snore that sounded more and more like a snort of laughter every time he had the pleasure of hearing it. The mattress underneath them shifted thanks to Ilya’s sudden movement. Movement that he only made when he was certain that his bed companion was asleep. Shane wasn’t sure if he should be thankful or not that Ilya’s test for tonight to see if he was awake or not was just gently whispering his name into the darkness. Because he enjoyed the small kisses that ilya would press to the back of his neck or whatever part of him he could easily reach without risking the mattress moving too much and risking rousing Shane. Shane, who Ilya thought was sleeping when he didn’t even twitch after a few kisses that normally he would find irresistible. But tonight, there were no kisses. There was only a call of his name. Maybe that was a good thing though. After all, if Ilya began pressing kisses to his skin again, Shane doubted he would be able to ignore them. Not after what happened tonight– definitely not after what happened tonight. So, Ilya only called his name softly. And when he didn’t reply, he began moving. Moving out of the bed– away from Shane. And towards wherever he had been going at night. A place where Shane would discover– he was brave enough to discover after lacking the courage the previous nights. Suddenly, the bed stopped moving. Ilya had finally completed his mission and slipped out of it. But Shane would not follow suit. Not until he was certain the other man was no longer in the bedroom. He only had to wait a few seconds for that to happen– to Ilya to leave him all alone in the bed in the home they were building together. Shane’s eyes fluttered open, watching Ilya retreating back as he crept down the hallway. And then, when it was safe to do so, he followed his partner who didn’t really feel like the partner he had committed his loyalty and life to all those years ago. Because Ilya was being secretive again– just like he had been before they decided to be together. Really be together . Normally, Ilya would open up. Or, well, the new Ilya would open up… eventually. But it seemed like Ilya had reverted back to his past self that was riddled with secrets and avoidance. And well Shane… Shane was worried. About so many things– and all of them had to do with Ilya recently. So he had to know– know something that he knew would cause him to feel guilt about what he found out. Because, in a way, it felt like he was betraying Ilya– betraying his trust to spy on him and uncover a secret that years ago he wouldn’t even attempt to uncover. But that was years ago. And now things were different. So many things had changed– so many things had come to light. And Shane needed to know. He needed to lessen the ever growing knot of unease in his stomach. A furrow appeared in Shane's brow as he watched Ilya pick out an old VHS he had teasingly suggested upgrading to a DVD so many times before. And that furrow only deepened, just for a moment before it ruptured with silent understanding, when Ilya forced the television screen to come alive with that old movie. A movie that Shane knew wasn't supposed to be this. Because this… This wasn't a mainstream movie that made its way onto VHS and trapped inside that case. This was something else.

“Once upon a time,” Ilya couldn’t believe he was actually doing this, “an old man and his wife had no bread. They scraped the last flour from the corners of their house and made a round bun. And they called him Kolobok.” “Kolo—” “Ko-lo-bok,” Ilya repeated. “It sounds cute,” Shane said. “Can I call you that?” “Only after I retire and gain weight,” Ilya said.
