  1. In another life, Irina Rozanova dies. In this one, she takes twelve year old Ilya and runs.

They arrive in Calgary, Alberta, with two passports and no luggage. Years later, hockey still carries Ilya toward Shane Hollander, but this time, they don't meet as rivals and instead build something neither of them is ready for.

But Ilya has learned never to trust warmth in the middle of winter.

    The cold always comes back.

“English is… is not first language,” the woman said quietly. Her accent was thick, and unmistakably Russian.

“Oh, sorry! I’m speaking too fast, aren’t I? Sorry,” she took a breath, and held out her hand. “I’m Yuna,” she repeated. The woman took her hand quickly, her hands bony and delicate.

“Irina,” she replied, before gesturing for Yuna to sit with her. Quickly, Yuna did. “Sorry, I have not been in Canada long.”

“No problem at all; welcome to Canada! Is that your boy?” Yuna asked, gesturing over to the child that had similar hair to Irina, which was poking out from under his helmet. He was taller than Shane, though his little hockey outfit still seemed to still dwarf him. He had a serious look on his face, but his eyes were light as he watched the other boys play. He was tapping his stick on the ice, clearly itching to get into the game.

“Ah, yes,” Irina nodded, taking a few seconds to translate the question, “Ilyusha.” Irina looked over at her son, a small smile on her face. “Is my Ilya.”

Or: Ilya and Irina move to Canada for a fresh start when he is six years old. He meets Shane Hollander at ice hockey practice, and they grow up together (and of course, fall in love).

  5. Ilya. He is still sleeping fitfully in Irina’s bed, face crumpled and lips turned down. Irina leans over him and presses a single kiss to the crease between his eyebrows, and then leans back just enough to watch Ilya’s big, blue eyes blink open at her. She holds a finger against her lips, waiting until Ilya nods before she straightens up and beckons him to get out of bed. When Ilya is standing, Irina helps him into a clean sweater, his coat, scarf, and hat. Ilya looks terribly confused, but allows himself to be dressed like a toddler, watching his mother curiously but without question. He is twelve years old, certainly old enough to dress himself, and maybe Grigory has a point when he insists that Irina coddles Ilya too much, but, good heavens, that face, how could she not? It is not until Ilya notices the suitcase by the bedroom door that his expression changes. His eyes darken at first, and then his face screws up minutely, looking at Irina with thinly veiled horror. “Be completely silent, solnyshko,” Irina breathes. “We have to go.” Irina Rozanova chooses differently.

  7. "In the songs the old women sing, the forest does not offer mercy… it only offers trades. When Anzhelina was fourteen, she walked into the deepest thicket to find the Young Wolf, Ruslan Dragunov. She did not go with tears; she went with a crown of iron and a heart of flint. She offered him a life for a life: she would be the moon to his tide, the lioness to his pride, and the mother to his heirs, if only he would tear the throat from the Great Bear, Grigori. Ilya still wonders if the North Wind blew too hard that night, or if it was Lina’s own hand that guided the Wolf ’s teeth toward their brother Andrei, too. Perhaps he was a branch that always needed breaking. That was the night the girl died, and the Queen of the Fortress was born. She traded her spring so her brothers could finally see the summer."

  9. "Oh." Hollander has gone a little red, beneath his freckles. "I am from… French Canada? Québec? Do you know? Very… very small town there, no English, only French. I try to learn, but— is a bit hard."

Ilya feels mildly stupid. He knew, obviously, that they speak French in Canada, but he didn’t know it was, like— some people’s only language. He’d sort of assumed everyone was fluent in both.

    "Huh. Cool."

"Your English is very good," Hollander offers.

    Ilya laughs.

"I mean, yeah— I grew up in Minneapolis."

  13. “We had a visitor waiting when we got back to the house tonight.” Yuna finally spoke. “It was, of course, alarming to find a stranger in our driveway, a car we didn’t recognize, a person we didn’t recognize.” “Okay.” Ilya intently listened, nodding at everything. “She explained that she had found me through the foundation, and wanted to reach out to me before she did anything else.” Her hands reassuringly squeezed around Ilya’s ones, eyes never leaving his even for a second. With a deep breath in, she closed her eyes. “She told us her name is Irina. Irina Sergeevna Rozanova.” OR Irina Rozanova survives her suicide attempt but goes into hiding.
