Surely the media will be normal and let them enjoy their vacation, right?

    ---

Told through a series of group chats, Twitter threads, tabloid articles, and more

  2. “You dropped out of college!” Svetlana repeated as she threw her hands up. “You had two semesters left in Boston! You were top of your program! You talked about moving to New York, opening your own firm, taking over the world—and now your big life ambition is sitting on a plush couch in the Canadian tundra waiting for Mr. Real Estate to finish his stock trades?”

Ilya laid his fork down with a deliberate clink against the ceramic plate. He rested his elbows on the table, leaning forward, his blue eyes sharp and terrifyingly clear.

“Sveta,” he began, his tone dropping into that familiar, authority. “In Boston, I woke up at six every morning to run in the freezing rain. I spent eight hours in lectures surrounded by rich idiots who thought they were geniuses because their dads bought a building. I spent four hours every night memorizing financial models I already knew how to build in my sleep, just so some eighty-year-old professor could give me a checkmark on a piece of paper. The point is, why would I fight the world when I can just enjoy the simple pleasures of life? I spent my whole life surviving. Shanya gave me a place where I don’t have to.”

  3. "If this is it," Shane whispered, so quietly only Ilya could hear, "you won't face a single second of it alone."

Ilya closed his eyes. His fingers tightened around Shane's hand with everything he had left.

He saw the fear in Ilya’s eyes.

    Then he saw nothing.

    *******

It was supposed to be an ordinary flight. Instead, it becomes the worst day of their lives.

They were never meant to be on the same plane. Then the unthinkable happens. It goes down.

As terrified passengers flee the wreckage, Shane refuses to abandon the man he loves, even as rescuers and survivors alike order him to get out. Trapped beneath twisted metal, Ilya is running out of time. And while they wait for help, the secret they've spent years protecting slips into the hands of strangers with phones.

In an instant, the whole world is watching. Hockey can burn. The headlines can wait.

Shane Hollander has exactly one job: keep Ilya alive.

Because if they survive this, he'll have to protect more than Ilya's life. He'll have to protect everything they've built together against impossible odds.

  4. Ilya Rozanov has signed with the Ottawa Centaurs and the world is very confused.

Zane Boodram is probably the one person affected the most by this shocking turn of events and it couldn't come at a worse time. His mentors and fellow captains are gone, and he's been left to lead the worst team in the league by himself, which is bad enough, but now he has to deal with Ilya Rozanov joining the roster?
The Cents don't have a winning legacy to protect, but they do have a positive team culture built up over years by their previous captain. Bood is determined to make sure that all the work doesn't go to waste, so he's not letting the Russian Menace come in and change it.

Leaving Boston was supposed to be easy.
Ilya wasn't supposed to feel bad about. And he doesn't. Not really.
This is a good thing. A new team. The start of a new life with Shane.
But the Ottawa Centaurs are a mess and things would be a lot easier if Zane Boodram would stop being so weird about it all...

  5. The morning after the draft, Ilya stared at the headline for far too long. At Hollander’s beaming smile, at his young, innocent happiness, at the terrible hair and big brown eyes and the way he looked in the Bear jersey. Ilya’s colors. Ilya felt a rush of possessiveness that wasn’t at all appropriate. Hollander was so… edible. Ilya wanted to unhinge his jaw like a python and swallow him down.

He closed his eyes. That wasn’t appropriate. That wasn’t at all appropriate. Hollander was Ilya’s rookie and he was soon to be billeting him. There will be no eating. No nibbling, no gnawing, no gobbling, no swallowing.

He switched to his texts and tapped the number Keppler had sent him.

“Hello?” asked Hollander’s tentative voice. Oh, Ilya would not survive this.

“Hi,” Ilya said, brightly. “Shane Hollander?”

“Oh,” Hollander said. “Are you… Ilya Rozanov?”

What about just a tiny nibble? One little nibble on one of those cute cheeks?

  6. After spending an embarrassing amount of time researching baseball, I came to a realization: if Shane isn't playing hockey, then baseball is absolutely his next great love. It's a sport with one of the largest percentages of Asian players among the major North American leagues, and one that lets him push himself to the absolute limit as a rare two-way player. Honestly, what more could Shane ask for?

Yuri, from Tadaima, Okaeri, is back! This time, she's the daughter of Alpha!Ilya and Omega!Shane, who are now captains of the Boston Bears and the Boston Red Sox, respectively.

I really hope you'll enjoy Out of Left Field. ❤️

  7. Ilya is no ordinary Russian: he hates his family, is desperate to leave his country, is attracted to both men and women, and believes in soulmates.
When he meets Shane Hollander and his hypnotising freckles, he knows his life will never be the same again. Maybe, at last, he could finally be happy.

  8. “I was thinking summer,” Shane said. “Summer for what?” Shane lifted his head and met Ilya’s gaze. “For everything. Coming out. Going public. Getting married.” Ilya’s heart flipped. “Yes?” “Yeah. I know it’s going to be a shitshow, but I’m tired of being scared of being found out. I want to tell people, on our own terms. I think I can handle anything that happens, as long as going public is a choice we made ourselves. Together.” “That is what I want,” Ilya agreed. “We tell people ourselves. Together.” ~ The Long Game, Chapter 25 What if Shane and Ilya were never outed in Hayden's FanMail, and got to come out on their own terms?

  9. "You signed with the LA Kings?" she demanded. "What were you thinking? You know the plan. We'd go to the draft, get first pick, and go to Montreal."

"What are you even talking about?" Shane shot back. "If I got first pick, I'd go to Boston, not Montreal. And I don't even want to go to Montreal."

"Why?" Mom asked immediately. "They're one of the best teams in the league. One of the Original Six."

Something inside him snapped, and before he even realized it, he switched to Japanese.

"I don't know," he said, his voice tight. "Maybe because they're full of racists and homophobes. Do you even understand what I'm saying? Or have you become so white you forgot your own language?"

  10. Remember when Hayden Pike punches Ilya after Shane said not to, right before the announcement of the Irina Foundation? Remember that that was the second time Hayden laid his hands on Ilya in the first month of knowing him?

Or, Shane gets rightfully fed up after the first month of Hayden's behavior towards Ilya. Punching Ilya was the final straw, so he tells Hayden to pretend he never found out. It sets off a chain of events landing him, happily, in Ottawa a year earlier and with a better support system for both him and Ilya.

  11. There was something wrong with Shane Hollander.

He had known it since he was young.

Most people-most kids, in general-had different hobbies and interests. Their attention drifted from one thing to another. They became fascinated with something for a few weeks, only to abandon it for the next shiny obsession that caught their eye.

Shane had never been like that.

When it came to him, there was only ever one thing: hockey.

    Obsessive.

That was the word most people used when referring to his temperament.

  13. “Hi Milana,” he murmured, voice gentle. “I’m Ilya, your father’s brother. Did your mama tell you I was coming over?”

Milana nodded and pulled her bottom lip into her mouth, gaze contemplative as Ilya held out a hand to her. He didn’t touch her, didn’t broach the barrier of the doorframe, just held his palm out, a gesture of vulnerability, exposing soft skin. When he’d been a child, listening out for the sound of his father’s footfalls down the hall, trying to guess at what mood the man was in that day, if today was a day he would likely be hit, those gestures of vulnerability–upturned palms, tears on cheeks–had been the only thing he’d trusted. The wounded animal in his sternum reaching out for comfort, seeking safety in the fragility of others. Proof that he wasn’t the weakest one.

Or: After spending Christmas with the Hollanders Ilya realises he has unfinished business in Moscow; namely, saying goodbye to his mother's grave and recovering the pieces of his history. Before meeting Shane at the cottage for their second summer together - and before upending his life and moving to another country once again - Ilya decides to return to his home city and attempt to lay his past to rest.

  15. The Hollanders visit David's family for his mother's 100th birthday. It goes about as well as you'd expect. ~ And now was time for a sacred Hollander family (well, really Shane and Yuna) tradition: the debrief. “So, how was that for your first Hollander family function?” Yuna asked Ilya. He shrugged. “I can see why you do not visit often.”

  16. Farah, Shane, and his mom have a statement drafted by the end of the first period of the Boston v. Toronto game. By the time the Raiders are done showering and are pulled for post-game press, everyone with even a passing interest in professional hockey knows that Shane Hollander is an Unrestricted Free Agent looking for a new team.

Shane watched live as Ilya blinked stupidly, took a few seconds to process, and then quickly answered into the mic. This interview would gain millions of views over the coming months and would be cited as the source of the most chaotic social media rollercoaster the MLH ever had.

No one knew it then, but the Great MLH Seduction had officially begun.

    *****

Or: Ilya stays with the Boston Raiders instead of trading to Ottawa. This causes quite a few ripples when Shane finally ends his contract with Montreal.

Featuring: the Hollander Family's Spreadsheets(TM), professional hockey culture shifts, and a tasteful amount of fraud against the MLH.

  17. In the offseason, a steamy video of Shane and Ilya dancing at a club goes viral. Already out and married for years at this point, the first husbands of hockey can't believe this is news. For once, it's Shane whose media responses blow it up even further. Ilya’s not about to let an opportunity to compete with Shane go to waste.

    Or

The rivalry still hasn't died, they just find new ways to keep it going. Why choose silence when you can choose violence?

  19. "That's Shane Hollander," someone murmured next to him. "What's he doing here?" "He said Ilya," a neighbor called back. "Ilya Rozanov lives there." "Oh god," someone else said loudly, watching the flames continue to consume the house. Shane vaguely heard them talk, but the words in his head were all Ilya, Ilya, Ilya. "Ilya's in there!" Shane didn't even process that he was now screaming. He was too focused on getting to Ilya, on why the body he'd spent so many years working on wasn't strong enough to burst through the barricade. A window suddenly blew out, and Shane was staggering like he was in the room, his body slumping towards the ground before his mother's arms caught him.

  20. “Actually I need your help. . . over here.” Ilya adds coyly. Shane shakes his head before he even enters the room, seeing, unsurprisingly, Ilya leaned against the doorframe holding the garland in both hands directly under the mistletoe. “Is that so?” “Hmm, yes. Yuna said she wanted it on the mantle, and I don’t actually know where that goes.” he adds, sobering a touch with his actual question, but it doesn’t last long. “But I need you to come over here and help me. It is very important. For Christmas.” he adds and starts twirling the end of the garland with one hand. (ie. ilya is spending christmas with the hollanders for the first time and shane surprises him with misteltoe and ilya becomes a bit of a menace about it)
