“What the fuck are you doing?” Rozanov shouts, which is just insulting. He’s mourned three of his teammates and now she’s tackling him in his bedroom.
Obviously Jackie’s here to kill him, but he’s looking her dead in the eyes and still can’t see a murderer. Talk about a stereotype.
Or: Jackie Pike’s a serial killer making her way through Boston’s roster. Ilya Rozanov is harder to kill than she expected.

And then the new season starts and trades between teams happen.

“What makes you so confident you can handle him when Montreal couldn’t?” A reporter asks.
“Because he actually listens to me. Montreal didn’t have a damn clue how to handle guys like him. Me? Oh, I already got this kid under my thumb.”
Once celebrated as the NHL’s most promising young player, Shane Hollander’s rookie season collapses after brutally attacking a teammate during a nationally televised playoff game, leaving him suspended, publicly disgraced, and traded to the Boston Raiders.
Months later, Shane arrives in Boston determined to keep his head down and prove himself. But Ilya Rozanov has already taken an unsettling interest in him.

Cocaine was somehow everywhere in Shane’s life, at every party, in every pre-season lecture from coaches, in every post-season warning, every wild story the guys told to tempt the rookies into pleasure and scare them into line. And yet, Shane didn’t actually know much about it. He was too chicken, too prudish, maybe. He thought he was too good to ever need to know. Maybe Rozanov was right.
“Okay.” Ilya’s agreement startled Shane from his thoughts. “My Jane… she is good lay, mm? The best, maybe. And she doesn’t like coke, not even for fun. So, I will not do it. One year. To prove a point and keep her happy. I do not have addiction problem, so will be easy-peazy. And when I win, I will get whatever I want. Okay?”

In 2016, Shane walked out of Ilya's life and never looked back.
In 2017, Ilya poured gasoline all over his career, struck a match, and walked away from the ashes.
In 2026, their paths cross again at the scene of a car accident that kills Shane’s wife Rose and injures both Shane and his 4 year old daughter, Sophie.
Suddenly, the quiet, unassuming life that Ilya has worked so hard to build for himself crumbles as he confronts the fact that he's never gotten over Shane Hollander.

“Ilya, you need to fucking breathe,” Shane was trying to stay calm, but there was something about this situation - about the person at the forefront of this fucking situation - which made this feel different. Shane didn’t like to treat any casualty differently, but this? This really did feel more personal. “Come on. Just take a breath on your own. Just a little one. I can help you, but please, just one on your own.” Shane went back down, lips on Ilya’s, nose pinched shut, air filling his empty fucking lungs. Shane’s air becoming Ilya’s air. Shane’s air responsible for getting some blood to Ilya’s heart. OR, lifeguard shane saves rich boy ilya's life, and turns out, they don't hate each other like they both thought they did.

Shane couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t think. His brain repeating it over and over and over again.

The word echoed, hollow and impossible.
“I-it’s - fuck. M-My dad…” he choked out. “He- he’s-”

Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.
But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.
or: Ilya's father doesn't die during the 2016/2017 season. His brother does.

He knows it. “Lost contact?” Hayden asks, his tone a mix of concerned and confused. “What’s that mean? Like they lost their ability to communicate? Won’t that make landing hard?” J.J. frowns. “I do not think they will be landing,” he says solemnly. -- The Ottawa Centaurs plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness. Shane tries to get answers while Ilya tries to stay alive.
