  4. Set several months before the tuna melt:

The officer points at his entryway. “We noticed a doorbell camera when we entered. Is there a way we can take a look at that footage?”

Ilya frowns. The footage would easily prove that he spent the night at home, but it would also prove that he wasn’t alone. And if these cops know Ilya Rozanov, then they definitely know Shane Hollander.

“I’d like to know what this is about.”

“Shane Hollander was attacked outside of his hotel early this morning. The medical staff report he was saying your name."

  5. “Good, well then that brings me to the real topic of conversation.” Another sigh from Coach Wiebe, “As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, those highlighted names have been offered rookie contracts and they’ve each expressed interest in living with a vet for their first year.”

Ilya felt his heart fall into his stomach, afraid of the next words to come out of his Coach’s mouth.

“We asked the rookies who they’d like to live with and, well, LaPointe wanted to board with you, Chouinard. And Young with you, Bood,” Wiebe then turned to Ilya who had frozen on the spot, “And Roz, Haas wants to live with you.”

Bood and Chouinard chuckled as they watched Ilya’s eyes widen in horror.

Luca Haas was drafted 2nd overall by the Ottawa Centaurs in 2018. Two years later, he anxiously moved halfway across the world to play his rookie season with the team. He requested to live with Ilya Rozanov and they slowly became family.

  6. Lily: Sorry, I didn’t get to say goodbye

Shane had found the message sweet despite his disappointment. Now it just feels… ominous.

That’s usually the point when Shane has to get out of bed and pace around his bedroom and remind himself that, if Ilya is ghosting him (he is not, he’s not, he’s not), then he is also ghosting the rest of the fucking world. Because that is the thing that truly, really, terrifies him.

No one has heard of Ilya Rozanov in nearly three weeks.

Shane hasn’t been getting much sleep lately.

    Or:

After Tampa. Things between Shane and Ilya are finally starting to look stable… until Ilya drops off the face of the Earth with little warning. Shane spirals (a lot) and decides he’s going to find his man if it’s the last thing he does.

  7. Ilya. He is still sleeping fitfully in Irina’s bed, face crumpled and lips turned down. Irina leans over him and presses a single kiss to the crease between his eyebrows, and then leans back just enough to watch Ilya’s big, blue eyes blink open at her. She holds a finger against her lips, waiting until Ilya nods before she straightens up and beckons him to get out of bed. When Ilya is standing, Irina helps him into a clean sweater, his coat, scarf, and hat. Ilya looks terribly confused, but allows himself to be dressed like a toddler, watching his mother curiously but without question. He is twelve years old, certainly old enough to dress himself, and maybe Grigory has a point when he insists that Irina coddles Ilya too much, but, good heavens, that face, how could she not? It is not until Ilya notices the suitcase by the bedroom door that his expression changes. His eyes darken at first, and then his face screws up minutely, looking at Irina with thinly veiled horror. “Be completely silent, solnyshko,” Irina breathes. “We have to go.” Irina Rozanova chooses differently.

  9. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper called it an international emergency in his address to the Canadian public. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin claimed Russia was devoting every resource to it. The endless loops of crawling chyrons titled it Hockey Held Hostage. Eventually, Wikipedia settled on ‘The Sochi Affair’:

The Sochi Affair (Russian: Сочинское дело; French: affaire Sotchi) was a multinational hostage and extortion crisis that began on Thursday, February 20, 2014, when Olympic ice hockey players, Shane Hollander of Canada and Ilya Rozanov of Russia, were abducted from the Iceberg Skating Palace during the Sochi Winter Olympics and held hostage in southwestern Kazakhstan for 3 months, 19 days.

The world was captivated when Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander went missing, but no one will ever know what they found in the face of survival.

  12. “I’m Shane. Hollander. Vampire hunter,” The introduction would be madness anywhere else. But Shane had ducked out to catch his breath, exhausted from the constant stream of networking and chatter with other vampire hunters. He was a newly minted hunter and beamed with pride to tell anyone about it. He was certain this stranger wouldn’t be scandalised but when he held out his hand, they just stared at it.

“Ilya Rozanov,” he introduced himself, then flashed Shane a wicked smile, “vampire.”

Shane hunts feral vampires. Ilya is a vampire, but Shane's not interested in hunting him - no, he wants something far more dangerous. When the lines of their rivalry start to blur, they find themselves entangled in an age old conflict that will have far-reaching consequences.

“Yes. In recent games-” Ilya paused. Hollander didn’t interrupt him. “Have you read what they said about you?”
    “Who’s they?”
    “People. Hockey people.”
Hollander stared Ilya down. “Is this supposed to motivate me?”
    “No, um, I-”
“You should see the shit they say about *you*.”
Ilya most definitely did see it.

The NHL adds another team, resulting in an expansion draft. Shane and Ilya, both nearing the end of their careers at age 35, find themselves on the new team. Can they both prove that they’re not “too old” to lead a team to victory? And can they be honest with each other in the process?

  15. Shane doesn’t realize he’s braced for silent eyes until he feels the absence of it — the weight of teammates immediately finding him and going quiet, waiting for him to fuck up, to say the wrong thing, to exist wrong. He expects the chatter of a room to drop when he enters and its disconcerting to find it doesn't yet in Ottawa.

He stands at the entrance a beat too long.

    --

It’s the start of Shane Hollander’s first season in Ottawa and he should be settled. The Centaurs are friendly, the room is easy, and Ilya is finally close enough to touch. But, as Shane is intimately aware of, old habits learned the hard way will linger.

He saw the eyes first. Two glowing spheres of turquoise blinked an arm's length away. Something like a wolf stood before him—if wolves were the size of moose with thick pelts of sandy fur. The beast favored its hind legs more, resting the majority of its weight onto them. It was still as a statue, its attention fixed solely on him. In the winter of 1923, Shane Hollander is unknowingly courted by a werewolf.

“He’ll never forget anything about their first night. Or any night he shared with Ilya. Every detail has been etched into him. Without them, he wouldn’t recognize himself. Without them he was blank. Stop thinking about Rozanov. Fuck. He seeks new memories. New… etches. So when future archeologists dig up his bones they won’t read them like a love letter to Ilya Rozanov. Shane knows it’s risky. But he doesn’t know that tonight he won’t be etched, he’ll be broken.” When Shane hooks up with a stranger after a game, he thinks the worst that could happen is getting outed. He is wrong. What was meant to be a night to forget all about Ilya Rozanov, becomes a night when he needs him most.

  18. Tensions are high between the Montreal Metros and the Ottawa Centaurs during Shane's first season in Ottawa. After bringing a devastating loss against the Metros, the teams encounter each other in a bar in downtown Ottawa. The Metros are looking for a fight, and Shane is fucking tired of being good. "That was an exciting win against New York tonight." "Thank you," Drapeau, the starting goalie for the Montreal Metros said, sweat dripping off the stringy strands of dark hair that fell over his forehead. "We did exactly what we had to do, played some good hockey." "You got a shut out, congratulations." Drapeau laughed, his eyes very obviously sliding down the female reporter's body. He smirked. "Thank you, it wasn't hard." "So confident, that's what we like to hear," she said. "The Admirals did try hard, do you have any idea how many goals of Scott Hunter's you stopped tonight." Drapeau raised his eyebrows and all but rolled his eyes, he glanced up and around before answering. "I don't count, not a lot of his, I don't think, he didn't get many opportunities." She laughed, "You are all very confident in this season, even though it is so early. Does that confidence come from new leadership on the Metros line?" "Our captain? Yeah, Olsson is great. He really earned it, unlike...well." The reporter jumped on the opportunity to mention him, now that the door was cracked open slightly. "Your former captain is now playing for the Ottawa Centaurs. How do you feel about the Metros' chances against them this season?" Drapeau laughed, he sounded tired. His smile fell, then reformed, gleefully twisted. "I'm not worried. Hollander was slowing us down. Now we know why. The Centaurs have never been a winning team, everyone knows that. I think they will be too...distracted," he laughed at the word 'distracted', ensuring everyone knows exactly what he means, "to play well. At least for as long as Hollander and Rozanov are on the line." The reporter looked momentarily flabbergasted at how explicit Drapeau was being in his contempt. She stuttered, and he took the opportunity to thank her and duck out of there. Shane was riding an exercise bike to death. Not to his death, to its death. He stared at his legs in the mirror, a blur of movement and muscle. He was overdoing it on the bike, Luca Haas panting and sweating through his shirt on the bike beside him, trying to keep up, when Shane decided he wasn't going to play fair anymore. Everyone else in the league played dirty. Everyone was happy slinging mud. His former team was working to slander his name at every opportunity. Shane's been trying to rise above. On the internet, some people believed what the Metros said; hat he was weak and holding them back. They pulled up his stats for hitting and taking hits on the ice and called him a scared pansy. Pansy was the nicest slur people used. Shane went harder on the bike, until he couldn't watch himself in the mirror anymore, he had to squeeze his eyes shut and push. Some actually do believe he and Ilya cheated throughout their time in the league. The major news outlets weren't reporting that way, at least, not anymore. Not after a beautiful cease and desist from Farah's team. But they thought it, they all thought it. Shane did not say a single thing against his former team or his former teammates. He was polite when reporters asked searching, or abrasive, questions. He just sighed and locked his phone when he saw photographs of he and Ilya holding hands on the internet, taken by some random person they hadn't noticed. He was taking all the attention in goddamn stride. Until his breaking point. Drapeau's interview at the Metros second game of the season irked Shane. Irked was a nice way of saying, it drove Shane up the fucking wall. It did Ilya too, Ilya got angry, Shane did too. The difference was, Shane's anger was internal. Ilya swore and threw a water bottle. "Distracted? We see how distracted he is as goalie with an eye swollen shut." Shane loved his husband, and he wished he shared his ability to verbalize his emotions. Shane let Ilya kiss him senseless, putting it out of his mind for the time being, but that interview was the match struck. The tweet from Comeau was holding the match to the fuse. It was only about three days after the Drapeau interview. It went out in the middle of the night. Shane didn't see it until 7:30 that morning. He was in from his morning run, making a smoothie. Ilya was still in bed. They had a long night, but Shane could never sleep in. It was a curse, one he wished his husband shared. @GGComeau20: hollander wsa a fuckin fag + were all glad he went back to wehere he came from The rampant spelling errors likely meant that Comeau was drunk, which made sense for him. He was a notorious partier, his reputation was even more prolific than Ilya's. As his captain, he had been worried about him, but Comeau was never receptive to being handled, so there wasn't much Shane could do about it. Shane felt a familiar burn of anger and regret grow in him. It rose in him like heartburn, and lingered the same. He tried to breathe, and managed it. Comeau could call him a fag all he wanted, Shane heard it all the time. He's heard it all his life. Now, it's directed at him rather than around him, and

Shane Hollander, good guy turned bad.” He shot a sharp glare. “Shut the fuck up,” he muttered, kicking off his shoes and hanging up his jacket before heading toward Ilya. “No, never,” Ilya grinned mischievously. “This has been my wet dream for so long.” Shane looked up, raising an eyebrow. “Me fighting Hunter is your wet dream?
