  1. “It is nice to meet you, Shane Hollander.” Ilya nods his head at the crumpled paper in Shane’s hand. “What is that you have there?” “Oh.” Shane’s cheeks are a perpetual state of flushed red. “Before I came, I made a list of, um, things I am looking for in a car? Practical things, I guess. I didn’t want to forget.” Ilya’s lips quiver, and he resists the urge to let an incredibly fond smile overtake his face. This tall, muscular omega could not be more precious if he was made of teddy bears and heart stickers. “May I see it?” Ilya inquires, extending his hand again. With visible reluctance, Shane passes over the piece of notebook paper. Ilya glances up at Shane, arching an eyebrow. The omega smiles shyly at him, his warm brown eyes glimmering. “Am I completely out of my mind to try and find all of these things in one car?” he asks. “I never let a customer leave unhappy.” He winks at Shane, who lets out a small, startled laugh. It’s an utterly breathtaking sound, even as brief as it is. -ilya is a single, playboy alpha car salesman. shane is a pregnant, unmated omega, trying to start his life over. they meet, and starting over gets a bit more complicated-

  4. [Seven members of the Ottawa Centaurs stand in the backyard of Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. Each of the men holds a bag of candy as they joke with each other while Harris Drover sets up the shot. The sun is beginning to dip in the sky behind them, and the Stanley Cup sits on a makeshift stand made out of a cushioned lawn chair. Shane hovers close to the cup, and can be seen eyeing it with concern as Ilya watches him with amusement.]

Shane: That doesn’t look very stable. We could have at least dragged the patio table out here.

    Ilya: It’s fine, sweetheart.

Shane: I know, but it’s my day with the cup, I don’t want anything to happen to it.

Ilya: Bood seasoned jerk chicken in there, yesterday. I think it will survive a little trauma candy salad dump in our backyard.

Shane: That feels like a famous last words kind of scenario.

Nobody moves for a moment as Shane stares the woman down, and he’s seconds away from sawing the damn thing off himself, when the woman nods to the men surrounding the hybrid. And then there’s a flurry of movement, a clicking sound and then the men stand back to reveal Ilya in his bare faced glory, unobstructed by the muzzle.

Shane takes him in, inhaling softly at the sharp cheekbones, the moles dusted over his face, the pillowy lips that are set in a firm, displeased line. Shane wonders how big his fangs are. If he was a fighter, they must have been sharpened regularly.

Shane doesn’t want to think about the damage this wall of a hybrid had inflicted on others, the damage he could inflict on Shane. The hybrid stares at him, expression hard to determine but the intensity of it has Shane holding back a shiver. He’s staring at Shane like he can see every thought inside of him, calculating. As if they were on opposing sides of a ring, ready for the bell to chime and for Ilya to go in for the kill.

Shane gets roped into fostering a troublesome hybrid with a bad track record. Except what begins as a cordial arrangement turns into something much more complicated.

  6. After Shane’s kidnapping, Ilya vows he’ll never let anybody touch Shane again. The voice in his mind that sounds like his mother—her face lost to time, now even her voice fading away—urges him to leave the family business and embrace Shane as an honest man. The voice that sounds like his father’s tells him to lock up his heart and throw away the key. That way, nobody can hurt him again. (Or: after Shane is kidnapped and almost killed, Ilya chooses a different path. He’s as much his father’s son as he is his mother’s, after all.)

  7. Ilya had never really let himself picture it before. Not for too long, anyway. Himself at twelve, standing in that doorway, seeing her lifeless body on the bed. He didn’t have any photographs of himself from that age, which made it easier to keep the memory at a distance. Just a fact. Something that happened to a version of himself he barely remembered being. Niko turning twelve closed that distance. Ilya is going through a depressive episode. Which is hitting differently now that his son is the same age he was when his mom died.

  8. Before he had met the guy, he assumed Price was a bear in human form, recruited straight out of some secret dockside brawling fight ring in Nova Scotia. He was here to play hockey. Not to make friends. Except for Ryan, his unexpected friend. Though, it turned out he hadn’t been that wrong about the bear part. Or: Ryan and Shane hit the Village in Toronto. Companion piece to There have been threats and If you're afraid of wolves. January 2015.

  9. Shane was on the mend. Really. Ilya had pulled him out of that icy river before there was any lasting damage. It didn't matter that he couldn't just fucking forget what had happened. Ilya wasn't okay, but he wasn't going to tell anyone that. Telling people would mean dealing with it. And he had Shane now, which was enough. Or: Shane and Ilya deal with the fall out of being kidnapped and traumatized by the Montreal mafia.

  10. "I've been thinking," Ilya murmurs, breath hot against Shane's mouth. "We never tested how many times you can come in an hour. You said two. Now I think you could do four."

Shane's head spins as all his blood rushes south. "This seems like an awfully complicated distraction," he says.

He feels Ilya grin against his lips. "So? It's working."

Shane wants to talk about Ilya's move to Ottawa. Ilya doesn't want to talk much at all.

  11. There had been so many moments growing up when Ilya was certain Alexei wanted him dead. Or at least hurt him badly enough that the message would stick. Sometimes it wasn't even from their physical fights. Sometimes it was just from the way Alexei looked at him. With that particular expression of pure disdain. Like Ilya's very existence was an offense Alexei had to endure. Maybe that's how Max and Niko were starting to see each other now. Maybe this was how it started. Or, Shane and Ilya's sons get into a physical fight, and it drags up memories Ilya thought he’d left behind.

  12. “What are we doing?” Shane asks and Ilya holds out the other pair of skates he’d grabbed.

“Put these on,” Ilya says, and Shane takes them from him with a skepitcal look.

“Will these even fit me? And again, what are we doing? Are we even supposed to be here? I don’t think–”

“Shane,” Ilya interrupts, taking Shane’s face into his hands and squeezing just enough to make Shane’s lips pucker out. “You are going crazy at home. You love to skate. You love hockey. So let’s go skate. And play hockey. Just you and me, okay?”

    Oh.

There’s so many things he wants to say. Like how much he loves Ilya. Or how glad he is that they’d taken the plunge off that scary, crazy cliff when they were teenagers. Or how even in the midst of the craziness and anxiety and unknown, Shane is so fucking excited for the life they’re going to have.

But it all gets caught in his throat as emotion takes hold, and all he can do is nod and say, “Okay.”

    ____

Or, five times Ilya helps Shane when he's overwhelmed and one time Shane returns the favor.
