There’s still a big part of him that wants all the same things he used to. The hockey, those other interests, the simplicity of the smaller circle. But there’s a twinge of something else now beside it when he considers it for too long, a bruise he can’t place the origins of. He’d been able to put somewhat of a name to it, after Rose.

He only wishes he hadn’t filled in the rest of the blanks staring down at a grainy photograph of Svetlana Vetrova in a convenience store parking lot in Boston, a bag hanging off of her manicured finger just transparent enough to make out the logo of a First Response as she’d ducked into a sleek, black sports car, driving away with Shane's best worst would-have-been and, presumably, Ilya Rozanov's baby.

Shane feels no particular way about this turn of events. He really, honestly, mostly is somewhat close to believing that, too. It's progress.

“There is one more thing. Given the nature of your fall and the force of impact, we ran a full battery of blood tests to check for any internal issues. Everything looks normal, except for one result that… stood out.” Shane’s stomach tightened. Stood out? “Given your secondary gender presentation and hormone levels, we also ran a standard pregnancy panel,” she said, her words measured and clear. “And the test came back positive." For a moment, the words didn’t land. They floated in the air like dust in the sunlight. Positive. Pregnancy panel. Then, all at once, they crashed into him. or Shane Hollander discovers he is pregnant while at the hospital after getting hit in the ice by Marleau in a Boston vs. Montreal Match and after inviting Ilya Rozanov to his cottage.

The summer before his second season with the Centaurs, Shane Hollander is supposed to have his body and his life under control. He’s married, training hard, doing everything right.

So the nausea, the bone-deep exhaustion, the aching chest and low back, the way his body feels wrong in all the old ways he thought he’d outrun?

He blames stress. He blames the season. He blames anything but himself.

Shane knows his body. He has spent years fighting for it.

But one rushed doctor’s visit turns into an ultrasound, and suddenly he’s thirty-plus weeks pregnant with a baby he didn’t plan, didn’t want, and doesn’t know how to make peace with.

Now he can’t outrun anything anymore.
Not the dysphoria. Not the fear of the league finding out.
Not the family he’s already carrying.

Shane watched her eyes drift up in thought before looking back down, settling onto his face. With careful consideration she asked her next question. “Mr. Hollander, is there a chance you could be pregnant?” Shane sputtered at that very notion. No! Absolutely not! He couldn't be! Obviously! He denied that very idea. Or Shane has a cryptic pregnancy and goes into labor right before a game against Boston.
