I spent four hours every night memorizing financial models I already knew how to build in my sleep, just so some eighty-year-old professor could give me a checkmark on a piece of paper. The point is, why would I fight the world when I can just enjoy the simple pleasures of life? I spent my whole life surviving. Shanya gave me a place where I don’t have to.”

Ilya’s obviously aware that there’s something up with Shane, okay? No one who spent their formative years (as well as their twenties and thirties) obsessively watching Shane Hollander Best Goal YouTube clips could glimpse what was going on with the Metros last season and think that nothing had changed. He asked and asked over the summer months, and Shane denied and denied and denied to the point where Ilya had to wonder if Shane knew there was something up with himself. But that was silly. Of course Shane knew.
Ilya likes to think he’s the Shane Hollander whisperer. He knows about Shane’s dormant exhibitionism kink and how to trigger it without triggering what neither of them like to call an anxiety attack. He knows the difference between Shane's hungry stomach grumbles and impending-stomach-ache stomach grumbles. There’s probably not a freckle on Shane’s body Ilya hasn’t licked before, if he’s being honest. That’s not really impressive or a key to revealing Shane’s psyche or anything, but it’s probably worth mentioning.

He probably should, though, but that's something to think about another day. He'll just stick with Roz's Jane for now—makes it easier for everyone, probably. Jane's been haunting Boston for for-fucking-ever, which, shit—he's definitely curious about how long their whole thing has been going on.
He glances over his shoulder, catching sight of Breezy's tense mouth, their nerves apparent as Los knocks his shoulder into Ovi's; all three are muttering together, clearly anxious for tonight to go well.
Still, how they're standing itches at him. There’s something… off about the rookies.

“English is… is not first language,” the woman said quietly. Her accent was thick, and unmistakably Russian.
“Oh, sorry! I’m speaking too fast, aren’t I? Sorry,” she took a breath, and held out her hand. “I’m Yuna,” she repeated. The woman took her hand quickly, her hands bony and delicate.
“Irina,” she replied, before gesturing for Yuna to sit with her. Quickly, Yuna did. “Sorry, I have not been in Canada long.”
“No problem at all; welcome to Canada! Is that your boy?” Yuna asked, gesturing over to the child that had similar hair to Irina, which was poking out from under his helmet. He was taller than Shane, though his little hockey outfit still seemed to still dwarf him. He had a serious look on his face, but his eyes were light as he watched the other boys play. He was tapping his stick on the ice, clearly itching to get into the game.
“Ah, yes,” Irina nodded, taking a few seconds to translate the question, “Ilyusha.” Irina looked over at her son, a small smile on her face. “Is my Ilya.”
Or: Ilya and Irina move to Canada for a fresh start when he is six years old. He meets Shane Hollander at ice hockey practice, and they grow up together (and of course, fall in love).

He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.
In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.
