  1. It was new, knowing he was cohabitating with his mother. They couldn't speak, not truly, and he couldn't feel her touch barring occasional cold spots, but there was a weight in the air just knowing she was there. Growing pains, Ilya thought softly.

    or

Shane and Ilya struggle to be together while juggling his dead ghost mother's unfinished business, the mental illness Ilya swears he doesn't have, homophobia Shane promises he's not a victim of, and Russia which seems unwilling to let them go.

  2. Ilya wasn’t trying to kill himself that night. Suicide is something that belongs to his mother- he’s just lazy, and he wishes Shane would stop making excuses for him.

Shane has everything under control. His body is a tool, the one that’s given him both his career and his relationship, and he wishes Ilya would stop prying into the way he maintains it.

or: Ilya learns a whole lot more about his mother, Shane remembers a whole lot more about his childhood, and they both get diagnosed.

They're having breakfast when he tells them. He only remembers because he'd dreamed weird again last night. This time it was an older boy, who was trying to stop a little golden-haired baby from crying.

“What,” says Mom, in that flat voice she gets when she's trying not to sound surprised.

“...what?” says Dad, who clearly hadn't been listening. That's fine, Shane forgets to listen too, sometimes.

“I keep dreaming people I don't know,” Shane repeats patiently. He can be patient.

Shane Hollander habitually ends up in other people's dreams, which is fine. It's a family trait, on both sides, to slip into the dreams of the people you love. What's less fine is how Shane keeps dreaming strangers.

Or: like if a soulmates au took several detours.

  5. In Ancient Troy, a princess of the city and priestess of Apollo was struck with a terrible curse. The prophecies she Spoke would always be accurate, but none would ever believe her but the one deemed Listener.

Cassandra, Princess of Troy, is not the only person to fall victim to this curse. Hundreds of descendants share her burden. Irina Rozanova is one such descendant. And due to the nature of the curse, none can ever know but her ruthless, ambitious Listener of a husband.

Until her son speaks a truth so damning and so powerful, it makes her doubt. And maybe, just maybe, makes her brave.

  6. According to widespread folklore, a red cardinal is a spiritual messenger or a sign that a deceased loved one is near.

Snow has been falling since late afternoon the day before and has only just stopped, from what Ilya can tell anyway. The whole house is quiet beneath the blanket of snow. It feels so empty and he would feel lonely if he wasn't so fucking happy to be away from Andrei and The Colonel.

    And he's not alone, anyway.

Because there is a red something just outside.

    ___

Ilya keeps seeing cardinals when needs them most.

  7. Shane is in the front pew. His face is—Ilya does not have words for what Shane's face is doing. He has seen Shane angry and afraid and exhausted and soft and undone. He has never seen this. This is something below all of those things, something that lives at the very bottom of a person, that surfaces only when the thing above it has given way.

This is what it looks like when Shane has nothing left to manage.

    Ilya reaches for him.

    His hand passes through air.

Or: Ilya Rozanov turns the same age his mother was when she died. Featuring strange dreams, tarot readings, and a woman with her back to him who keeps appearing where she shouldn’t.

A man who spent twenty years preparing to die, and one husband who refuses to let him.

  8. The summer before his second season with the Centaurs, Shane Hollander is supposed to have his body and his life under control. He’s married, training hard, doing everything right.

So the nausea, the bone-deep exhaustion, the aching chest and low back, the way his body feels wrong in all the old ways he thought he’d outrun?

He blames stress. He blames the season. He blames anything but himself.

Shane knows his body. He has spent years fighting for it.

But one rushed doctor’s visit turns into an ultrasound, and suddenly he’s thirty-plus weeks pregnant with a baby he didn’t plan, didn’t want, and doesn’t know how to make peace with.

Now he can’t outrun anything anymore.
Not the dysphoria. Not the fear of the league finding out.
Not the family he’s already carrying.

  10. Irina was always a perceptive woman.

Maybe this perceptive, brilliant woman noticed how Ilya looked at boys.

Maybe that was the final straw, maybe she couldn’t handle the grief of having a son who loved boys. Maybe that’s why Ilya stumbled on his mother’s body a few days after realising he looked at boys like he could love them too.

or, ilya, religion, queerness and trying to do guesswork about someone who is long gone.

  11. Ilya and Shane settle whose name goes first with a one-on-one scrimmage. Shane wins. Ilya finds, to his own surprise, that he doesn't mind at all — and that turns out to be the easier question. The harder one is the middle name he's carried his whole life: Grigoryevich. Son of Grigori. He doesn't want to be Grigori's son anymore. He wants to be his mother's.

  12. “Look,” Shane began, hitting the edge of the basin with the flat of his palm. “I don’t know if I did something to piss you off, or…or what, but you’re being fucking weird. The phonecall? And this? What is this?”

Before he’d even really processed Shane’s words, Ilya was standing directly in front of him, grabbing his lapels, pulling him closer. Then his shoulders sagged and their foreheads met. Ilya could feel Shane shift, moving away, but Ilya kept him still. It felt so good just to have Shane near again. “You would not believe me,” Ilya murmured.

Shane let his shoulders slump in acquiescence. He gave a little shrug. “I’m already having a tough time believing that you’re acting like this.” He laughed weakly, and Ilya envisioned what it would be like to tilt his head just slightly and press his lips to Shane’s. Would he reciprocate? Pull away? The latter. The latter. Obviously.

Or, after Ilya takes the girl from the club in Montreal back to his hotel room, he falls asleep wishing that he and Shane had never been anything at all, and wakes up to a world in which that’s true.

  13. This was what tended to scare Shane the most, when Ilya was unwell: the gradual loss of him, despite being physically there. He would go quiet, blank, slow to speak and slow to respond, nothing like the pulse of intense energy and liveliness that sparked in him at his baseline. Shane missed him, when he was away in that place. It was not a place Ilya could always describe, and it was not somewhere Shane could rescue him from, or even join him in for company. So Shane waited, every time, for him to come back. He always came back. That was the only relief in it.

  15. Aleksei is seven when his father remarries. He is nine when Yulia is born.

If things had been a little different, he would have hated her. He was prone to envy at that stage: restless, anxious, without purpose. Jealousy would have eaten him through and left room for something uglier to move in. It doesn’t, because Yulia loves him first.

Aleksei is nine and furious at the world, and he doesn’t stand a chance. His heart cracks, breaks and swallows her whole.

  16. “I used to be so mad that she was gone sometimes, but it’s okay. I forgive her. I would forgive her every time.”

Something in Yuna’s eyes fractures, like a bird bone under the sole of a shoe. “Your mother is very lucky, then.”

“Yuna,” Ilya says, and he tries very hard to not look at Shane, to not see the unforgiving, enduring hurt in his eyes when he looks over at his mother, so far away from her that he can’t come home, even though he desperately wants to. He looks at Yuna instead, and somehow, even as he braces against the ice-cold concrete and lets the sound of the whistling wind settle in his ears and has been looking at her for a long time now, he finds himself entirely unprepared for familiar Yuna’s eyes will be when she turns her gaze from the distant streetlamp to him. “You’re very lucky too.”

Shane Hollander is a ghost with a comatose body that won't work, unable to move on because his mom won't come visit him. Ilya Rozanov is the only person who can see and hear him, and against all odds, this is still a love story.

  17. “We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”

Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.

“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”

Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.
