  1. Shane Hollander desperately needs to disappear.
After a spectacularly awful week, a remote Yorkshire cottage seems like the perfect place to hide from the press, rediscover himself, and drink an irresponsible amount of tea.
    Unfortunately, the cottage isn't empty.
The Russian stranger insists it’s his, but Shane has paperwork that says otherwise.
It's just after midnight, there's a storm outside, the roads are probably flooded, and the only available weapon is a stuffed fish.
Clearly, this is all Svetlana's fault.
They're both convinced the cottage belongs to them and they're both refusing to leave.
    A Yorkshire romcom.
Inspired by The Holiday (2006), with lashings of Wallace & Gromit.

  2. Retired hockey player Shane has been lying to his mom about having a boyfriend, but now he’s agreed to take said boyfriend to the family reunion.

Ilya Rozanov is Shane’s friendly neighbour. Maybe he can help!

“Okay, so this is my plan: I re-download Tinder and make a profile that has one photo of me, with the caption ‘I need a fake boyfriend for my family reunion. I will pay you $30,000 and cover travel.’ That’ll work, right?”

Or: The smutty fake dating fic with no miscommunication! They said it couldn’t be done, but I have done it.

  4. From across the rink, Shane watches Ilya get punched in the face. He keeps a distance from the mess playing out. He knows better than to go over and make it worse. He would be more worried about it if Ilya wasn’t laughing with blood running down his face as one of his teammates drags him away. He’s yelling at the player that punched him, and Shane is grateful he can’t hear what he’s saying because he knows it’s obscene. “Your boy is feral tonight,” Pike says to Shane. Shane groans. “He's not my boy.” When Shane is in junior high, Ilya's family moves to Canada. Instead of meeting as adults, they grow up together. Shane learns Russian and Ilya spends a majority of his time at the Hollander household. When they start their professional hockey careers, they have to learn how to be opponents instead of teammates, but also how to be apart for the first time in their lives. When Ilya suggests that they sleep together, Shane has to balance their friendship and their casual relationship.

  5. How did he let this happen?

    Shane's not sure.

One moment, he was on the gym floor not staring at Rozanov's gorgeous sweaty body. Then Shane was standing up, but his legs were weak for some god forsaken reason and Rozanov was there, just an arm around his waist to keep him upright, and now...

    Well.

Now Shane's on his knees on the floor of Ilya Rozanov's shower.

  6. “Rozanov needs a place to stay. His visa won’t allow him to go home to Russia over the break, and we don’t have the cash to put him in a hotel.”

Did the Harvard dorms completely shut down over the winter break? What about the dining hall? Shane supposed he didn’t really know. He’d never stuck around to find out, when he was younger.

    “Okay?”

Coach raised his eyebrows. “So, he’s staying with you.”

    Shane’s eyes went wide.

    “What?”

“Come on, Captain,” Wiebe looked down his nose at Shane. “Try not to look too thrilled.”

  7. Shane tries to remember, peering into the darkness surrounding the car with a furrowed brow. It hurts to move, and he feels something warm and slick sliding down his cheek.

More blood, his mind supplies rather unhelpfully.

He was driving after dark, but he shouldn’t have been. He wasn’t supposed to be. They had all night together, so why is he here?

    I already chose you, Hollander.

Shane inhales sharply as his mind slowly fills in the gaps in his memory. They fought. Ilya told him to leave. Shane did.

    And then he crashed.

  8. “So… you and Rozanov, huh? That's a thing now?” Shane freezes, “What?” You're starting to sound like him. They never really talked about that, just moved on like nothing happened. After Scott kissed his boyfriend on the ice, Shane knew it wasn't meant to be anything homophobic, but he'd always still felt hesitant about it. While Scott might know about being a gay NHL player, even he wouldn't understand this. Besides, the media might have focused on Shane and Ilya being rivals, but there had always been much more hostility between Ilya and Scott. Scott gives him a strange look, “You're friends now, right? Or is that all PR?” “Oh.” He tries his best to remain calm and relaxed, even if his heart is beating loudly in his chest, “Yes. I mean, we've been friends for… a long time. Just… the media blew the whole rivalry out of proportion and it was… easier.” Scott nods slowly, sipping his drink, “How, though? I mean, no offense, but he's… well, an asshole.” (Or, Shane runs into Scott, who finds out their secret)

  9. When he does wake up the lights are off and Ilya’s chest is against his back and Shane knows without even having to look at his phone that he probably should’ve left hours ago. He checks anyway, just in case it’s somehow only around midnight. 2.47am. Great. “Ugh.” He screws his eyes shut for a beat and drops his phone back on the nightstand. The sound of it makes Ilya jump behind him and he spares a moment to feel guilty for waking him up. “Why didn’t you wake me, asshole?” It comes out more like a whine than an actual accusation and Ilya mutters something behind him before rolling onto his back. Shane misses his warmth immediately. “What can I say, Hollander? I wore you out. Thought I should let you rest, huh.” * Every time Shane and Ilya accidentally spent the night together.

  10. "Nothing is running. It is a fucking blizzard," Ilya tried to sound calm, but he was still kind of freaking out. "What time is your flight back?" Hollander asked, still facing the window. It was hard to read his tone without seeing his face, although far be it for Ilya to complain about the view. "Probably not until afternoon, if planes take off at all tomorrow," Ilya admitted. "What hotel are you staying at?" "The Hyatt over by the rink," "Yeah, you'll never make it back there tonight," Hollander muttered. They didn't stay. It just wasn't something they ever did. As soon as they were done, one of them was out the door and back to wherever they were supposed to be in the first place. But surely Hollander wasn't about to send him out into a literal blizzard with no way to get back to his hotel. Ilya put his phone on the nightstand and stood up, tentatively approaching where Hollander remained frozen staring out into the snowy abyss that had once been the city of Montreal. "Is it okay that I stay here?" "Well yeah, you're gonna have to, man, there's no way you're getting back tonight," Hollander replied like Ilya was being slow.

  11. Ilya hasn't seen Shane in a few weeks, since he ran out of Ilya's house after he called him by his name. It sucks, but Ilya's mostly handling it. He's mostly handling it until they end up at some stupid MHL banquet thing and he sees Shane smiling with some girl at the bar. Shane's embarrassed, was overwhelmed by Ilya calling him his name because they didn't do that. And he didn't handle it great, and maybe dating a girl right after wasn't the move, but Shane was stressed. He and Rose broke up, because she realized he was gay and Shane felt sort of like an ass even though she said they could still be friends. And he was dealing with it, sort of, mostly he was just trying to avoid it. Until his coach told him he had to be at a banquet and he saw Ilya across the room, then he was drinking a nasty tasting red wine and trying not to look his way. OR Shane and Ilya haven't talked since Shane ran out of Ilya's apartment, neither of them is planning on talking either, until Shane gets roofied at some official MHL banquet and Ilya takes care of him.
