  1. Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.

Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.

His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.

But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"

By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.

But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…

    Shane says yes.

And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.

  2. "If this is it," Shane whispered, so quietly only Ilya could hear, "you won't face a single second of it alone."

Ilya closed his eyes. His fingers tightened around Shane's hand with everything he had left.

He saw the fear in Ilya’s eyes.

    Then he saw nothing.

    *******

It was supposed to be an ordinary flight. Instead, it becomes the worst day of their lives.

They were never meant to be on the same plane. Then the unthinkable happens. It goes down.

As terrified passengers flee the wreckage, Shane refuses to abandon the man he loves, even as rescuers and survivors alike order him to get out. Trapped beneath twisted metal, Ilya is running out of time. And while they wait for help, the secret they've spent years protecting slips into the hands of strangers with phones.

In an instant, the whole world is watching. Hockey can burn. The headlines can wait.

Shane Hollander has exactly one job: keep Ilya alive.

Because if they survive this, he'll have to protect more than Ilya's life. He'll have to protect everything they've built together against impossible odds.

  3. On the eve of his thirty-fifth birthday, Shane Hollander falls asleep beside his husband and thinks about everything his own fear had cost them.

He wakes up ten years earlier. Twenty-five. No wedding ring. No Anya at the foot of the bed. No Ilya beside him.

He still remembers it all: the years of hiding, the loneliness Ilya carried alone in Ottawa, the breakdown that nearly took him, the pain that could have been prevented if Shane had just chosen him sooner.

He also remembers their happy ending.

This time, Shane wants to change the cost. He wants to love Ilya openly, before it breaks him. He wants to be the person Ilya needed when he was most vulnerable.

Or: Mysterious Time-Travel AU/Fix-it feat. bad-ass Shane Hollander. Plans to take down a homophobic hockey-league included.

  4. The week before the 2017 All-Star Game, Ilya Rozanov is placed on IR. Ten days later, he disappears from the league entirely. Boston says nothing, and for once, a notoriously fickle league closes ranks.

Every attempt Shane makes to find him hits a wall. In one last desperate, life-altering bid to reach him, Shane comes out to the world, only to be met with Ilya’s silence.

By the time the 2020/21 season begins, Shane has nothing left but hockey and regret. He builds a dynasty, guts his life, and pins the last scraps of his hope on the Metros’ newest transfer, the dangerously hot-headed Cliff Marlow.

Stepping back into the public eye after the worst three years of his life, all Ilya wants is to find some kind of purpose. Shane is done with him, he made that much clear. Ilya isn't about to try to convince himself otherwise. He just wants to prove he still has some use left in him.

Fortunately for both of them, they're still fucking stupid for each other.

  5. The first sound Ilya hears is a thin, discordant symphony of beeps and whirs. Something vibrating.

The next thing he hears is…wet. A sort of shaking, gargling sound, that feels like the ugliest crying he’s ever heard. And through it, Shane’s voice.

“I’m with him now, mom. He’s— he’s not fine. He’s not. I know—”

Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask.

“Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—"

Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little.

Footage of the last game between Ottawa and Montreal is everywhere; it’s breached containment from the sports world, and now it seems like everyone is baying for Montreal’s blood. Except, Ilya is oblivious. Not exactly blissfully so, but as the fight for accountability within the league rages on without him, Ilya just wants someone, anyone, to tell him what happened.

  7. Raised as the Yakuza's Wakagashira, Shane Hollander only knows discipline. The Bratva Pakhan's son, Ilya Rozanov, has only ever been feared. When their worlds converge, what begins as a rivalry becomes something far more dangerous: a secret, forbidden relationship forged in violence, restraint, and yearning neither of them should be allowed. In the criminal underworld, love is leverage, and survival means knowing when to hide the truth and when to pull the trigger. A mafia AU about their forbidden romance, rivalry, violence, and what it means to choose each other in spite of it all. Enemies by design. 8. “We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”

Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.

“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”

Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.

    --

AU where the last words you ever hear from your soulmate are tattooed on your chest. Ilya and Shane still argue over the party, Ilya still already chose Shane, and everything goes so much worse after Shane leaves.

  10. Shane and Ilya broke up. It was the adult, mature decision they made together and moved on from. Except Shane is still Ilya's emergency contact and Ilya's coach just called.

Ilya had a seizure. Well, seizures. Multiple. He is in the hospital, in the operation block and suddenly Shane is met with the possibility that last words Ilya Rozanov ever heard from him were "Maybe love isn't enough."

And then complications occur. And Ilya is not waking up.

    ***

They’d sat on a perfectly ordinary Wednesday afternoon in their perfectly ordinary kitchen, with coffee that had gone cold on the table between them, and calmly dismantled the life they’d built together. One sentence at a time.

“Maybe we need space.” “Maybe we’re just hurting each other.” “Maybe love isn’t enough.”

He wants to go back and shove that version of himself against the wall. Shake him until his teeth rattle.

Love is the only thing that matters when someone is under general anaesthesia and a stranger is touching their brain, Shane thinks wildly. Love is literally the only currency worth anything in a room like this.
