the devil in his veins longing for tenderness by Anonymous

Ilya wakes up in the early afternoon, in his underwear, with a dry mouth, a crick in his neck, and loud, incessant banging. It takes him longer than he is proud to admit to realize that it’s coming from his front door. He gets up and immediately regrets it. His living room is a mess and the light coming in from the window makes him wince. He does not want to clean today. What he had wanted was a rare, quiet night. Maybe text Hollander to rile him up after his loss the day before. Instead, Marly insisted on coming home with him after his girlfriend dumped him, so he could drown his sorrows. He remembers making some questionable choices after that, and if the state of the house is any indication, he is right.
Oh, that fucker. What did he forget here?
“Marly, you fucking asshole, I swear if you don’t stop—” Fuck. His head. How much did he drink last night? “Couldn’t you wait until practice tomorrow to get—” He opens the door. A small child is looking up at him.
Or: The day before the Tuna Melt Ilya Rozanov finds a child at his door.

"Ah, you are going to prison," Ilya says as the door swings open. "I always knew they would get you. It's probably the time you tried to scam our neighbours with very overpriced lemonade and brownies."
Katya rolls her eyes at him as she pushes inside.
"Not everyone can get a million dollar hockey contract at 18."
"We should have bought her an apartment," Ilya says, turning to Shane.
"The website said they encourage people to live on campus for at least their first year. It's easier to make friends!"
Or, Katya Hollander-Rozanov is moving into her dorm at McGill. No one is handling it particularly well, but they're trying.

This has some unintended consequences that Shane could not have imagined.

The ice was not quite regulation size because he refused to take out the birch trees.
But it was, Shane Hollander thought, perfect.
This is not the story of how Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov fell in love - that story already happened - in hotel rooms and stolen moments between games, in secrets leaked and for hard fought for happiness. This is what comes after.
Their relationship. Their marriage. The Cups. The years.
The daughters who arrived and changed everything.
Two little girls on a rink in Lanaudière, Quebec who were supposed to grow up and play together in the PWHL - until it became clear to their fathers as they circled each other on the ice with such a competitive heat, that rivalry was very much in their blood.

Being a good father and a good husband turned out not to require anything extraordinary. All Ilya had to do was hold his son upright while he cried. Reach for his husband’s hand when everything else felt fragile enough to break. Explaining why. Explaining it again. Apologizing when he was wrong and letting himself be forgiven, too. Stay—especially on the days when staying felt like a decision he had already, once, been afraid he might not make. Do it again tomorrow. And tomorrow, Ilya learned, was no longer frightening when it looked back at him through brown eyes.

“No, malyshka. Not sad.” Ilya turns and kisses her palm. “I am happy.”
Ilya stills after the words leave his mouth, skin prickling with warmth. He means it, he realizes.
He’s spent so much of the last decade convincing himself that he was not sad. But being happy, being happy like this—effortlessly, accidentally, on purpose—is different. Ilya can’t remember the last time he’d thought it and meant it. I am happy.
“Ilya?” Shane asks softly.
“I’m okay. I—” Ilya sniffs, wipes at his cheeks. It’s all useless when he looks down at Emi again, when he sees himself staring back. His lip trembles. “My mama would have loved her.”

"What happened?"
Ilya swallowed hard, his mouth dry as paper.
"Alexei and Zarina..." He started, and the words felt strange, distant, as if they belonged to someone else's life. "...got into a car accident."
He felt Shane's hands lightly squeeze his waist, his husband's body tensing behind him. He turned around to face him and saw the shock in the brown eyes, the slow, terrible realization of what that could mean.
"Zarina died on the spot," Ilya continued, his voice monotonous, numb. "Alexei was severely injured. He's in a coma."
"And?" Shane asked, but Ilya knew he was already connecting the dots. He knew the family history, he knew Polina, he knew enough to see where this was going. "What about your nieces?"
"That's exactly why Sasha called me." Ilya ran his tongue over his chapped lips. "Polina, my dad's widow, would never take on that responsibility. She's always hated the girls, always treated them like a burden. And I..." His voice cracked for a second. "I'm the closest relative. The only one left."

“Olesya.”
“Oh-lee-syah,” Shane repeated slowly, making sure he pronounced it right. “What… what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know,” Ilya said, resting his head in his hand. “I don’t fucking know.”
Shane’s voice was steady. “What can I do?”
How long had it been since someone offered to help Ilya? He took care of his family, carried his brother’s financial burdens, tended his own injuries, paid his way through life without aid. The question, softly spoken and rich with genuine intent, was enough to bring tears to his eyes. Could he really trust it? Could he ask someone for help?
For once, he wanted to try.OR: Ilya is left with sudden custody of Alexei's daughter and calls Shane to help.

And she’s pressing Tupperware dishes into his hands, full of turkey and potatoes and all the strange side dishes, and he suddenly aches with how much he misses home. He misses the foods he knows, and the holiday he’s used to, and in a strange way, he even misses Papa and Alexei.
"Spasibo," he blurts, before catching it. "Sorry. That is thank you in Russian. My brain is tired. Um… is hard, with language."
She just laughs.
"Well, spasibo for coming tonight, sweetheart," she says, pronouncing it all wrong. She turns to yell over her shoulder. "Brad! Your rookie is heading out! Come say goodnight!"
