  1. Ilya. He is still sleeping fitfully in Irina’s bed, face crumpled and lips turned down. Irina leans over him and presses a single kiss to the crease between his eyebrows, and then leans back just enough to watch Ilya’s big, blue eyes blink open at her. She holds a finger against her lips, waiting until Ilya nods before she straightens up and beckons him to get out of bed. When Ilya is standing, Irina helps him into a clean sweater, his coat, scarf, and hat. Ilya looks terribly confused, but allows himself to be dressed like a toddler, watching his mother curiously but without question. He is twelve years old, certainly old enough to dress himself, and maybe Grigory has a point when he insists that Irina coddles Ilya too much, but, good heavens, that face, how could she not? It is not until Ilya notices the suitcase by the bedroom door that his expression changes. His eyes darken at first, and then his face screws up minutely, looking at Irina with thinly veiled horror. “Be completely silent, solnyshko,” Irina breathes. “We have to go.” Irina Rozanova chooses differently.

  2. What if the Tuna Meltdown ended differently?

    What if Ilya's fear won?
What if Ilya was the one who panicked and walked away? Before Shane could even call him his. A single step backward became a thousand miles between them.
Shane was left standing and waiting for 3,650 sunrises, 120 months of silence.

    For 10 years of waiting.

  6. “Oh my god, oh my god. Seriously, this is the best. I can’t believe you’re my neighbour. I’m calling it now, Hollander. This right here is the beginning of a friendship that will go down in history.” Ilya is 10 years old when his family moves from Jacksonville, Florida to small town Ontario. There, he forms an unexpected friendship with Shane, the boy living on the ginseng farm across the street. As they grow up and grow apart, their paths continue to cross at high school hockey games, in tabloid articles, and at one particular intimate Muskoka cottage. OR: A childhood friends to strangers to lovers AU in which Shane Hollander (up and coming indie rock star) and Ilya Rozanov (brooding artist) take nearly fifteen years to figure their shit out.

  7. In 2000, Russia had 31,000 cases of HIV. In 2010, there were 530,000.

By fourteen, Ilya Rozanov is sleeping around Moscow. It's a complicated outlet, but he's good at two things: hockey and sex. At 16, he's diagnosed with HIV.

Or: the progression of Ilya and Shane's relationship as rivals to teammates to friends to lovers if they had been drafted to the same team, and the story of how Ottawa makes the rest of the league pay for letting them end up with the best two hockey talents in a generation

  9. Shane is in the front pew. His face is—Ilya does not have words for what Shane's face is doing. He has seen Shane angry and afraid and exhausted and soft and undone. He has never seen this. This is something below all of those things, something that lives at the very bottom of a person, that surfaces only when the thing above it has given way.

This is what it looks like when Shane has nothing left to manage.

    Ilya reaches for him.

    His hand passes through air.

Or: Ilya Rozanov turns the same age his mother was when she died. Featuring strange dreams, tarot readings, and a woman with her back to him who keeps appearing where she shouldn’t.

  10. After years of spending summers detesting each other, Prince Shane Hollander and Tsarevich Ilya Rozanov were ready to never see each other again.

But as the two laid eyes on each other on the year of their 18th birthdays, something changed, and hatred turning into something far more precious and fragile.

But it would not be long lived, as other forces at work plotted to tear them apart.

  11. During introductory interviews, Ilya always got the same types of questions: when did he start playing ice hockey? Did he learn to skate as soon as he learned to walk? Did he spend his entire childhood on the ice to be as good as he was at ice hockey? He always laughed them off, making the same kind of jokes about being able to skate before he could walk and skipping school to be on the rink instead. Don’t be like me, kids, he told the interviewers and the cameras. Don’t skip school.

The truth is that Ilya’s first love wasn’t actually skating.

  12. From across the rink, Shane watches Ilya get punched in the face. He keeps a distance from the mess playing out. He knows better than to go over and make it worse. He would be more worried about it if Ilya wasn’t laughing with blood running down his face as one of his teammates drags him away. He’s yelling at the player that punched him, and Shane is grateful he can’t hear what he’s saying because he knows it’s obscene. “Your boy is feral tonight,” Pike says to Shane. Shane groans. “He's not my boy.” When Shane is in junior high, Ilya's family moves to Canada. Instead of meeting as adults, they grow up together. Shane learns Russian and Ilya spends a majority of his time at the Hollander household. When they start their professional hockey careers, they have to learn how to be opponents instead of teammates, but also how to be apart for the first time in their lives. When Ilya suggests that they sleep together, Shane has to balance their friendship and their casual relationship.

  13. Shane was still angry. Rozanov’s plan had been to, what? Seduce him so they’d bond? He hadn’t even though to ask Shane first! Shane should get up and walk away and let his dad take him back to Russia and lock him away. Then Shane wouldn’t have to bond with him. Shane didn’t want to bond.

But Shane had told Rozanov they’d be a team, just the two of them, and Rozanov seemed so scared and vulnerable. But Shane had started thinking about what they could do, the two of them on the ice, bonded. He’d had wingers he’d connected to before, who seemed to be able to read his mind. How much more incredible would this be, someone who’d always know where he was, what his intentions were?

“No one can know,” Shane said.

  14. How did he let this happen?

    Shane's not sure.

One moment, he was on the gym floor not staring at Rozanov's gorgeous sweaty body. Then Shane was standing up, but his legs were weak for some god forsaken reason and Rozanov was there, just an arm around his waist to keep him upright, and now...

    Well.

Now Shane's on his knees on the floor of Ilya Rozanov's shower.

  15. Svetlana knows about Jane. It's frankly insulting for Ilyusha to think otherwise.

She just never expected to have to call him for help. During the Olympics. In Russia. In the dead of night.

    -
Or, it's Sochi 2014 and Russia has lost to Latvia. Grigori Rozanov, not yet compromised by illness, punishes his son for shaming the family. When Svetlana finds an injured and emotionally fragile Ilya, she knows she needs somewhere safe for him to recover. And there's only one person in Russia who Sveta trusts with her Ilyusha: Canada's Golden Boy, Shane Hollander.

  16. Sometimes, Ilya Rozanov is just a weird guy. Obviously, the Bears aren’t going to say that to his face, not when he’ll chirp them into oblivion for it, but sometimes it just gets out of hand.

Like the late night phone calls where he’s talking aggressively in Russian. The random knowledge he has offhand about how far you can throw a human being and have them come out okay. The Russian death metal he forces them to listen to, calling it family bonding. The scars he refuses to talk about.

Cliff Marleau thinks he might be in the Russian mob. The Bratva, or whatever they call it.

Ilya doesn't tell his team about his family until they've already invented a thousand conspiracies about it. Like him being in the mob. Or having rabies.

In which Ilya Rozanov and Yuri Plisetsky are brothers, and the world changes with the most minute of connections.

  19. "In the songs the old women sing, the forest does not offer mercy… it only offers trades. When Anzhelina was fourteen, she walked into the deepest thicket to find the Young Wolf, Ruslan Dragunov. She did not go with tears; she went with a crown of iron and a heart of flint. She offered him a life for a life: she would be the moon to his tide, the lioness to his pride, and the mother to his heirs, if only he would tear the throat from the Great Bear, Grigori. Ilya still wonders if the North Wind blew too hard that night, or if it was Lina’s own hand that guided the Wolf ’s teeth toward their brother Andrei, too. Perhaps he was a branch that always needed breaking. That was the night the girl died, and the Queen of the Fortress was born. She traded her spring so her brothers could finally see the summer."
