“What’s it to you?” Pike snaps as he uncaps the two beers and slides one a few inches in Ilya’s direction.
“I did just take a fifteen-minute cab to fuck you,” Ilya speaks slowly in case that’s what Pike needs to understand. “At your request. After admitting online that you think you might be–”
Or: Ilya, heartbroken and bored in a Montreal hotel room, comes across a post on Reddit. Responding to it is one of the dumbest, most exciting things he’s done in a long time.

From across the rink, Shane watches Ilya get punched in the face. He keeps a distance from the mess playing out. He knows better than to go over and make it worse. He would be more worried about it if Ilya wasn’t laughing with blood running down his face as one of his teammates drags him away. He’s yelling at the player that punched him, and Shane is grateful he can’t hear what he’s saying because he knows it’s obscene. “Your boy is feral tonight,” Pike says to Shane. Shane groans. “He's not my boy.” When Shane is in junior high, Ilya's family moves to Canada. Instead of meeting as adults, they grow up together. Shane learns Russian and Ilya spends a majority of his time at the Hollander household. When they start their professional hockey careers, they have to learn how to be opponents instead of teammates, but also how to be apart for the first time in their lives. When Ilya suggests that they sleep together, Shane has to balance their friendship and their casual relationship.

“It was nice of Rozanov to come check on you."
Shane understands that Rozanov must be a person, though when he scans through his memories—the ones of being sixteenish and the ones he’s made in this hospital room—he can’t conjure up any details.
“Who?” He asks, staring up at her.
“Oh, I should’ve realized. He’s the captain of the other team. You two are pretty serious rivals,” she chuckles. “He just came by to see how you were, and apologize I suppose.”
“Apol’gize? Did he hit me?”
“No, no. But, captain to captain, you know….”
After the nice, pretty nurse leaves, Shane is alone for a moment. He finds himself looking at the doorway, imagining a shadow there, a Rozanov. He has a professional rival? Maybe he’s like that Russian kid everyone says is going to give Shane a run for his money.
“Rozzzzanov,” Shane says to himself, his hand coming up to rub his chest. Distantly, there’s a beeping that’s getting faster.

It’s a picture of Ilya she has pulled up from Google. He’s in a hockey uniform but his helmet is off, curly hair glistening with sweat. “This is who you talked to, right?” Shane nods. He hopes that it isn't obvious on his face that he did much more than talking with the man.
