Shane tries not to be disappointed in the way the whole thing has worked out. Because the thing about Rozanov is that his existence is infuriating. And he is so much fun to play against. Shane had almost liked the thought of having a rival and, had the lottery gone a little differently, he and Rozanov would have been drafted to the same division and really delivered on that possibility. They could have really enjoyed it.
As it stands, one of them is going to the southernmost team in the league, and the other is going all the way up North.
Or-
The draft lottery goes a little differently and suddenly there is no rivalry, no joint CCM campaign, and nothing between Shane and Ilya but a charged encounter in a hotel gym and 4,000 kilometres of distance.
A lot of things are different, and some others are too fated to be ruined by something as immaterial as luck.

“You are Scott Hunter’s boy, yes?” Hockey Guy asked, and fuck, he was Russian. Not that Kip had anything against Russians, of course, but the chances were that any given Russian in the NHL was not going to be all that friendly to gay people. The only Russian NHL player Kip was at all familiar with was that Rozanov guy from Boston, and based on the “fighter, womanizer, party boy” stories he’d heard about the guy, he was really hoping that he was not the man standing next to him.
“Yeah. That’s me.” Kip confirmed, standing straighter and flashing a tight smile.
Hockey Guy grinned and offered his hand. “Ilya Rozanov. Nice to meet you.”
God fucking damn it.

Hollander is a magician on the ice, the best prospect in the world except for Ilya himself. But up close, Hollander looks young. Soft. Western. He has big eyes and freckles across his nose like a little kid. He is attractive in the way that many young men are attractive, his face not yet hardened by the work of the real world, and he seems nervous to be out here, nervous to be seen with Ilya. Because Ilya has been forced to learn everything about Hollander, Ilya knows that Hollander is older than him, not much, a few weeks. But looking at him, Ilya feels weary and old. He hates that.
