"Grief is… is kind of like sadness," he says tentatively. "But it is different."

They look up at him, and he suddenly hates himself for no particular reason, and he hates his father, and he hates his brother, and he hates his mother, and he hates his mother's God.

  2. A chapter-by-chapter companion to Season 1 of Heated Rivalry, covering every Russian-language scene in the show. What was said, what it means, what the subtitles got right, and what they quietly dropped.

  3. From across the rink, Shane watches Ilya get punched in the face. He keeps a distance from the mess playing out. He knows better than to go over and make it worse. He would be more worried about it if Ilya wasn’t laughing with blood running down his face as one of his teammates drags him away. He’s yelling at the player that punched him, and Shane is grateful he can’t hear what he’s saying because he knows it’s obscene. “Your boy is feral tonight,” Pike says to Shane. Shane groans. “He's not my boy.” When Shane is in junior high, Ilya's family moves to Canada. Instead of meeting as adults, they grow up together. Shane learns Russian and Ilya spends a majority of his time at the Hollander household. When they start their professional hockey careers, they have to learn how to be opponents instead of teammates, but also how to be apart for the first time in their lives. When Ilya suggests that they sleep together, Shane has to balance their friendship and their casual relationship.

  4. Moscow, 2007.

Ilya wasn’t expecting that along with a new assistant coach, he’d also be getting a new teammate for the summer. Shane Hollander turns out to be only one in the rink who can keep up with him. The tension between them builds fast, and it doesn’t just spill over the boards. It follows them home.

  5. Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.

But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.

or: Ilya's father doesn't die during the 2016/2017 season. His brother does.
