Ilya's been taking care of himself for so long, and not always doing a very good job of it. It would be understandable, Ilya thinks, if Shane didn’t really know how to do it yet. Not when they’re only a month into being married and three months into being honest and less than a year since that hotel room in Tampa, where Shane had climbed into his lap and let Ilya cry into his shoulder and held him like no one had held Ilya since he was very small.

Sometimes, Ilya Rozanov is just a weird guy. Obviously, the Bears aren’t going to say that to his face, not when he’ll chirp them into oblivion for it, but sometimes it just gets out of hand.
Like the late night phone calls where he’s talking aggressively in Russian. The random knowledge he has offhand about how far you can throw a human being and have them come out okay. The Russian death metal he forces them to listen to, calling it family bonding. The scars he refuses to talk about.
Cliff Marleau thinks he might be in the Russian mob. The Bratva, or whatever they call it.
Ilya doesn't tell his team about his family until they've already invented a thousand conspiracies about it. Like him being in the mob. Or having rabies.
In which Ilya Rozanov and Yuri Plisetsky are brothers, and the world changes with the most minute of connections.
Now featuring Shane and Ilya's POVs on the canon divergence starting from chapter 5.

The edges of the picture had begun to bend; Shane was like a firework on the very verge of a convulsive explosion. The skirting of the doorway and the hand there gripping it were each as white as the other, and although the phone in his pocket rang and rang Shane made no move to answer it. It had been ringing since he’d last been an idiot, around seventeen minutes ago- when he had sent that stupid fucking message to Ilya Rozanov: “We didn’t even kiss”. _______ Or, its 2014 and the NHL has returned to Vegas. Shane sends that text and falls head-first off the deep end with a bottle from the hotel's mini fridge. Ilya must try to bring him back.

Take me out the dark (take me home) by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Ilya rounded the desk, and his heart didn’t stutter but simply stopped. For an endless second everything stilled around him. Shane had found them, his letters and his journals. And the world turned sideways slowly slipping away from Ilya’s grasp. Like someone had taken away the solid ground underneath his feet, leaving him falling indefinitely. His entire focus narrowed on the pages Shane was clasping in his hands and the shoe carton next to him.
He had always promised himself that one day he would show Shane, he would tell him about all of it. But he had never wanted it to happen like this. For Shane to just stumble across the pages that carried his darkest thoughts and simple truths of his life. Never wanted him to read those alone or ever. Because Ilya wasn’t sure he was strong enough to revisit all the open wounds he had spilled on those pages.
---
Or Shane and Ilya spend some time at the cottage between Christmas and New Year’s and unravel their past once and for all.

Shane’s heart drops into his stomach. “Ilya,” he breathes. His vision goes blurry, throat tight. He tries to swallow it down and focus, shove his swirling thoughts into a neat little box, but it’s impossible. He feels—he might throw up, actually. “Are you seriously telling me you tried to fucking kill yourself?” “Yes,” Ilya agrees blandly, “It did not work.” Ilya calls Shane from the hospital. Shane handles it very normally.

A bottle of pills lies discarded on the floor, empty. Shane’s body is splayed over his side of the bed like a ragdoll, his arm hanging off the side in a cruel caricature of how Ilya had found his mother all those years ago. Ilya isn’t sure what noise he is making. He doesn’t care. His body feels like it’s being ripped apart. The pain is akin to being skinned alive. or: Ilya comes home to his worst nightmare.
