“Why am I here?” Shane asks, braver than he feels.

“Because you are very special, Shane. And it was time for me to bring you home.”

“Are you hurt?” Ilya presses in the long silence. “Is bad?”

Another indistinct sound, maybe movement, comes over the speaker before Shane talks again. “A little. Maybe. I don't know. I…” he trails off as a background noise draws his attention. “Shit. Shit, Ilya, I have to-”

The call disconnects before Shane can explain what he has to do. Ilya lowers the phone, staring at the blinking four letters above the painfully short call duration, and swipes the redial button without a second thought.

Raised as the Yakuza's Wakagashira, Shane Hollander only knows discipline. The Bratva Pakhan's son, Ilya Rozanov, has only ever been feared. When their worlds converge, what begins as a rivalry becomes something far more dangerous: a secret, forbidden relationship forged in violence, restraint, and yearning neither of them should be allowed. In the criminal underworld, love is leverage, and survival means knowing when to hide the truth and when to pull the trigger. A mafia AU about their forbidden romance, rivalry, violence, and what it means to choose each other in spite of it all. Enemies by design. Lovers by choice. -prev. titled “The Yakuza Enforcer and the Bratva Prince”-

Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice. He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone. Impact. The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp. -------------------------------- Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

Shane sends him a text that says 'thinking about your cock' with a picture of his rippling abs, and even though Ilya really appreciates the abs, all he can think about is the faint bruise blooming on Shane's ribs, and whether it hurts him very badly, and whether there's anything Ilya could do to make it hurt less, if he were there. He wants to be there, he realizes. He wants to be there for the rest of his life.

He has to duck out of the team weight room so he can cough up a fistful of petals.

    So.
