Ilya volunteers some information first. "I am good with runes, very good. It's something I study and practice in depth. But I am strongest as a conduit."
The words stun Shane for a moment and it's a fair reaction. It's clear that Shane understands the full implications of the admission. "A conduit?" His voice is soft as he repeats the word.
They stand side by side, both staring at the menu and not talking to each other.
Ilya chances a look at Shane's face and can still see the shock lingering in his expression. But he's checking for pity and feels a small amount of relief that he can't seem to find it.

It’s the most famous cold case in hockey history. Up-and-coming Russian phenom Ilya Rozanov mysteriously vanishes the summer before his rookie season. Despite extensive police work, no trace of the young superstar is ever found.
Shane Hollander remembers Ilya Rozanov. Better than most. And now, several years retired and with two highly successful hockey biographies under his belt, he’s taking a crack at the mystery that’s haunted his own career with strings of what-ifs and memories revisited so often they’ve softened like old cotton.
Perhaps now, with the long eye of perspective between him and those memories, he can unravel the short lifetime of the man poised to become his biggest rival and best kept secret. Travelling to Russia he searches for stories and the answers they hold.
If only this damn dog that’s apparently a local cryptid would stop raiding his trash cans.
It has wandered this place for years. It knows every stream, every hill, every tree. Every pale, flat face in the place of straight lines. It does not know this face. But it remembers dark eyes and star-dots across the cheeks.
It cannot remember its own name. But it remembers him.

"She's my fairy godmother," Shane says, loud enough for Ilya to hear, as he stares at himself in the mirror.
There's a long, long pause. Then Ilya laughs loudly, a genuine burst of surprise that reverberates off the doorway. "Very funny, Hollander. And you are my cute little house elf. What does that make me?"

“I don’t think you’re supposed to smoke here.”
Pointing at the sign that was posted literally above Rozanov’s head, Shane’s ire at the Angel-kin’s lack of respect for the rules grows when Rozanov doesn’t even look up.
The flint strikes on the lighter again, to no avail.
“Devil-kin who likes rules. Wow.” Rozanov’s voice is deep, much deeper than Shane was expecting, and it sends a shiver down his spine that knocks his tail loose from his waist. It lashes behind him, broadcasting his irritation for anyone to see, and Shane’s cheeks flush with embarrassment.

I want to see you tonight.Oh, that was safe. A classic really. Ilya went to type something deeply horny as a followup to get Shane riled up before he got to the hotel room, but he blinked and saw he had already sent a second text.
Lily:
I want to hold you close, and find out if you have any new freckles. I need to know, so next time I picture you, I do it right.Ilya throws his phone across the room. It hits the wall, where it falls to the floor and lays face-up, screen dark. Oh, this was bad.
