  1. Someone’s been calling Ilya’s name for a while now, but Ilya’s got the viewfinder to his eye, the whole world shrunk down to that single square of light, and he hates being interrupted when he’s shooting.

Ilya is a professional photographer; Shane is a journalist, working for a rival newspaper.

  2. What if, after they first meet at the 2008 Prospect Cup, Shane Hollander goes back to Russia with the Rozanovs to play hockey with Ilya's team for 3 months on a hockey exchange program? And what if, in preparation for this trip - which Shane knew about for months and Ilya did not - Shane learned enough Russian to get by? Oh and they're attracted to each other but neither one of them made the first move before they're on a plane together, and suddenly they've got to spend 3 months living in the same apartment, in Russia, under the watchful eyes of Ilya's family and a team full of teenage hockey players...

  3. There, in an overhung area that had been initially blocked from view, was what could only be described as a Greek god in Adidas track pants and La Sportiva Solutions. The god was hanging off a purple sloper with his left arm, shaking out and chalking up casually with his right. Shane barely noticed himself taking a few steps forward as he squinted at the grade. V9. Shane watched as the climber matched his hands and then carefully rotated on his toe to dip his left hand back into the chalk bag swinging at his hips. A little puff of chalk exploded out onto the man’s bare lower back, an area Shane had been trying to ignore, as he always tried to ignore the muscled backs of the bros who tore off their shirt as soon as they got in the gym. His eyes drifted upward, taking in the impressive lats, flexing and glistening with a sheen of sweat, and all the way up to the tousled blonde hair...

What the fuck. Was that…? Shane blanched as he realized that he recognized the climber. He wasn’t a Greek god at all. He was Russian. And not a god either, but that was besides the point. It was Ilya Rozanov, the top male youth boulderer in Russia, winner of last year’s IFSC Youth World Championship, where Shane had gotten 4th place.

  4. In room 1410, Ilya Rozanov is ready to walk out the door after successfully getting his 19 year old hockey rival into bed. He knew how to make this moment happen and he knows what they have to be to each other now that it's over. But as he turns the doorknob to leave, he's stopped with questions he never expected. And giving Shane Hollander what he needs in that moment will change everything.

I note which chapters are SFW vs NFSW, because many of you said knowing meant the difference between reading this on your lunch break or having to wait. (Thank you for wanting to read my work that much.)

Covers the first two years of their rookie seasons (which is mostly skipped over in the show/books). Canon divergent from the first hookup seen in HR s01ep01. Most things are from the show but the timeline is a mix of both; Hunter and Marleau are aged up per the show instead of as young as they are in the books. (Also, Shane and Ilya don't wait *two years*, they stick to the book timeline. IYKYK.)

Please note this will the first in a series; you can subscribe to the whole series as well so you don't miss anything :)

  5. “Hi Milana,” he murmured, voice gentle. “I’m Ilya, your father’s brother. Did your mama tell you I was coming over?”

Milana nodded and pulled her bottom lip into her mouth, gaze contemplative as Ilya held out a hand to her. He didn’t touch her, didn’t broach the barrier of the doorframe, just held his palm out, a gesture of vulnerability, exposing soft skin. When he’d been a child, listening out for the sound of his father’s footfalls down the hall, trying to guess at what mood the man was in that day, if today was a day he would likely be hit, those gestures of vulnerability–upturned palms, tears on cheeks–had been the only thing he’d trusted. The wounded animal in his sternum reaching out for comfort, seeking safety in the fragility of others. Proof that he wasn’t the weakest one.

Or: After spending Christmas with the Hollanders Ilya realises he has unfinished business in Moscow; namely, saying goodbye to his mother's grave and recovering the pieces of his history. Before meeting Shane at the cottage for their second summer together - and before upending his life and moving to another country once again - Ilya decides to return to his home city and attempt to lay his past to rest.

  6. During introductory interviews, Ilya always got the same types of questions: when did he start playing ice hockey? Did he learn to skate as soon as he learned to walk? Did he spend his entire childhood on the ice to be as good as he was at ice hockey? He always laughed them off, making the same kind of jokes about being able to skate before he could walk and skipping school to be on the rink instead. Don’t be like me, kids, he told the interviewers and the cameras. Don’t skip school.

The truth is that Ilya’s first love wasn’t actually skating.

Or: part three of tattoo artist Ilya AU, where we find out how he ended up in Montreal in 2020 and started his romance with Shane.

  7. Sometimes, Ilya Rozanov is just a weird guy. Obviously, the Bears aren’t going to say that to his face, not when he’ll chirp them into oblivion for it, but sometimes it just gets out of hand.

Like the late night phone calls where he’s talking aggressively in Russian. The random knowledge he has offhand about how far you can throw a human being and have them come out okay. The Russian death metal he forces them to listen to, calling it family bonding. The scars he refuses to talk about.

Cliff Marleau thinks he might be in the Russian mob. The Bratva, or whatever they call it.

Ilya doesn't tell his team about his family until they've already invented a thousand conspiracies about it. Like him being in the mob. Or having rabies.

In which Ilya Rozanov and Yuri Plisetsky are brothers, and the world changes with the most minute of connections.

Now featuring Shane and Ilya's POVs on the canon divergence starting from chapter 5.
