“Don't be a dick,” Shane huffs.

“Me? Never.” Ilya ducks to kiss Shane's cheek, then his nose, then the opposite cheek, pressing their faces together. He can't help kissing Shane again, on the temple this time, before he continues. “I must be lucky,” he says, “to know you are most boring man alive.”

The practice rink is busy, tonight. Under the stern tutelage of Coach Baranov, everyone here is fighting to justify their time on the ice. Hockey, Baranov tells them, often, is not a team sport. Hockey is an act of violence, and of endurance.

Jackie suddenly appeared behind Hayden. She was smiling widely as she took her place next to Hayden, slipping her arm round her husband. "Shane, Ilya, so glad you guys made it!"

With one arm, Rozanov pulled her out of Hayden's embrace and twirled her around. "Ah, I have missed you Jackie. You are looking very sexy today, well done."

    Patrice's jaw dropped.

Surely even Ilya Rozanov wasn't flirting with another man's wife in front of her husband and his own husband?

Pat glanced at Kate, giving her his 'I told you so' look.

But Jackie just laughed. "Thank you, Ilya."

"You are very welcome. Is tragic for you now your husband is so old. Anyway, here is gift for old man. I wanted to give Viagra-"

    "Oi!"

Jesus, this guy didn't know when to stop, did he?

"-But Shane said was 'inappropriate'," He made finger quotes with his fingers as he spoke and then shrugged, a shit-eating grin on his face. "Sorry, Jackie, I tried to help."

“Yes. In recent games-” Ilya paused. Hollander didn’t interrupt him. “Have you read what they said about you?”
    “Who’s they?”
    “People. Hockey people.”
Hollander stared Ilya down. “Is this supposed to motivate me?”
    “No, um, I-”
“You should see the shit they say about *you*.”
Ilya most definitely did see it.

  12. Ilya hadn't responded for several hours. Just before warm ups, at the last possible second, Ilya had sent two photos.
The first was the nightstand beside Shane's bed, where his boring hockey book and sexy glasses sat arranged with a strip of condoms and the bottle of lube. The second was Ilya's suitcase open on the floor.

Shane had seen it. He had told Ilya, when he'd skated up to him during stretches, that leaving the suitcase open there was a tripping hazard. Ilya had laughed him back to the Metros bench.

    He wasn't laughing now.

  13. “And because—” Ilya stopped. He was not a man who stopped easily, who lost words, whose tongue failed him. Shane did this to him: removed his fluency, made him reach for things that were not in their usual places. “Because, Ilya?” Shane stepped closer, and Ilya could smell him—the scraping tang of metal and stretched leather and beneath that, something faintly sweet—and this, in combination with the use of his name, made him dizzy, weak. “Because I would rather be known by you than survived by you," Ilya managed. “And if I am to be killed, I would rather it be by you than by another stranger.” Shane went very still. “I’m still a stranger,” Shane said after a moment. “Less now,” Ilya answered. ⋆ or: shane, as part of the winter soldier program, and ilya as the son of its creators. 14. Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.

During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. As they race against the clock to save Ilya's life, Shane reckons with the secrets they have been forced to keep and fears that they might never get to live their truth out in the open.

Ilya lies on the ground and looks up at the stars and waits to die.
    The pavement is cold.
Ilya wonders if his mother was cold when she died. He thinks maybe not, since she didn’t die in a deserted alleyway in Vancouver. But she did die at home, and maybe that was even colder.

In a world where the Cold War ended but the Iron Curtain never fell, Ilya Rozanov is the most promising figure skater in Russia. At only 19, he’s an easy candidate for gold at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, one of the only times Russia allows its citizens to leave the USSR.
And then one mistake means Russia will never let him come back. Hollander won’t stop trying to talk to him, but the last thing Ilya wants to do is talk to the man who ruined his life. He might be stuck in Canada, a refugee, for the rest of his life, but that doesn’t mean he has to talk to Hollander ever again.
He wanders Vancouver aimlessly and doesn’t think about Russia, or Hollander, or the ice that can never be home again.

“I have many questions,” Ilya drawls, cheek still pressed into Shane's leg. “I am fine? Mm, probably.” He quirks his lips in a smile that doesn't reach his eyes. “I will know for sure after we talk.”

When Shane starts to sit up, Ilya lowers his legs onto the mattress and slinks up beside him. He hasn't taken off his sneakers yet. “I'm not gonna kill you, or anything, if you're worried.”

    “Comforting,” Ilya rumbles.
