The scream that rips its way out of Shane’s chest is feral, inhuman. A wretched, mournful wail being torn from his body by the bony hands of grief. He collapses to his knees and sobs, anguish pouring out of him like a tidal wave. Suddenly there are arms around him, but they’re not the right ones. Not Ilya. Or, Ilya’s plane goes down.

“Because you want to ride my bike. You stare at it with those pretty Bambi eyes. I know those looks, and those looks cause trouble.”

“What if I like trouble?” Shane asked innocently, their breaths mixing together. He could see the sparkles in Ilya’s eyes. In this moment, Shane had officially voiced his decision, there was no turning back now. From this gang, from Ilya.

“You don’t.” Ilya answered for him. But then they were crashing together.

PLANE CARRYING OTTAWA CENTAUR’S HOCKEY TEAM, COACH, PERSONNEL, REPORTEDLY LOST CONTACT, PRESUMED MISSING - Shane’s eyes scan over the words, once, twice. It’s not true. It’s some mistake. He knows it. “Lost contact?” Hayden asks, his tone a mix of concerned and confused. “What’s that mean? Like they lost their ability to communicate? Won’t that make landing hard?” J.J. frowns. “I do not think they will be landing,” he says solemnly. -- The Ottawa Centaurs plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness. Shane tries to get answers while Ilya tries to stay alive.

The team has just come back into the locker room and Ilya is sitting in front of his stall, unlacing his skates, when his world changes. “Oh, fuck,” Bood says. He’s got his phone in his hand and a stricken expression on his face. “The Metros plane had to make an emergency landing.” -- Or: Shane's plane is the one that almost crashes.
