Ilya has been thinking about his mother again. Not that he ever really stops but lately...Yes, lately he is thinking about Irina Rozanova but also about Irina Sokolova. About Irina before Alexei or Ilya. Before Grigori Rozanov. Irina Sokolova - the champion figure skater. The world championship title she won. The routine she developed and agonised over and perfected but never took to the Olympics.
And he has been doing something stupid. Something he absolutely should not be doing. But he is one year away from reaching an age his mother never got to see and he needs...something. He’s pretty sure it’s this particular something.
But Dr. Galina has been implying that perhaps it is only stupid in the way that falling in love with your arch-rival is stupid. So maybe he should just give up already and get on with it.

"Hey, are parties just… like that, for you?" Shane asks. "Like the figure skating kickbacks were in Sochi?"
"What do you mean? Like what?" Joe asks.
"Like. I don't know. Fun?"
"Yeah? Do you go to a lot of bad parties?"
"I don't know." Shane stuffs some kale in his mouth.
"So yes."
It gets lonely at the top. In Sochi, unrivaled generational hockey talent Shane Hollander reconnects with his old skate training buddy, Joe.

In front of them stands the old-school theater Shane had selected, fully alabaster save for its glittering marquee and large neon letters spelling out AERO. To his relief, the crowd of waiting patrons out front number few on this Monday evening, and everyone present seems too focused on their own plans or cinematic immersion to pay them any mind.
“Shane.” Beside him, an incredulous voice sounds. “A movie?”
“Fuck you. We’re barely drafted at this point, remember? So not crazy rich yet.” Rather than allowing Ilya’s reaction to trigger any doubt, Shane laughs as he reminds them both. “And come on, we’re near Hollywood. It makes total sense for a first date as teenagers.”
Weeks before their wedding, Shane and Ilya return to all the places that mattered - and resurrect all the memories they could’ve shared over the years.

The problem, Shane muses in hindsight, is that he commits to things too hard.
He puts his all into everything. He wouldn’t be who he is without it.
The fact that he can’t resist a challenge, even if it’s stupid, is more of the problem than anything else.
In which Shane has hidden talents, Ilya runs to catch up, the internet spirals, and Yuuri, Viktor and Yuri are dragged along for the ride…

Ilya lies on the ground and looks up at the stars and waits to die.
The pavement is cold.
Ilya wonders if his mother was cold when she died. He thinks maybe not, since she didn’t die in a deserted alleyway in Vancouver. But she did die at home, and maybe that was even colder. In a world where the Cold War ended but the Iron Curtain never fell, Ilya Rozanov is the most promising figure skater in Russia. At only 19, he’s an easy candidate for gold at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, one of the only times Russia allows its citizens to leave the USSR.
And then one mistake means Russia will never let him come back. Hollander won’t stop trying to talk to him, but the last thing Ilya wants to do is talk to the man who ruined his life. He might be stuck in Canada, a refugee, for the rest of his life, but that doesn’t mean he has to talk to Hollander ever again.
He wanders Vancouver aimlessly and doesn’t think about Russia, or Hollander, or the ice that can never be home again.- Language:

Yelena Hollander-Rozanova is the best female figure skater in Canada, maybe even the world. Shane knows this, he does, but that doesn't stop the dread he feels awaiting her turn to take the ice for her chance at her first Olympic bid. Ilya is trying to keep his spirits up, but Lena not telling him anything about her new program sure isn't helping his anxiety. a.k.a: the one where hollanov's daughter does a free skate program to Diamonds by Rihanna and tries to surprise them with it.

“I don’t want to smell that place again,” he says. “I don’t want to hear that language around me like that. I don’t want to be small again.” His chest tightens. His breathing gets shallow. He hates this part. The moment when the past stops being something he remembers and starts being something he feels. “I can’t,” he repeats. “I really can’t.” There’s a long pause. Then Ilya exhales shakily and adds, quieter now, almost breaking, “But I can’t leave her alone.” or; when ilya's niece loses her mother and reaches out to him in secret, he returns to russia with shane to get her out of an unsafe home.
