"If this is it," Shane whispered, so quietly only Ilya could hear, "you won't face a single second of it alone."
Ilya closed his eyes. His fingers tightened around Shane's hand with everything he had left.
He saw the fear in Ilya’s eyes.
Then he saw nothing.
*******
It was supposed to be an ordinary flight. Instead, it becomes the worst day of their lives.
They were never meant to be on the same plane. Then the unthinkable happens. It goes down.
As terrified passengers flee the wreckage, Shane refuses to abandon the man he loves, even as rescuers and survivors alike order him to get out. Trapped beneath twisted metal, Ilya is running out of time. And while they wait for help, the secret they've spent years protecting slips into the hands of strangers with phones.
In an instant, the whole world is watching. Hockey can burn. The headlines can wait.
Shane Hollander has exactly one job: keep Ilya alive.
Because if they survive this, he'll have to protect more than Ilya's life. He'll have to protect everything they've built together against impossible odds.

12:00 AM- January 1st, 2004, 12 years old. Ilya clumsily shifts forward, knocking their noses together. Shane's breath hitches at the contact. Then all he feels is Ilya’s lips making contact with the corner of his mouth. All his senses leave his body. His mind is blank. The only things that exists are hazel eyes, golden curls, and the Russian boy in front of him, whose lips feel soft against Shane's or Shane and Ilya meet at boarding school in Canada in 2003. They would die for each other, they are best friends...they are also totally in love with one another and are just too stubborn and scared to admit it out loud.

The Husband's Out Of The Bag by Anonymous

“Hollander, go back to your bench or—”
And… he just snaps. Throwing away the helmet he wasn’t aware he’s taken off, he barks, his voice booming. “That’s my fucking husband laying on the ice. I have every fucking right to he here. He’s my husband. I make the decisions here. If he…”—he can’t bring himself to complete the sentence, his eyes welling up with unshed tears—“If anything happens to him, all of you, every single fucking one of you, will answer to me. And rest assured, if you fuck up because you are too busy yelling at me to get him the help need needs, I will not be as gracious as I am being right now.”
The uproar in the arena is deafening as the ref finally skates out of his way, but Shane is by Ilya’s side now, his hand clutching his husband's. “I am here, baby,” he repeats over and over again. First in English, then in Russian. “You are okay. You are going to be okay, my love.”

Ilya was barely back from the World Juniors and had barely met Shane Hollander when his hockey career was taken from him. He was so close to escaping everything in Russia, only to be caught by his brother, ruined by his father, and forced to marry Svetlana to escape.
Now he's finally on his own, with his shitty studio apartment, his shitty job as a facilities tech in the Raider's Stadium, and his overall shitty life. Nothing could get worse from here, and he has no reason to think it'll get better. Until he runs into Shane fucking Hollander while smoking behind a club, maybe he could get a second chance with the man he's been secretly crushing on for years?

In 2016, Shane walked out of Ilya's life and never looked back.
In 2017, Ilya poured gasoline all over his career, struck a match, and walked away from the ashes.
In 2026, their paths cross again at the scene of a car accident that kills Shane’s wife Rose and injures both Shane and his 4 year old daughter, Sophie.
Suddenly, the quiet, unassuming life that Ilya has worked so hard to build for himself crumbles as he confronts the fact that he's never gotten over Shane Hollander.

Somehow, inexplicably, he winds up on the Savannah Bananas, an exhibition baseball team.
He coaches skating for kids in the off season.
For the first time in years, Shane has fun again.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper called it an international emergency in his address to the Canadian public. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin claimed Russia was devoting every resource to it. The endless loops of crawling chyrons titled it Hockey Held Hostage. Eventually, Wikipedia settled on ‘The Sochi Affair’:
The Sochi Affair (Russian: Сочинское дело; French: affaire Sotchi) was a multinational hostage and extortion crisis that began on Thursday, February 20, 2014, when Olympic ice hockey players, Shane Hollander of Canada and Ilya Rozanov of Russia, were abducted from the Iceberg Skating Palace during the Sochi Winter Olympics and held hostage in southwestern Kazakhstan for 3 months, 19 days.
The world was captivated when Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander went missing, but no one will ever know what they found in the face of survival.

Ilya Rozanov told the hockey gods his plans: sign in Ottawa, start a charity named after his mother, date Shane Hollander, play hockey until the shelves in the trophy room collapse, retire, come out (?), kiss his someday husband in every boring restaurant and boring grocery store and public place imaginable.
After being carted off the ice with a career-threatening injury, Ilya has the distinct feeling he is being laughed at.

Galina stopped writing to look at Ilya. "Do you think he'd be willing to talk to you next time it happens, even if it's late?"
Ilya's stomach turned over. He didn't even want to consider it, but he knew the answer. "Yes. But he silences his phone at night."
"Most phones these days have an option to let certain numbers ring through, even on Do Not Disturb. Do you think he'd be open to setting that up for you?"
Imagining that conversation made Ilya nauseous. Yes, no fucking doubt, Shane would be open to it if Ilya explained the reason. "I'm not going to ask him to do that."
Set during The Long Game, an alternate version where the plane scene doesn't happen. Instead, there's this: a car crash, a therapist's duty to report, and an urgent reckoning with priorities.
