1 – 8 of 8 Works in Grief

  1. If you’re wondering what the fuck happened to Scott Hunter, the answer is this: a series of cascading catastrophic decisions. A domino effect, a Rube Goldberg machine that starts at a club in Ibiza and ends with him eating a Montreal bagel on the floor.

In which Scott Hunter accepts a trade to Montreal, just as Shane Hollander is named captain.

  2. “What makes him your best client?” Kip asks.

“He’s nice, his dog is well behaved, the apartment is insane, and he has a very set schedule. It’s not a daily gig, it’s kind of random. You have to stay at his place in the Upper West Side a few times a week, but again, the apartment is amazing. He’s some kind of athlete? So the schedule is also nuts. But he gives, like, six months of dates in advance.” Maria answers.

A set schedule of dates works for Kip, who is, these days, trying to make his own schedule.

“And,” Maria smiles wide, “I think you’ll like him.”

That beatific expression will come back to him, five days later, when he meets Scott Hunter for the first time.

Kip Grady is a PhD student who takes a side-gig walking Scott Hunter's dog. Along the way: the precarity of academia vs hockey; keeping something good at arm's length despite an innate desire for safety and love; gratuitous metaphors about both.

  3. “No, malyshka. Not sad.” Ilya turns and kisses her palm. “I am happy.”

Ilya stills after the words leave his mouth, skin prickling with warmth. He means it, he realizes.

He’s spent so much of the last decade convincing himself that he was not sad. But being happy, being happy like this—effortlessly, accidentally, on purpose—is different. Ilya can’t remember the last time he’d thought it and meant it. I am happy.

    “Ilya?” Shane asks softly.

“I’m okay. I—” Ilya sniffs, wipes at his cheeks. It’s all useless when he looks down at Emi again, when he sees himself staring back. His lip trembles. “My mama would have loved her.”

  4. Ilya googles Scott Hunter in his hotel room at night. He reads some interviews too.

Scott Hunter is an orphan. He lost his parents when he was twelve. A drunk driver killed them both.

    Twelve.

Ilya’s stomach tightens into a knot. He can’t keep the memories away. They’re rising from the grave he tried to bury them in so many times. Mama.

  5. Kip is hit with a wave of relief when he sees Scott at the front of the crowd, sweat-dried hair a mess from everyone rubbing his head. He’s out of his pads and jersey, in a black Under Armor shirt Kip has only ever seen in the laundry. The charge of seeing Scott like this, sizzling with energy and salty with sweat, surrounds Kip like a net and pulls him under.

He is not used to this feeling, the thrill that courses through him that this Scott—team captain, public figure—can be claimed as his. He wants to do so, but has no idea how to negotiate this new world and new arrangement. Scott scans the room and sees him, eyes bright.

Scott and Kip have only been back together, properly, for three months when Scott comes out. Now it's the summer after.

  6. In 2008, Shane Hollander lost to Ilya Rozanov. Fresh-faced, hungry. Like he’d been living off victory points that were scraps compared to the real thing, compared to beating Rozanov, the first man in the world to make him feel second-best. Back then, he’d thought that was the only thing he felt, too. That the electric pulse jostling between them in the gym some time later was a trick of the mind. It was like seeing sky above for the first time. See you at the draft. Life in that paper body.

or: Ilya comes back. This is the crux of it.

  7. “Be careful,” Shane frets, one hand hovering over Ilya’s shoulder. “It’s icy, and I don’t want to be a widower.” “Oh, we’d have to be much higher than this for the fall to kill me,” Ilya says, gaze still fixed on the cool black skyline. “At least seven stories.” It’s not until much later, as the waitress is clearing the dishes from dinner, that Yuna finds herself wondering why Ilya knows exactly how high a fall needs to be in order to kill him. Or: Yuna learns about Ilya's past bit by bit over the years.

  8. Everyone has a gay cousin and if you don't have one, you are the gay cousin.

    Shane Hollander is not exceptional.
