  1. After the Tuna Melt Incident, Shane and Ilya gradually started drifting apart. Texts became more scarce, hook-ups less frequent and feelings pushed aside until, in the moment of absolute panic, Shane ghosted Ilya fully.

Now, three years later, Shane Hollander and Rose Landry are engaged. Shane's life finally seems to be going in the right direction. No distractions, great girl, lots of hockey.

And then the new season starts and trades between teams happen.
And Ilya Rozanov, whom Shane promised himself to forget, is suddenly on the same team.
And, worst of all, he becomes the Alternate Captain.

  2. The sun was shining through the cottage window, painting the room in a golden light. Shane, ever the early riser, has been already up for an hour or so, watching Ilya’s every feature transform in the changing light. The faint amount of freckles that dot Ilya’s face –not the same kind Shane has, but still visible for those who are close enough–, his long, naturally curly eyelashes, his slightly parted lips and twitching nose are all things Shane could never get enough of. or Shane and Ilya spend a lazy day together durring their stay at the cottage.

  3. It occurs to Shane, distantly, that he’ll have to wear the defaced jersey and his sweaty uniform pants if he wants to leave the locker room. He really, really wants to leave the locker room.

His feet won’t move, though, like the bottom half of his body is suddenly made of lead, while the rest of him twists uncontrollably in the wind. His head feels like it’s floating off into outer space.

    Traitor.

Things get worse for Shane after he and Ilya get outed to the world. Ilya and the Centaurs help soften the blow.

Irina once told Ilya a bedtime story about Apollo accidentally killing his lover during a game. Ilya crashes into Shane during a game and the similarities are all too much for him.

  5. “Ilya, you need to fucking breathe,” Shane was trying to stay calm, but there was something about this situation - about the person at the forefront of this fucking situation - which made this feel different. Shane didn’t like to treat any casualty differently, but this? This really did feel more personal. “Come on. Just take a breath on your own. Just a little one. I can help you, but please, just one on your own.” Shane went back down, lips on Ilya’s, nose pinched shut, air filling his empty fucking lungs. Shane’s air becoming Ilya’s air. Shane’s air responsible for getting some blood to Ilya’s heart. OR, lifeguard shane saves rich boy ilya's life, and turns out, they don't hate each other like they both thought they did.

  6. Bood only laughs and lets the video loop over from the start, reaching out to clap a hand down onto Ilya’s shoulder. “You’ll understand one of these days, kid.”

Ilya's beer tastes sour on his tongue.

I already understand, Ilya thinks desperately. I have a daughter and she is the best thing to happen to me except for the man that I made her with and I am full of so much love that I could burst.

  8. Shane and Ilya have written their own vows for the wedding.

    -----

“I cannot stop thinking about him. This slow fucking hockey player with the freckles. Since we were seventeen in Saskatchewan. In that car park. I cannot stop thinking about him. That car park and the gym that night after draft pick and all the hotel rooms and All Stars and all of my texts you never answered and all of the ones you did.” He takes a breath, confesses. “And when I drank a whole bottle of vodka after I won the Stanley Cup to stop myself from fucking texting you.
“Was a terrible problem, then. When I was twenty. And twenty-two and twenty-four. Twenty-five. And I would think, this is going to kill me. I would think, then, that maybe I had spent more time wanting to see you when I could not than I had spent doing anything else. Even hockey.”

    ----

Is Ilya going to tell Shane he has a weak backhand in their wedding vows? Yes, yes he is. Will Shane speak Russian? Did he secretly get help from Svetlana to prep for this? Is anyone going to mention the secret sex condo? Can Ilya avoid having to thank Scott Hunter in his actual vows? He’s certainly going to try.

  9. Ilya had never really let himself picture it before. Not for too long, anyway. Himself at twelve, standing in that doorway, seeing her lifeless body on the bed. He didn’t have any photographs of himself from that age, which made it easier to keep the memory at a distance. Just a fact. Something that happened to a version of himself he barely remembered being. Niko turning twelve closed that distance. Ilya is going through a depressive episode. Which is hitting differently now that his son is the same age he was when his mom died.

  10. “Ilya, baby,” he started, instinctively, in English. “Slow down a little, I-” “Что?” he murmured, blinking at him, confused now. “Почему…?” Or: Ilya is the one taking a hit on the ice. He’s brought to the hospital, concussed. When he wakes, he can only speak Russian… and Shane has been studying.

  11. A look at the year that Ilya still played for Boston, except they explicitly state their dom/sub relationship, and explore that dynamic (and kink) together.

    ————

When they first started, it was by accident. Ilya followed Shane’s lead; he read his body and responded with his own. Shane liked to be on his knees for Ilya, and Ilya liked to keep him there.

The first time it went wrong. Shane thought it was his fault. It wasn’t.

  12. Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.
    ——————————————————
During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. As they race against the clock to save Ilya's life, Shane reckons with the secrets they have been forced to keep and fears that they might never get to live their truth out in the open.

During their annual two weeks at the cottage, Shane and Ilya both fall ill (and claim the other is responsible for it) resulting in two days of coughing and chugging electrolytes while neither of them admit how bad they feel. Even though he attempts to hide it, Yuna can hear her son coughing over the phone and decides to go check on him during his yearly 'silent retreat', entirely unaware that he had company. Or that his company came in the shape of Ilya Rozanov.
    ---
Even with the blinds pulled closed to keep the lights out she could still see Ilya Rozanov in her son’s bed; arms wrapped around him tightly. They looked asleep. Not just napping but deeply unconscious.

Yuna supposed that was the effect of the half empty bottle of Nyquil on the nightstand.

She swallowed harshly, stepping closer to the bed. Her son was tucked against Ilya, face buried against his neck as a source of warmth and comfort. “Shane...” she whispered, shaking him gently. “Shane.”

He didn’t stir, breaths steady as he slept like a rock. Her eyebrows knitted together, gaze shifting to Ilya, who had his jaw resting on top of Shane’s head, one of his hands under his shirt to feel his skin against his palm.

  14. Ilya rubbed at his face with both hands, trying to knead the heaviness away. It didn’t budge. Probably just caught something from the kids, he thought to himself. Some kind of virus. Except he'd been feeling like this for weeks now. Maybe longer. It was hard to tell. The days blurred when you were tired, and he’d been tired for longer than he wanted to admit. Maybe it was something still lingering in his system. That happened sometimes, right? Viruses could hang around. He'd read that somewhere. Post-viral fatigue. Yeah. That was probably it. Some dormant virus still working its way out of him. Or, Ilya and Shane are married with kids, living the life they fought for. But Ilya's depression is rearing its ugly head again.

  15. “If it ever gets bad,” he’d said quietly, eyes serious in a way that made Ilya’s chest ache, “you call me. Or you call my parents. You don’t get to drown by yourself anymore. They love you. I love you and that’s not conditional.” Ilya had brushed it off at first. He always did. “I am not drowning.” Shane had just tilted his head. “Promise me anyway.” And because it was Shane, because the word promise meant something sacred to him, Ilya had nodded. “I promise.” (ie. ilya gets sent a photo of irina while shane is in montreal and does the right thing and reaches out for help)

The brush off Shane received when he suggested Ilya try medication was hardly surprising to him. What he found shocking was that he had actually done it. Without telling Shane, no less. And if that wasn't startling enough, finding out the entire hockey community knew because of one ill-timed picture Cliff Marlow took practically knocked him off balance.
    ---
“Who knew Rozanov would be the poster boy for Prozac?” Hayden muttered with a huff. “God, he’s gotta be floating on cloud nine with that dose. Normal people take like what, ten or twenty? Sixty must mean he was damn near suicidal.”

“Probably,” JJ agreed, shrugging. “I wouldn’t know, I don’t need to medicate myself to cope with life.”

“If he’s all doped up, how come he’s still always such an asshole?” one of the rookies questioned, earning a few laughs.

Shane just felt sick to his stomach. And angry. At his team and Marlow and mostly at himself. Ilya had done exactly what he asked and now, he was getting mocked for taking care of himself. In what world was that fair?

“Maybe that’s why he’s so aggressive on the ice,” another theorized. “He's trying to kill himself and take another player with him to make it look like an accident.”

  17. “I wondered if you might be able to… hint that Rozanov and I are friends. On my Instagram and other social media. So, once we announce it, the fans won’t be as shocked,” Shane said.

Nicole blinked. “You want me to soft launch that you and Ilya Rozanov are friends?”

    “Soft launch?”

What was this life Nicole had found herself in? About to explain a soft launch to two-time MHL MVP Shane Hollander?

Rose tells Shane to hire her friend Nicole as his social media manager. Over many months, Nicole starts to notice that Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov might be a little bit more than rivals and friends.

  18. Shane's eyes burned. "What if I hadn't noticed?" "But you did." "But what if I hadn't?" Ilya pulled Shane against his chest, wrapping his arms around him. "You would have. Because you are Shane Hollander. When Shane Hollander has goal—like goal to keep our baby safe—nothing gets past him." He pressed a kiss to Shane's temple. "Is blessing and curse, yes? But mostly blessing." Or, 3 times Shane's hypervigilance caught something wrong with their kids before anyone else did, and 1 time Ilya had to confiscate his laptop.

  19. In a timeline where Scott never worked up the nerve to kiss Kip, Ilya and Shane still make their relationship official but he never decides to play for Ottawa. Instead, they stick to a long-distance relationship which leads to Hayden hiding in a bathroom while his best friend crawls into bed with the most abhorrent man in the entire league.

“He did not hit you on purpose,” Shane defended. “And you attacked him after he helped you up, remember? If the medic didn’t bench you, starting a fight would have. You probably got the better end of the deal.”

Good, Hayden thought to himself. At least he wasn’t going to throw JJ under the bus for what was clearly an accident.

Ilya tsk’d in annoyance. “Don’t act like he didn’t take the opportunity to throw a punch,” he replied. “I saw you go after Marleau, too.”

“Well, I had to go after someone. I couldn’t just stand there why everyone was fighting and look like an idiot,” Shane responded with a shrug. “Besides, it was mild payback for him sending me to the hospital.”

“He said you fight like Pomeranian,” Ilya retorted with a straight face. “Puppy mitts that barely hurt.”
