  1. “Can’t hang out tonight, Hayd. I have plans.”

“Bullshit,” Hayden responds. “You never have plans.”

Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.

In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.

  2. Shane never got hurt during the game after Ilya’s father died and Ilya went through with breaking things off with Shane. Three months after their relationship fell apart, Shane found out that he was six months pregnant.

Five years later, Shane is balancing hockey and a major secret and Ilya moves to the Ottawa Centaurs after several unsuccessful seasons with Boston. Neither of them are ready for how much a chance encounter at a hockey rink is going to change everything.

  3. “I know you’re there,” he spoke gently, proud when his voice sounded nearly confident in spite of the way his hands were shaking under his desk, “I’ve seen you.”

The air in front of him seemed to shimmer in a way that was almost corporeal. Beneath his lab coat, the hair on his arms was standing on end.

Suddenly, so softly that it could hardly be called a whisper, a man’s voice answered, “So what if I am here? What would it matter anyway?”

Or, a scientist and a skeptic, new Team Physician Dr. Ilya Rozanov holds no belief in ghosts or ghouls or anything remotely supernatural, but soon even he can’t ignore the strange and inexplicable occurrences happening around the university’s sports complex.

Hollander Arena isn’t haunted… except for it sort of, probably is.

  5. “Cap needs to get laid more,” Drapeau muttered.

“Cap needs to get laid, period,” Comeau added.

“Dude, I bet he’s still a virgin.” Drapeau said with a snort. “You think he’s ever even seen a woman naked?”

A couple of players standing around them chuckled.

Shane felt his jaw tighten. He wanted to respond. Tell them off. Stand up for himself. But he couldn’t. Because there was some truth to what they were saying.

He did need to get laid more.

  6. Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.
    ——————————————————
During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. As they race against the clock to save Ilya's life, Shane reckons with the secrets they have been forced to keep and fears that they might never get to live their truth out in the open.

  9. Shane is stooped over to strap on his shin guards when his phone buzzes once in Hayden’s hand.

He doesn’t mean to tap the notification.

And oh god, does he wish he could un-tap the fucking notification.

Because why the fuck has Lily, Shane’s mysterious Boston hook-up of several years (no matter how fervently he denies it), sent him a picture of a fucking sonogram.

Black and white, blurry, and undeniably baby-shaped.

  10. It starts with Shane running out of Ilya’s apartment after one too‑intimate moment over a tuna melt. He tries to bury it by dating Rose Landry, but the Montreal club night blows everything open jealousy, staring, avoidance, all of it. Rose eventually breaks up with him gently, seeing the truth he can’t say out loud. At the All‑Star Game, things shift from canon. Ilya avoids Shane completely, never realizing Shane and Rose are over. Then Shane’s injury happens. As opposing captain, Ilya visits him in the hospital, only to have a pain‑med‑softened Shane ask him to come to his family cottage. Ilya says “maybe,” assuming Shane won’t remember, and ghosts him again. Months later, on summer break in Spain, Ilya wanders into the Gaixample and finds himself surrounded by openly queer couples happy, unafraid, everything he’s never let himself imagine. Something cracks open. He thinks of Shane. He texts him. Does Shane remember the invitation? And does Ilya go?

  11. Shane yells at the team after he's outed via one of Hayden's fanvids. It's actually rather cathartic for him. And for the first time, the team gets to see what Shane is like when he's not keeping himself held under so much pressure, and maybe they see why he gets along with Ilya Rozanov so well. ... When Shane walked into the locker room the day after he was outed, the room was already pretty quiet, but somehow his entrance signalled the team to become even quieter; to freeze in place, perhaps even attempt to hold their breath. The door behind him thumped into the frame as an icy silence crept across the room. He doesn't know what to say, how to start. He and Ilya had made plans, of course. He had statements prepared that they had thrown together last minute based on multiple scenarios, his mom and Ilya’s agent had worked through them with them last night. But now that he was faced with a room full of men he had worked with for years, he knew that he couldn't use them here. They were impersonal, dry things meant for corporate PR and social media posts, not the sort of thing you said to your team face to face, and something about the empty silence stretching ahead told him that this wasn't going to be a Scott Hunter coming out story unless he dragged them there kicking and screaming. The scent of old socks and sweat-soaked pads turned even more sour in his lungs. Shane quickly made eye contact with Hayden, who he had talked with on the phone last night- apologizing for his fanvid being the leak. Shane forgave him, it wasn't his fault. He and Ilya should have been more careful. His friend gave him a nod, and a pained smile. He knew how badly Shane had been spiralling about all of this. Shane looked over at JJ, who he hadn't talked to. He wasn't making eye contact now, either. He sucked in a breath, and spoke. “I know you're all thinking it. And I'm releasing a proper statement on social media… right about now. Yes, I'm gay.” You could've heard a pin drop in that locker room. You could, actually, hear one of the showers dripping, and someone's phone vibrate with an incoming message. And Shane definitely heard Drapeau scoff before crossing his arms and glaring at Shane with a mixture of disgust and disdain. “You people are always being all flashy and rubbing our faces in your depravity, why can't you just shut up and let hockey be hockey, eh?” No one else said anything, though from the ashamed glances to the side from some and conspiratorial looks between some others, Drapeau was not the only one thinking it. Hayden looked ready to step in- if unsure what to say when doing so- but Shane shook his head. He didn't need him to speak for him just yet. Because Shane felt shockingly clear-headed in that moment. He'd been spiralling all night since the news had broken, held together only by first Ilya and then his mom's practicality. Even with that terror settled, he'd been low-key panicking over this reveal for the past decade, constantly worrying about when it would happen and what would do it and how people would react. And now it had. And people weren't reacting well. But that was… that was the worst case scenario. There was nothing bad left to happen. He had already talked to management, already knew he was fine with them (though maybe not good) and was definitely finishing out the season. It was done. All that was left to do was ride this out, and fuck if it wasn't a relief that there was nothing terrible left in the roster of panic in his brain. So Shane was all out of fear, and free to just feel completely, incandescently angry. He barked out a laugh, and it seemed to startle some of his teammates. “I was literally fucking doing that, asshole. I had zero plans to have some big flashy coming out moment like Scott Hunter. I just wanted to live my life and play hockey, and if no one had cared about some background detail in a video about something completely unrelated and had just moved the fuck on then we wouldn't have to be having this conversation at all. But everyone else seems to care that the person I'm in love with has a dick, so this is the conversation we're having. Yes, I'm gay. Yes, I have a boyfriend who loves me, and yes, I love him. No, we're not planning on fucking out on the ice in the middle of a game. So, is that enough for you to chill out and trust that I'm still the same fucking person who won this team the cup back to back?” He scanned over the room, and while a few people did seem to be settling, the majority weren't. And one of those was JJ. That was one regret Shane had in this. JJ was his friend, he should have told him a while ago; especially after Hayden had figured it out and the world didn't end, but Shane had always thought there would be more time. JJ’s eyes held that pain of betrayal when he spoke to Shane. “Your boyfriend is Ilya fucking Rozanov. You don't think that'll cause problems when we play the Centaurs?” But that was a question Shane had an easy answer for. “It never has before,” he replied evenly. Then Comeau jumped in. “How are we supposed to believe that? They won our last game-” “That's because they're a good team,” Hayden interjected, trying to relieve some of the pressure on Shane. It didn't really work, though from the side eye he received, the other players had a pretty good idea where he stood in the overall argument now.

  15. “I would hope not,” JJ snorted, nodding as his eyes glanced at Shane’s shirt for a short moment. “Looks a bit big, Hollzy. Trying to put on some muscle and take my spot as Montreal’s enforcer?” Shane frowned, glancing down at the shirt he had thrown on without a second glance. He wasn’t proud of the way he let his alarm run through, keeping him twenty minutes late from the schedule he had planned in his head. It was fine, he reached the airport on time (and was earlier than half of Team Canada). But it had left him frazzled. So frazzled that he hadn’t even stopped to think about the shirt he pulled on. His cheeks burned with stark realisation as he glanced down at the black Bauer shirt he was wearing. It wasn’t his, and JJ clearly knew that too considering it was at least two sizes bigger than the ones Shane usually wore. Because it was Ilya’s. . Or, Shane's habit of stealing clothes from a certain blond Russian and being caught red- handed a few times.

  16. “... Shane?” J.J. asked, reaching to touch his shoulder. “What— who was that? What’s happening?” “Ottawa Hospital I— I’m Ily— I’m Rozanov’s emergency contact.” He blinked. He knew he had to get moving, that he needed to haul ass and get to Ottawa yesterday, but for some reason Shane couldn’t bring himself to move. It felt like he was glued to the floor, fear had his limbs locked up, and everything he should be doing wasn’t coming to him. It was only when J.J. placed his other hand on his shoulder that Shane jerked back to the present.
