  1. “What the fuck are you doing?” Rozanov shouts, which is just insulting. He’s mourned three of his teammates and now she’s tackling him in his bedroom.

Obviously Jackie’s here to kill him, but he’s looking her dead in the eyes and still can’t see a murderer. Talk about a stereotype.

Or: Jackie Pike’s a serial killer making her way through Boston’s roster. Ilya Rozanov is harder to kill than she expected.

  2. For half a decade, every hockey player who wins Rookie of the Year has been found dead within a year of holding the trophy. It’s enough to make even a minimally superstitious athlete a little… concerned. But Shane Hollander isn’t worried about the supposed Calder Curse—until he ends up splitting the award with Ilya Rozanov.

  3. The best time to do it, really, would be just before Rozanov headed back to Moscow. His American friends would think he’d headed home early, and his family in the old country would believe he had stayed in the states longer. The confusion would delay the manhunt a precious few days, enough for Shane to be sure he was well away from the fallout.

So that’s when he would do it, he decided. He would kill Rozanov after one of them won Rookie of the Year.

    -

Shane has successfully gotten away with murder twice by the time he meets Ilya Rozanov, and he’s convinced the man will be his perfect hat trick. After all, such a powerful obsession with Rozanov must go beyond sexual. It must be the urge to kill. It has to be.

  4. The display lights up blue with a simple first name: Lily. Shane pulls over without thinking, smacking ineffectually at the dashboard for his hazards as he scrambles to answer the phone before the chance slips through his fingers.

Once he manages to hit the answer button, he calls out, “Um, hi?” into the staticky silence.

A beat later, Ilya replies, “Hello.” Shane can hear the impish smile on his face as he tugs out the vowels, from the sneaky quirk of his brow to the teeth chasing his full bottom lip. “I am coming to your cottage. Will be on the next flight to Montreal.”

    “What?” Shane asks.

    -

    Shane goes to his cottage.

  5. Kip Grady is on a voyage of discovery, backpacking and hitchhiking his way across the United States. He’s read all the literature, of course, on the dangers of hitchhiking, but this is not something that he’s very concerned about. After all, Kip always makes sure that he’s packed everything he could conceivably need in his backpack. But when he’s picked up by handsome Scott Hunter, it turns out that he is not the only one with skeletons (literal and metaphorical) in the trunk of his vehicle.

or - the chances of two serial killers in a car are slim but never none.

  6. “Fuck. All that Serial Killer talk was you warning me, wasn’t it?” Kip said in a joking tone.

Scott glanced at him. Because yes, he was right. It had been a warning. And like a lamb to the slaughter, Kip had still walked into his trap.

  7. “Are you hurt?” Ilya presses in the long silence. “Is bad?”

Another indistinct sound, maybe movement, comes over the speaker before Shane talks again. “A little. Maybe. I don't know. I…” he trails off as a background noise draws his attention. “Shit. Shit, Ilya, I have to-”

The call disconnects before Shane can explain what he has to do. Ilya lowers the phone, staring at the blinking four letters above the painfully short call duration, and swipes the redial button without a second thought.

  8. “I am not scared,” he lies. Each word is soft but crisply enunciated so Shane can't miss them. “Do you want me scared?”

“Obviously not,” Shane snaps at him. He gestures toward Ilya's waist, toward the slim outline of what he had clocked as a folding knife the second Ilya started carrying it, and adds, “but I know you're not just ‘happy to see me.’ I want the truth, I need to hear that-” he chokes over his words, his lips moving too quickly for his brain to keep up. “Please, be honest with me, for once.”

For a long, silent moment, Ilya just stares at him, grinding his teeth behind a placid expression as if Shane can't tell.

  9. He's getting good at this game: sneaking his questions between advances, keeping Shane in that warm state of mind where he'll actually answer them, and stifling the panic rabbiting in the base of his skull.

“So, this is thing?” He asks, tilting his head to try and catch Shane's eye. “You are most charming murderer.”

“Don't be a dick,” Shane huffs.

“Me? Never.” Ilya ducks to kiss Shane's cheek, then his nose, then the opposite cheek, pressing their faces together. He can't help kissing Shane again, on the temple this time, before he continues. “I must be lucky,” he says, “to know you are most boring man alive.”

  10. “Aren't you gonna- you don't have questions? You're just…” Shane trails off when Ilya kisses the inside of his knee. “...fine with it?”

“I have many questions,” Ilya drawls, cheek still pressed into Shane's leg. “I am fine? Mm, probably.” He quirks his lips in a smile that doesn't reach his eyes. “I will know for sure after we talk.”

When Shane starts to sit up, Ilya lowers his legs onto the mattress and slinks up beside him. He hasn't taken off his sneakers yet. “I'm not gonna kill you, or anything, if you're worried.”

    “Comforting,” Ilya rumbles.

    -

Or, Ilya finds out Shane's pre-game ritual involves murder.
