  1. Ilya is no ordinary Russian: he hates his family, is desperate to leave his country, is attracted to both men and women, and believes in soulmates.
When he meets Shane Hollander and his hypnotising freckles, he knows his life will never be the same again. Maybe, at last, he could finally be happy.

(Aka : What would happen if Ilya and Shane had gotten together at 18? How would they have managed their secret relationship?)

  2. Recovery isn't linear.
Knowing this, and believing it, are two different things.

Shane moves to Ottawa, ready to finally spend time with his soulmate, properly. Maybe the excitement is why he doesn't always notice.

Ilya wins the Cup with Shane at his side, but it doesn't matter as much as it should have. Not when his body hurts and his mind is fragile and he feels one moment away from collapse.

Timeline goes back and forth, but we start off one year after the events of the previous story.
In the end, everything will be okay.

Finding your soulmate is supposed to be beautiful. You stand in front of someone and you say their full name; they say yours. Your soulmarks appear somewhere on your bodies, and it's supposed to be beautiful. Life-changing.

It's not supposed to happen a week before the World Juniors tournament in a dirty Saskatchewan parking lot. It's not supposed to be Canada's newest darling hockey player and your future rival who whispers your name. It's not supposed to be a boy that your skin blooms for.

And if that does happen, despite the fact that it shouldn't, you're definitely not supposed to lie to your soulmate's face, refuse to say his name in return, and pretend that you never felt your soulmark appear at all. And if that happens, somehow, you're definitely not supposed to kiss him less than a year later. And then later. And then later. And then later, until you realize you never want to leave his bed despite the fact that you've never told him the truth about the bear tattoo on your chest.

or, finding out that his soulmate is Shane Hollander isn't beautiful. Ilya can't pretend that it's not life-changing though.

  11. It's not something that they ever talk about. They don't need to acknowledge it, and no one else ever needs to know. Or, no one else needs to know until suddenly Shane is in the hospital and no one will let Ilya see him. (Ilya and Shane are soulmates. It doesn't change everything, but it changes enough.)

  12. The name of your soulmate only appears once your realize you are in love with them.
"Shane Hollander" appears on Ilya's chest before the Sochi Olympics. He tells nobody, and then he disappears.

Six months later, Shane gets a call from an unknown number. Ilya. In Montreal, and completely different.
It doesn't matter, though, and the next morning there's a line of Cyrillic across his chest.

  14. “We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”

Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.

“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”

Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.

  17. Shane stuck his hand out. “Shane Hollander.” He waited for… well, he didn’t know what. A flicker of recognition. Possibly surprise? Delight was perhaps a bit much to hope for, but maybe some kind of excitement about meeting one’s soulmate, the same giddy feeling that was swirling in Shane’s stomach just from standing face to face. Ilya Rozanov gave him nothing. Just glanced between Shane’s face and his hand like Shane had offended him somehow, before finally taking it— —and promptly turning back around to light his cigarette. In which Ilya Rozanov is the name on Shane’s wrist, but Shane Hollander is not on Ilya’s.

Others choose not to believe in soulmates at all. Then, there are those who hear their words from the lips of a rival and simply refuse to believe it. --- What if soulmates existed in the world of Heated Rivalry.
