After Ilya and Shane are outed, Marleau books himself on to the same queer studies course that the Raiders management forced Ilya to attend when he was cancelled for being a homophobe.

It turns out several other Raiders players thought Marleau had the right idea about that. Now around half of the Raiders roster are all sat together in the little classroom. It’s about as chaotic as you would expect. The professor Sandra is forced to add an increasing number of amendments to the ‘Course Rules and Guidelines’ that she never expected to be putting into writing.

    -----
Amendment No. 5. - No, there are no additional course credits for “proving you’re an ally by complimenting your bros in the locker room showers."

Amendment No. 6. - Downloading Grindr will also not get you any extra credits. [ Although if you wish to download Grindr for its intended purposes, I would obviously not want to discourage you in this. ]

Amendment No. 7. - Taking time during games to tell Admirals player Scott Hunter that you think his boyfriend is extremely hot is NOT actually effective allyship within the league. Yes, EVEN if Ilya Rozanov told you it would be.

  2. It was new, knowing he was cohabitating with his mother. They couldn't speak, not truly, and he couldn't feel her touch barring occasional cold spots, but there was a weight in the air just knowing she was there. Growing pains, Ilya thought softly.

Shane and Ilya struggle to be together while juggling his dead ghost mother's unfinished business, the mental illness Ilya swears he doesn't have, homophobia Shane promises he's not a victim of, and Russia which seems unwilling to let them go.

  3. At twenty-one, Ilya Rozanov is the Soviet Union’s most perfect weapon, a soldier of the Red Machine who has spent three years locked in a silent, jagged war on the ice with Canada’s golden boy, Shane Hollander.

When the Montreal Metros claim him as a "wasted" mid-round draft pick, the rivalry transforms from a professional grudge into a desperate lifeline. On the final night of the 1988 Calgary Olympics, he risks everything, his family, his career, and his safety, to start a new life in the West. Forced into a high-stakes billet under the roof of his bitter professional rival, Ilya must navigate a world where freedom feels like a new kind of prison.

As Ilya struggles to adapt, the crumbling Soviet empire reaches across the ocean, searching for leverage to help pull him back.

  5. Following an afternoon of sex and tuna melts, Shane goes searching for the explicit rules of what being 'friends with benefits' entails. In his humble opinion, they're nailing it.

Once friendship is on the table, Shane reconsiders the usefulness and immutability of the public rivalry narrative. Surely the NHL can make just as much money from a bromance as it can from a rivalry?

A missed call from J.J., a dinner at All-Stars, and an ill-considered mad dash to the airport send Shane's season in a very different direction to the disciplined three-peat he'd been planning back in October.

"This rivalry thing: it was everyone else who said we hated each other off the ice. There’s no rule that says we have to keep doing that forever.” Shane stared outside, past the blinding billboards and down at the streets below. “It was nice. Hanging out, last time.”

He knew what it looked like when Rozanov shut down, when he closed himself off and pushed the world away. He’d finish the conversation abruptly, curt, clipped, and retreat. So Shane knew he’d won when Rozanov finally answered with: “Are we six years old, Hollander? Asking if I want to play in sandbox with you?"

  9. “My boyfriend thinks I’m an idiot,” Ilya says. "Well, not really but a bit, maybe.”

“Your boyfriend?” Sandra, the queer studies professor sits down, hard.

“Yes, he thinks it is not smart to say faggot in the locker room when you are locked in the closet and Russia has the keys.”

Ilya had been talking about himself when he’d said it. Making a joke. Sailing a little close to the wind, sick of listening to the background hum of homophobic bullshit. But someone had been filming. The video went viral. The Raiders panicked under the terrible PR. Now he was here.

Sent to Queer Studies 101 to appease twitter. Because he’d been cancelled. For being a homophobe. If was fucking ridiculous.

He turns to the professor. “So, can you help me take on Putin and NHL at same time or I need more advanced class for this?”

Plus Chapter 2 – Social media chapter. Once they've been outed, Ilya gets to demand an apology from twitter.

Ilya lies on the ground and looks up at the stars and waits to die.
    The pavement is cold.
Ilya wonders if his mother was cold when she died. He thinks maybe not, since she didn’t die in a deserted alleyway in Vancouver. But she did die at home, and maybe that was even colder.

In a world where the Cold War ended but the Iron Curtain never fell, Ilya Rozanov is the most promising figure skater in Russia. At only 19, he’s an easy candidate for gold at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, one of the only times Russia allows its citizens to leave the USSR.
And then one mistake means Russia will never let him come back. Hollander won’t stop trying to talk to him, but the last thing Ilya wants to do is talk to the man who ruined his life. He might be stuck in Canada, a refugee, for the rest of his life, but that doesn’t mean he has to talk to Hollander ever again.
He wanders Vancouver aimlessly and doesn’t think about Russia, or Hollander, or the ice that can never be home again.

After their engagement, Ilya and Shane return to Russia under the cover of the Irina Foundation, knowing it may be the last time Ilya ever sets foot there. What waits for him is not closure, but grief, memory, and a past he learned to survive by becoming quiet and hard. It isn’t about going back to the life he escaped. It’s about one final goodbye—to the place that shaped him, and to the mother he never stopped missing. With Shane beside him—steady, patient, and fiercely careful—Ilya faces grief he’s spent years surviving, old fear that still lives in his bones, and the quiet truth he’s been avoiding: some doors don’t close cleanly… but you can still choose how to leave them. This is a story about grief, survival, and choosing a future where home is no longer a place, but a person.

Soooooooo so so so amazingly calm that maybe Shane will reward him with a very nice blowjob later. Ilya has been calm because Shane needs a rock to lean on, but Shane is gone and now Ilya is panicking. This is his only chance to rectify the first, shirtless impression he made on Shane’s father. “Do you still read New Yorker?” OR: Ilya, on the confluence of Shane with David, Yuna, and Svetlana.
