  1. Mere minutes after the Montreal Voyageurs announce their captain, and most adored man in all of Canada, is being benched, local group chats have lit up brighter than an unregulated aftermarket headlight on a lifted truck. Will homophobia be defeated by the only thing more powerful in the world of sports; alcoholic uncles who totally could've gone pro if they didn't pull a muscle right before the scouts showed up for Juniors?

    Or

The city of Montreal riots over Shane Hollander being benched after the FanMail leak.

“Shane,” he says, dread filling his stomach, “is this Boston Lily’s house?”

“Maybe,” Shane says, dropping down another cooler with a loud bang. “But shhhhh,” he says, putting a finger to his lips, “you can’t tell, okay?”

“Shane,” Hayden says, a little desperately. “Shane, we have to go.”

“No,” Shane says, drunk and stubborn and pushing the doorbell about fifty thousand times in quick succession until Hayden pulls his arm away.

“Shane,” Hayden says, nearly a plea, “listen, I know she broke your heart, but dropping off two hundred pounds of tuna isn’t-”

Before he can finish telling Shane that a drive-by tuna fishing isn’t a cure for a broken heart, the door opens. When it does, though, it’s not some buxom Boston beauty in a silky negligee.

    It’s Ilya fucking Rozanov.

Hayden’s one consolation in this mindfuck is that at least Rozanov looks equally surprised at finding himself in this situation.

(while drowning his sorrows post tuna meltdown, shane ends up in possession of approximately two hundred pounds of raw tuna) (naturally, there's only one person he wants to gift with such a bounty)

Theriault blinked, his mouth dropping open, but before he could muster a single word, Marius raised his right arm. He pointed an index finger across the blue line painted on the carpet, zeroing in on two specific stalls near the back bench.

  6. When Brad leaks the FanMail, Hayden Pike is pretty certain that this is something he’ll never be able to atone for, no matter how much he wishes he could. Of course, this was before he wakes up in the past - 2014, to be exact, after the Olympics when Shane is being ghosted by ‘Boston Lily’. Hayden knows that Boston Lily does not exist. Shane does not know that Hayden knows this. Hayden is determined that he will be a better ally this time around - and, in the name of this purpose, decides that he needs to try his hand at being the best openly bisexual hockey player that the world could ask for. With his wife fully supportive of this and Cliff Marlow also… there, Hayden sets out to achieve the best friend of the year award.

or - Hayden Pike queerbaits his way into true love and a reformation of locker room culture. Is there an easier way he could have done this? Yeah, probably. In his defence, he thinks it's more authentic this way.

  7. Despite his size, Misha has always been known to be gentle. But, the moment you mess with his sisters, he'll show you how gentle of a giant he is. OR: Shane and Ilya's eldest son is overly protective of his sisters. (This is a one-shot spinoff of my original it's always been you. It may be read as a standalone but will be much better understood if the complete series is read first.) 4 Years Old Just as Shane and Ilya had predicted, Misha turned out to be a large toddler. It wasn’t surprising considering both of his dads were tall. He stood nearly a head taller than his peers at daycare and was extremely fast on his long legs when he wanted to. Despite this, it seemed that Misha didn’t like to take up very much space. His daycare teachers always remarked that Misha liked to keep to himself, preferring to do activities by himself over group activities. This wasn’t a huge surprise to either of them as Misha was a little man of few words, but once he started talking, there was no stopping him. He would have these bursts of energy where his mouth was powered by a motor and he would go on and on. Shane lived for these moments. Sitting on the couch together, Shane sank deeper into the cushions as Misha sprawled out beside him. Even though he had just woken up minutes earlier, Misha traced shapes along Shane’s large stomach and kicked his legs as he expressed his excitement: “hello baby. Is me, your big brother. I so excited for you to come. Daddy says will be long time before I meet you. Can you please come soon?” “Hopefully not too soon, Malyshka,” Shane huffed out a laugh. He still had one more month to go before baby girl was coming. “Okay, not too soon, baby. But still soon. Papa and Daddy say I was big baby so it was ouchie for Daddy when I camed out. Please don’t make Daddy ouchie. He is very good daddy so I don’ want him to hurt.” Shane’s heart soared as he listened to his baby talk. He really did try his best to take care of Misha to the best of his ability, so it was beyond nice to hear that he was doing okay. Gently, Shane ran his hands through Misha’s soft, dark chestnut curls. “I show you how good Daddy and Papa are. I show you all of my toys and books. We read together at night for story time. Maybe I take you to school and show you to everyone in my class for show and tell. They will be so-uhh Daddy what do I say for when people want what I has?” Shane pressed his lips together to not show how overly emotional he was getting. “I think the best word to use here is ‘jealous.’” “Yeah, jealous. Everyone in my class will be so jealous that I has baby sister. I no share you with them, but I share everything I has with you, baby.” “That’s so nice of you, Misha.” Shane stopped trying to hide his emotions so tears ran down his face. There was no point in trying anyways. He was heavily pregnant and his baby already loved his sister so much. Suddenly, Misha crawled to his feet and held both sides of Shane’s face with his warm little hands. “Don’t cry, Daddy. I sorry. I didn’t want to make you cry.” “It’s okay, Daddy is not sad. These are happy tears.” Misha immediately peppered Shane’s face with several kisses just as he’d seen his papa do multiple times. He left little splotches of his saliva over Shane’s face but Shane didn’t mind it at all. His baby boy already knew so much about love and kindness at such a young age that he didn’t know what to do with himself. “Uh-oh, someone is trying to steal Daddy away from me,” Ilya’s groggy voice came from behind them. Ilya came into the living room only wearing his boxers, leaving his body out on display for Shane. It wasn’t fair to Shane that his fiancé looked like a grecian statue even straight out of bed. Because they had a toddler and a baby on the way, Shane couldn’t do half of the things he wanted to do with Ilya anymore, but it was a bitter price that he was more than willing to pay. “Daddy crying so I make him happy,” Misha replied, still holding onto Shane’s face. “Happy tears, Ilya,” Shane immediately supplemented. “Our malyshka is just being way too sweet.” Just as Ilya tried to pick Misha up to give him his morning hug, Misha let out a small snarl. “I wanna stay with Daddy. I have to stay with him and sis.” “Why is that?” Ilya laughed, surprised at his son’s actions. “I protect,” Misha said with the most determined face that Shane had ever seen him make. “Protect us from what, Malyshka?” Shane asked. “Everything.” “Okay then. You protect your daddy and sister while I go start making breakfast.” Shane sat on the sofa for several more minutes, listening to Misha’s fantasies of being a big brother. He was utterly fixated on protecting his sister until Misha decided that Papa’s eggs and bacon sounded more important. ~~~ Marina Yuna Hollander-Rozanov came into the world at thirty-five weeks, far earlier than anyone could have predicted. According to Dr. Patel, sometimes babies naturally came early and it seemed like Shane didn’t have any conditions that could have caused it. Born at five pounds and five ounces, Mari was immediately admitted into the NICU so that she could be treated for her respiratory issues and jaundice. If Shane and Ilya weren’t already broken hearted enough, the moment they saw Misha’s crumple up upon seeing their hospital room void of their sister sealed the deal for them. Ilya had never seen his son make such a sorrowful face before. Even when Misha’s favourite

  10. Shane tries not to be disappointed in the way the whole thing has worked out. Because the thing about Rozanov is that his existence is infuriating. And he is so much fun to play against. Shane had almost liked the thought of having a rival and, had the lottery gone a little differently, he and Rozanov would have been drafted to the same division and really delivered on that possibility. They could have really enjoyed it.

As it stands, one of them is going to the southernmost team in the league, and the other is going all the way up North.

The draft lottery goes a little differently and suddenly there is no rivalry, no joint CCM campaign, and nothing between Shane and Ilya but a charged encounter in a hotel gym and 4,000 kilometres of distance.

Shane Hollander is eighteen, second overall draft pick, and quietly, a father. He's learned to carry both versions of himself with practiced ease. Then there's Ilya Rozanov: first overall, unbothered, and already taking up more space in Shane's head than he has any right to. Their rivalry is the story everyone wants to tell. Shane is starting to suspect the real one is something else entirely.

  13. J.J.’s eyes settled across the parking lot, where Shane had hung up the phone but was still crouched, his silhouette dark, head down, hands at the back of his neck. Fatigued, trying to make himself smaller, hide how exposed he clearly felt. Because he and Roz were a thing. Not a one way thing but an actual… thing. Shit.
J.J. hated Florida. The humidity fucked up his skin, and they had those giant snakes that weren’t even supposed to be there but some idiot Florida men had set them free and the swamps there were so fucked that they thrived. J.J. set his jaw, determined, before he responded. “Tell Jackie to get three tickets.” He reached into his bag and confirmed his passport was there. “It will be harder for Coach to punish all of his captains. I’m going with you.”
    He nodded his head definitively.
    Hayden nodded back.

Shane makes some changes to protect his privacy. People notice. *5+1 of Shane establishing his boundaries. AU where Shane and Ilya were never caught at the cottage. Hayden Hayden frowned as the door beeped angrily at him and flashed red. 1919, he was sure of it. He’d typed in that code hundreds of times since Shane’s first official year as a Metro when he’d bought the condo and had him over to watch hockey and chirp at the television with him. He knew the code to Shane’ s place like the back of his hand. He must have typed it in too fast, too lazily. It wouldn’t be the first time. Hayden typed it in again, frowning when it beeped and flashed at him again. Hayden knocked on the door instead, waiting for Shane to answer. He relaxed a little when Shane answered, his damp from a recent shower, dressed in baggy sweatpants and black hoodie that looked fleecy and warm. “Hey Hayd,” he greeted, stepping aside to let Hayden pass. Hayden returned the greeting and took off his shoes before he passed the kale chips he brought to Shane. “For you. All dressed for me,” Hayden smiled. “Did you change your code?” Shane led the way into the kitchen, humming. “Yeah, sorry, remind me to text you the new one.” Hayden watched as Shane tipped the bags into two separate bowls, letting him grab the drinks and meet him on the couch. They switched cans and bowls and sat and watched the teams warm up for the Florida vs Toronto game. “Barrett’s a fucking mess,” Hayden said, watching him skate laps. “Tell me about it,” Shane agreed, cracking his can of ginger ale. “Did you see that hit he took from Bennett last week?” “Fuck, yeah,” Hayden remembered. Bennett had cleared across the rink in about three seconds flat to smash Barrett into the boards. Even through the television, Hayden had been able to see the glass shake and Barrett’s head bobble in shock. “I bet it’s his shoulder,” Shane said. Hayden turned to ask him how he knew, but Shane was looking down at his phone and smiling. Hayden knew that smile. “How’s Boston Lily?” he asked. Shane locked his phone and tucked it under his thigh as he reached for his kale chips. “Fine.” “Are you guys..” Hayden trailed off. Shane looked at him with a raised eyebrow, his face blank. “Are we..?” “Like, exclusive? It’s been ages,” Hayden tried. Shane just looked at he television. Hayden could see him twitch, and realised he could hear the repeat buzzing of his phone, sandwiched between his leg and the couch cushion. “Is she sending you like thirty text in a row? Jackie does that,” Hayden laughed. Shane loosened up just a little and nodded. “Yeah. I don’t get why she doesn’t just send one long one.” “I know!” Hayden smiled, thrilled that Shane was sharing something about his mystery girl. “It’s like she has to narrate every thought as she has it.” “Yeah,” Shane agreed. “I’ll still be replying to the first message and ten more come through. And by then, she’s already moved on from the first thing.” “Women,” Hayden lamented. Shane's posture tightened just a little, and Hayden kicked himself. He had been doing so well – Shane had shared something, even if it was the most stereotypical thing about an annoying girlfriend that every man could have said. For Shane, it was huge. Hayden looked at Shane, and for the first time in a while, he was struck by how young he looked. Sure, at twenty six, Hayden already had the twins and one on the way, but Shane had always seem sort of delayed in having a personal life to make room for hockey. It was nice to see him splayed out on his sofa, chips in his hand, talking about a girl as he chewed on the string of his hoodie. “So you guys talk about, like, regular things?” Hayden asked, doing his best to sound nonchalant and like he didn’t care. Shane shifted on the couch a little next to him. “Yeah. I mean, we’re friends, so. We talk.” Hayden nodded to himself. Friends. He could work with that. “That’s cool,” Hayden said, grabbing more chips for himself. “I mean, Jackie’s my best friend, so, I get it.” It might have been too much, but when Hayden snuck a look at Shane out of the corner of his eye, he could see that Shane was doing his best not to smile. Hayden was happy he had Lily, he really was. He wasn’t even a little bit heartbroken that Shane talked to her more than he talked to him.

But you’re supposed to challenge yourself!” Hayden waves a hand to gesture across the large bookstore they’re in, “Find something new!” Shane glares at Hayden before shifting his focus to the various signs displaying different genres. “Fine.
