Shane tries not to be disappointed in the way the whole thing has worked out. Because the thing about Rozanov is that his existence is infuriating. And he is so much fun to play against. Shane had almost liked the thought of having a rival and, had the lottery gone a little differently, he and Rozanov would have been drafted to the same division and really delivered on that possibility. They could have really enjoyed it.
As it stands, one of them is going to the southernmost team in the league, and the other is going all the way up North.
Or-
The draft lottery goes a little differently and suddenly there is no rivalry, no joint CCM campaign, and nothing between Shane and Ilya but a charged encounter in a hotel gym and 4,000 kilometres of distance.
A lot of things are different, and some others are too fated to be ruined by something as immaterial as luck.

Shane was born before him so, technically, Rozanov has never known a life without Shane Hollander, which he will definitely lord over him whenever he’d get the chance to. His jersey number is 81. He’s a center like Shane. He’s the captain of the Boston Raiders. He’s a Gemini, though Shane has no idea how that affects him, if it has any bearing on his personality at all. Shane thinks there’s none because Rozanov is an asshole regardless, but all the tabloids insist that there is. He’s six foot three; only an inch taller than Shane. He’s a boy. There’s this thing that he does where he rubs his nose whenever he’s lying. It’s a pretty easy tell, and Rozanov is not a very good liar. He’s a boy, a boy, a boy.
Sometimes, he wishes Rozanov was a girl instead.

“Fuck it,” He mutters in Russian before just pressing his thumb down onto the phone next to Hollander’s contact. Ilya puts it onto speaker, listening to just up to the first half of the second ring before pressing the big red button, not letting it go on any longer. Fuck. He drops his phone and presses the palms of both of his hands to his eyes, trying to stabilize himself. Ring. His heart practically jumps out of his chest when he hears the sound coming from his phone. He looks down at where it’s sitting on the bed, the screen reads “Jane." Fuck. Out of panic, Ilya declines the call but quickly makes his way to his messages app, finding Hollander’s contact and typing out a quick few messages back to back. Ilya: did not mean to call. Ilya: was accident Ilya: no need for call back Ilya takes a deep breath and sets his phone back down only to be met with an immediate response from Hollander. * OR, 5 times Ilya had a nightmare & called Shane + the 1 time Shane was there to comfort him in person
