  1. Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.

Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.

His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.

But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"

By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.

But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…

    Shane says yes.

And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.

  2. “What were you doing in between one and four?”

Ilya clenches his jaw. He says nothing. Clearly, she smells blood.

“Mister Rozanov,” she leans forward, grabbing the desk as she enunciates, “what were you doing between one and four in the morning?”

Fucking Shane Hollander for the last time, it seems.

Why does the police of this shitty small town care?

    Or

After an exhibition game in a small town, the Montreal Metros and the Boston Raiders find themselves trapped in a hotel by a dangerous snow storm. Perfect for two hockey players sneaking around to hook up, right? But when a violent crime is committed in the hotel, everyone in both teams becomes a suspect. And there is nowhere to go.

  3. Shane is tempted to blame Hayden. Hayden had mentioned Boston Lily, poking and prodding Shane for details. Shane had done his best impression of an oyster. To keep his mouth shut and deny that secret hope that the grain of sand stuck on the roof of his oyster-mouth that is his and Rozanov’s situationship might turn into a pearl. A relationship. Fuck.

Shane, tired of Hayden’s questions, agreed to head out to the bar with the team. Mistake two. As it turned out, Hayden hadn’t given up. He’d waited until Shane’s anxiety about fitting in found him nursing a beer. It went to his head like bubbles in a fresh popped bottle of champagne. A bottle of champagne that Shane shook too hard, annoyed by the endless questions, and, well, the cork blew. However, instead of a cork, “I’m gay” shot out of Shane’s mouth. It changed everything as much as he feared it would.

  4. Shane Hollander has spent his whole career being told he and Ilya Rozanov hate each other. He's inclined to agree, right up until a hit in his rookie season puts him in a hospital bed and eleven years of a life he never had unspool behind his eyes: secret hotel rooms, a wedding, kids, a fight that nearly ended them, a crash that brought them back. He wakes up to a body that aches for a husband who was never real, and a rival standing at the end of his bed who has no idea what he means to him.
Or: Shane wakes up from a coma grieving a marriage that never happened, and decides the only way through it is to go build the real thing from scratch.

  6. Later, he’ll blame it all on a momentary lapse of judgement.

He’ll blame it on the loneliness maybe—on the fact that, despite never having been physically closer to Shane this consistently in his entire life—that despite regularly getting dinner with Shane’s parents—that despite finally having found what he’d spend his entire life searching for he’s also, somehow, never felt more alone.

He’ll blame it on Cliff not texting him back since he’d signed with Ottawa. He’ll blame it on Sveta, face pulled into a perpetual frown during every facetime call.

Or maybe he’ll blame it on Anya—sweet, beautiful Anya—who’d been just a little too cute not to share.

  7. Hollander watched him through the screen, face flushed and dark eyes half-lidded, heavy from the powerful orgasm that had just rocked him on the other side of the country. “I guess I won’t see you until next season, then.”

Ilya snorted, dropping the towel onto the floor. “I don’t have seasons. At least not the same ones you do.”

    ----

Ilya didn't regret leaving hockey behind. His life was his own now, inconsistent, frustrating, and difficult as it was.

His fascination with Shane Hollander, then, was just that—a fascination, a curiosity about the world that could have been, a glimpse of the life that he might have had. But fascination could grow, when there was somewhere to take root.

    Shane Hollander was a garden.

  8. In 2003, Shane Hollander is assigned a PenPal, and gains a friend. A friend who smokes, calls him boring, and gives him ridiculous nicknames.

Across the world, Ilya Rozanov practices his English with a curious Canadian boy whose name he can't fucking remember.

Or, before they were Canada's Shane Hollander and Russia's Ilya Rozanov, they were Cat and Elijah. Shane has no reason to suspect his childhood PenPal is his hockey rival, and Ilya has never even considered that the man he's falling for is also the boy he already fell in love with through letters and postcards.

  9. Ilya wakes up in the early afternoon, in his underwear, with a dry mouth, a crick in his neck, and loud, incessant banging. It takes him longer than he is proud to admit to realize that it’s coming from his front door. He gets up and immediately regrets it. His living room is a mess and the light coming in from the window makes him wince. He does not want to clean today. What he had wanted was a rare, quiet night. Maybe text Hollander to rile him up after his loss the day before. Instead, Marly insisted on coming home with him after his girlfriend dumped him, so he could drown his sorrows. He remembers making some questionable choices after that, and if the state of the house is any indication, he is right.

Oh, that fucker. What did he forget here?

“Marly, you fucking asshole, I swear if you don’t stop—” Fuck. His head. How much did he drink last night? “Couldn’t you wait until practice tomorrow to get—” He opens the door. A small child is looking up at him.

  13. Ilya avoids skin contact with known sentinels as much as he can. It’s unlikely for compatibility to be high enough for a physical reaction. Ilya’s already managed to be a difficult guide. He can’t risk exposing his secret for the sake of camaraderie. But Hollander is pretty, and Ilya is not thinking about him being a sentinel, or the danger, or the pull he’s felt since he laid eyes on Hollander in person. He’s just thinking that he wants to touch him.

    So he does.

And the touch sparks, bright and instant.

  16. Shane is hiding something that could end his career. Ilya is the kind of person who doesn’t stop until he finds it. What starts as rivalry turns into fixation. Because something about Shane doesn’t make sense, his control, his scent, the way he reacts. And Ilya doesn’t like unsolved patterns. He likes breaking them open. Even if it breaks Shane with it. Not instinct. Not luck. Not being an alpha. Control. So when he watches Shane play, he sees it immediately, something precise, something careful, something just out of reach. Something hidden. Flight 771 shouldn't have been any different than any of the hundreds of other flights that Shane has taken over the course of his career, aside from the fact that it was taking him towards his lifelong dream—towards the Olympics.

  20. At some point between getting home and finding the mess in the kitchen, Shane calls the police and his parents in quick succession.

He doesn’t remember those phone calls at all. Blocked them from his memory the second they were over—doesn’t know what he said, what his mother replied—what the operator on the other end of the line asked him.

The only proof he has of ever placing the calls is the record of them in his phone—neatly stacked over-on-another. 911 right below Mom.

Below that, a series of phone calls to Ilya (husband), some barely even twenty seconds long, just short little I love you’s and what juice did you say you wanted from the store’s. Shane actually has to scroll for a while before he finds any other number in his call log.

If Shane were to add all of that data into an excel sheet he’d have proof that Ilya took up about 90% of his call records and yet it doesn’t feel like enough.
