  1. Later, he’ll blame it all on a momentary lapse of judgement.

He’ll blame it on the loneliness maybe—on the fact that, despite never having been physically closer to Shane this consistently in his entire life—that despite regularly getting dinner with Shane’s parents—that despite finally having found what he’d spend his entire life searching for he’s also, somehow, never felt more alone.

He’ll blame it on Cliff not texting him back since he’d signed with Ottawa. He’ll blame it on Sveta, face pulled into a perpetual frown during every facetime call.

Or maybe he’ll blame it on Anya—sweet, beautiful Anya—who’d been just a little too cute not to share.

  2. Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.

But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.

  3. At some point between getting home and finding the mess in the kitchen, Shane calls the police and his parents in quick succession.

He doesn’t remember those phone calls at all. Blocked them from his memory the second they were over—doesn’t know what he said, what his mother replied—what the operator on the other end of the line asked him.

The only proof he has of ever placing the calls is the record of them in his phone—neatly stacked over-on-another. 911 right below Mom.

Below that, a series of phone calls to Ilya (husband), some barely even twenty seconds long, just short little I love you’s and what juice did you say you wanted from the store’s. Shane actually has to scroll for a while before he finds any other number in his call log.

If Shane were to add all of that data into an excel sheet he’d have proof that Ilya took up about 90% of his call records and yet it doesn’t feel like enough.

  4. “Oh,” Hollander says. Landry is still just kind of staring at the photos, face unreadable, but he must see something in her expression, because he reaches across the table to take her left hand into his—squeezes, covers it with his other hand as well. “I don’t think—well, her parents got married in front of this little pond area so—"

Hollander turns to look at her. Landry is still staring at the flower arches: the baby breath, the forget-me-nots, the heaps and heaps of roses sharing her name. Sveta throws a questioning glance Ilya’s way, her perfectly sculptured eyebrows making a valid effort to fly off her face. Ilya shrugs.

And then Rose Landry bursts into heaving sobs.
