David gets diagnosed with prostate cancer a few months before Shane turns forty.

“It’s nothing for you to worry about,” he says, right before he drops the news. Family dinner: pasta with vodka sauce, roasted broccoli, a tower of garlic bread stacked just as high as ever, even though Ilya, retired now, no longer has the appetite he once had. Usually, he still manages to put most of it away, even if it means he ends up groaning on the coach afterwards, begging Shane to rub his belly. Shane rolls his eyes, but he always does it, if only for the happy little sighs Ilya makes, like a fat house cat.

Or: there's a cancer diagnosis, then a cancer scare, and Shane contemplates retirement.

  2. October 31st. It was after ten p.m., so the streetlamps and other cars’ headlights glowed eerie in the pounding rain on Route 342 toward Montreal. Not that the sky would have been any brighter at six, these days. That was what time did to you: pickpocketed summer sun and warmth until, before you knew it, you were forty-two and your coach was playing you on the second line more and more.

    --

Shane Hollander, age 42, crashes his car on a stormy Halloween night and accepts a ride from a handsome stranger on a motorbike.

This is a spooky Halloween story, but also a story about getting older, the burden of perfection and the loneliness of the closet.

  3. At some point between getting home and finding the mess in the kitchen, Shane calls the police and his parents in quick succession.

He doesn’t remember those phone calls at all. Blocked them from his memory the second they were over—doesn’t know what he said, what his mother replied—what the operator on the other end of the line asked him.

The only proof he has of ever placing the calls is the record of them in his phone—neatly stacked over-on-another. 911 right below Mom.

Below that, a series of phone calls to Ilya (husband), some barely even twenty seconds long, just short little I love you’s and what juice did you say you wanted from the store’s. Shane actually has to scroll for a while before he finds any other number in his call log.

If Shane were to add all of that data into an excel sheet he’d have proof that Ilya took up about 90% of his call records and yet it doesn’t feel like enough.

  5. It happens six months after their wedding.

Scott has never been happier in his entire life. Things were amazing for a little while there, so picture-perfect in all areas of his life that it felt almost too good to be true. Too easy. The kind of happiness where you wake up every day asking yourself if it’s actually real, if you can really have this, just like that.

    Turns out you can’t.

  6. Shane’s thoughts feel dangerous. Or - not dangerous, exactly, but really fucking scary. The kind of thoughts that used to have him bolting upright in the middle of the night, his skin drenched with cold sweat at the mere prospect of such a thing.

But now…now Shane thinks it’s time.

“I think this is my last season,” he whispers, voice faltering over the words he’s never said aloud before.

  7. “Shane Hollander’s having a big gay wedding.”
Ilya’s ball rocketed sideways into the woods with a crack like a rifle shot; somewhere in the trees, a goose honked in outrage.
    “Jesus Christ,” Tyler said.
“Wow,” Marly said. “That was…what the fuck was that, Roz?”
Ilya was gripping the club so hard his knuckles had gone white. “Bad swing.”
“That wasn’t a bad swing, that was like a physics-defying swing. I didn’t know you could make a ball go in that direction. You okay?”
“Fine.” Hollander was getting married. Getting gay married. Who the fuck was Hollander marrying? He wasn’t even… Ilya cleared his throat, shoved his biggest club back in the bag, noted distantly that his hands were shaking. “Hollander is gay?”

  8. Today something is different. Ilya feels off balance at morning skate. He wobbles, but he doesn’t fall, because Shane is there, his hands on Ilya’s waist, holding fistfuls of his jersey, his legs spread wide to brace Ilya on the ice. Ilya almost breaks the rules. Almost lies. But Shane just looks at him, worried even though he doesn’t want to say so, and Ilya can’t. “Something is wrong,” he says. “Okay,” Shane nods. “Let’s figure it out.”

  10. They were always competing, in a league of their own, but always together. Every conversation they'd had about their future involved their careers ending the way they'd started. Together. Ilya had been with the Ottawa Centaurs for over eight years. He had turned a dying franchise into a team to be reckoned with. The addition of his husband only further cemented Ottawa's place in the league. But as the crowds grew bigger, and the team's points got higher, Ilya felt the flame within him dwindle. -- OR -- Ilya retires, featuring his final game and jersey #81 retirement ceremony.

  11. “Do you remember learning to skate?” he asks Ilya. Ilya shakes his head. “My mother started teaching me very young. As soon as I could walk, I think.” “Show off. I was four. I can remember it.” “Now who is show off?” Shane laughs. “I’m trying to say…it’s going to be weird, isn’t it? Not…doing this anymore.”

  12. Shane Hollander retires after one last game in Montreal. What follows is a night of empty locker rooms, long highways, and the slow realization that letting go of hockey doesn’t mean letting go of himself…especially when Ilya Rozanov is there to remind him of everything they’ve already won. Update: I added an epilogue of sorts from Ilya’s POV (which caused the rating change). I hope you enjoy!

  13. They lapse back into a comfortable silence. Shane looks at Ilya as he is and thinks about Ilya as he was at seventeen, smoking in the back of a Saskatchewan parking lot. The image is almost unbearably tender for Shane, where his own seventeen year old thrill at seeing Ilya Rozanov meets all the things Shane knows about that lonely boy now. Shane thinks: Do you love number 81 more than you love this man? "Hey," Ilya says, brushing his knuckles over Shane's cheek. "Whatever I do, I will be there when you come home." Ilya decides to retire. Shane is very normal about it.
