  1. Shane Hollander has spent his whole career being told he and Ilya Rozanov hate each other. He's inclined to agree, right up until a hit in his rookie season puts him in a hospital bed and eleven years of a life he never had unspool behind his eyes: secret hotel rooms, a wedding, kids, a fight that nearly ended them, a crash that brought them back. He wakes up to a body that aches for a husband who was never real, and a rival standing at the end of his bed who has no idea what he means to him.
Or: Shane wakes up from a coma grieving a marriage that never happened, and decides the only way through it is to go build the real thing from scratch.

  3. Shane and Ilya are coming out this summer. First they need to convince the fans that being competitive doesn’t depend on hating each other at all, actually. With a little [a lot] of help from Harris Drover, it’s all going according to plan. [Well, except Ilya keeps saying that being public friends means they're now officially friends with benefits. Shane did not buy Ilya a ring to be demoted to friends with benefits.]
    -----
The camera tracks Shane and Ilya as they race back up the ice. They cross the finish line in a blur of speed and round on Harris.

“I don’t-,” Harris says, “It was so tight. Maybe we call it a draw?”

Ilya throws his arms up. “[Beep], is not a f-[beep]-ing draw, is-”

“Harris, what the [beep]?” Shane shouts, eyes wide. “What do-”

The two of them abruptly fall silent.

    “Um, sorry, sorry.” Ilya shrugs.

Shane flushes. “Sorry, yeah, sorry Harris.”

“So I’m guessing,” says Harris, “you want a re-do?”

“Cannot be a tie,” Ilya says at the same time Shane says, “draws aren’t a real thing.”

Harris can’t help it. He bursts out laughing.

  7. “Shit,” Hunter said, eyes wide. He shot a glance up and down the hallway and held up his hands in the universal sign of “calm down.”
“I can pretend I didn’t see anything,” he said quickly.
“There’s nothing-“ But Shane was losing the ability to speak. His throat was closing up, his vision darkening, his heart feeling like it was being squeezed by barb wire.

What if Scott Hunter caught Shane sneaking out of Ilya's room? What if this change meant Shane had someone to talk to, and then the number of people in his corner kept expanding?

Shane had not made Ilya promise to be on his best behavior, and he regretted that immediately as he watched Ilya shake J.J.'s hand with an expression of exaggerated confusion.

“You— fuck— you said I could come,” Shane says, trying to keep the accusatory note out of his voice.

“Mhm. When you say my name, yes?”

“I did!” Shane says, just a hint of a whine in his tone now. Rozanov smirks at him.
