Hollander watched him through the screen, face flushed and dark eyes half-lidded, heavy from the powerful orgasm that had just rocked him on the other side of the country. “I guess I won’t see you until next season, then.”
Ilya snorted, dropping the towel onto the floor. “I don’t have seasons. At least not the same ones you do.”
----
Ilya didn't regret leaving hockey behind. His life was his own now, inconsistent, frustrating, and difficult as it was.
His fascination with Shane Hollander, then, was just that—a fascination, a curiosity about the world that could have been, a glimpse of the life that he might have had. But fascination could grow, when there was somewhere to take root.
Shane Hollander was a garden.

At twenty-one, Ilya Rozanov is the Soviet Union’s most perfect weapon, a soldier of the Red Machine who has spent three years locked in a silent, jagged war on the ice with Canada’s golden boy, Shane Hollander.
When the Montreal Metros claim him as a "wasted" mid-round draft pick, the rivalry transforms from a professional grudge into a desperate lifeline. On the final night of the 1988 Calgary Olympics, he risks everything, his family, his career, and his safety, to start a new life in the West. Forced into a high-stakes billet under the roof of his bitter professional rival, Ilya must navigate a world where freedom feels like a new kind of prison.
As Ilya struggles to adapt, the crumbling Soviet empire reaches across the ocean, searching for leverage to help pull him back.
OR: What if Ilya fled Russia in 1988 to play for the Montreal Metros?

Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is. On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone. Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.

“What is there to talk about?” “What’s there to talk about?!” Hollander scoffed, shaking his head. “You’re playing for my fucking team!” “I know.” “Why did you have to go and get traded?! You realise we’re going to have to see each other every day from now on, and play together, and-” “Yes,” Ilya interrupted. He didn’t want to know how long Hollander’s list was. “I know.” Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?” “Right.” “And we can’t- can’t hook up anymore.” ~ OR: Ilya gets traded to Montreal in October 2014. He's lonely, and angry, and he misses Boston. He doesn't know if it helps that Hollander is there or not. title from Buckle by Florence and the Machine

"Technically, technically, this was a good thing!
Robbie kept telling himself, and Jenny, more importantly Jenny, that this was a good thing.
Their kid wasn’t color-blind like Robbie and Jenny’s father and brothers! This was good!
This was fine! It was totally fine!
So his kid wasn’t his, so what?
Fuck, no!
Fuck that!"
