Hollander watched him through the screen, face flushed and dark eyes half-lidded, heavy from the powerful orgasm that had just rocked him on the other side of the country. “I guess I won’t see you until next season, then.”
Ilya snorted, dropping the towel onto the floor. “I don’t have seasons. At least not the same ones you do.”
----
Ilya didn't regret leaving hockey behind. His life was his own now, inconsistent, frustrating, and difficult as it was.
His fascination with Shane Hollander, then, was just that—a fascination, a curiosity about the world that could have been, a glimpse of the life that he might have had. But fascination could grow, when there was somewhere to take root.
Shane Hollander was a garden.

Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-10-15
In 2003, Shane Hollander is assigned a PenPal, and gains a friend. A friend who smokes, calls him boring, and gives him ridiculous nicknames.
Across the world, Ilya Rozanov practices his English with a curious Canadian boy whose name he can't fucking remember.
Or, before they were Canada's Shane Hollander and Russia's Ilya Rozanov, they were Cat and Elijah. Shane has no reason to suspect his childhood PenPal is his hockey rival, and Ilya has never even considered that the man he's falling for is also the boy he already fell in love with through letters and postcards.

Shane Hollander is eighteen, second overall draft pick, and quietly, a father. He's learned to carry both versions of himself with practiced ease. Then there's Ilya Rozanov: first overall, unbothered, and already taking up more space in Shane's head than he has any right to. Their rivalry is the story everyone wants to tell. Shane is starting to suspect the real one is something else entirely.

“Honestly, dude, you’re fucking handling this like a champ.”
He’s not. He’s handling it the way he has to, the only way there is to handle it. “Well, I am champ, so.”
Marlow chuckles.
He sounds like he’s about to say something else heartfelt and misinformed, so Ilya flicks on the radio.

The Queerest Team in the NHL by Anonymous
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-02-01
“Man, are we the gayest team in the NHL or what?” Tanner Dillon joked.
“Ilya is bisexual,” Wyatt Hayes reminded him. Ilya raised his beer at Wyatt in thanks.
“The queerest team in the NHL,” Dillon corrected with barely a beat.
“We must be,” Shane said slowly, expression scrunched up as he seemed to seriously ponder the question. “There might be some teams with a closeted player, or maybe two, but five? Statistically speaking, that’s highly improbable.”
or
Luca Haas comes out to the team. Thank goodness queer sherpas Ilya, Shane, and Troy are there to guide him. And the Centaurs are supportive, obviously. Maybe too supportive.

Shane Hollander meets Ilya Rozanov when he is four years old and he cannot be any more unimpressed by this turn of events.
Thirteen years later, like the most cliché heartbreak in the making, they are best friends and Shane is thoroughly, utterly in love with him.
*
Ilya Rozanov's life has been a study in leaving things behind and one way or another he learned to deal with it.
One exception is Shane Hollander who came along thirteen years ago, settled in all too cozy, and ensured himself as the one thing Ilya can't ever leave.
