Shane Hollander has spent his whole career being told he and Ilya Rozanov hate each other. He's inclined to agree, right up until a hit in his rookie season puts him in a hospital bed and eleven years of a life he never had unspool behind his eyes: secret hotel rooms, a wedding, kids, a fight that nearly ended them, a crash that brought them back. He wakes up to a body that aches for a husband who was never real, and a rival standing at the end of his bed who has no idea what he means to him.
Or: Shane wakes up from a coma grieving a marriage that never happened, and decides the only way through it is to go build the real thing from scratch.

In another timeline, Shane and Ilya hook up in Room 1410, Ilya slips out unnoticed, and they spend the next seven years trapped in the situationship from hell we all know and love.

In this one, Yuna Hollander walks in just as Ilya goes to leave and—through the combined power of misunderstanding, miscommunication, and a frankly alarming lack of follow-up—Shane and Ilya start dating in 2010.

Given the chance to grow up with rather than against each other, Shane and Ilya build a life thats steadier, safer, and far less frightening than their canon. Their rivalry fizzles before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced by hockey’s most beloved “bromance", and in 2015, they find the courage to do the one thing their canon counterparts never got to do: tell the NHL and the world.

There is just one problem: No one believes them.

OR: Despite Shane and Ilya being out for two years, Scott Hunter is still considered the first openly gay player in the NHL, much to Ilya’s indignation.

The morning after the draft, Ilya stared at the headline for far too long. At Hollander’s beaming smile, at his young, innocent happiness, at the terrible hair and big brown eyes and the way he looked in the Bear jersey. Ilya’s colors. Ilya felt a rush of possessiveness that wasn’t at all appropriate. Hollander was so… edible. Ilya wanted to unhinge his jaw like a python and swallow him down.

He closed his eyes. That wasn’t appropriate. That wasn’t at all appropriate. Hollander was Ilya’s rookie and he was soon to be billeting him. There will be no eating. No nibbling, no gnawing, no gobbling, no swallowing.

He switched to his texts and tapped the number Keppler had sent him.

“Hello?” asked Hollander’s tentative voice. Oh, Ilya would not survive this.

“Hi,” Ilya said, brightly. “Shane Hollander?”

“Oh,” Hollander said. “Are you… Ilya Rozanov?”

What about just a tiny nibble? One little nibble on one of those cute cheeks?

The Winner's Room would be a mind fuck all on its own. It's just that Shane is also trying to ignore the fact that he's gay, a bottom, and submissive. All of the things he isn't suppose to be. It would be easier if Shane didn't score a lot of game winning goals, but that wasn't the kind of thing he could just stop doing. He would really like it if the Player's Association had provided the social rules of the Winner's Room along with all of the technical ones. Like everything else Shane has to figure out how to make himself fit into what is expected of him.

He learns a lot from his first three Forfeits.
