Shane texts, “Hi! Are you free tonight? I know it’s soon but we’re leaving town tomorrow for a few days, and I’d love to see you.”

Ilya would have made fun of him for that message. Ilya would have just gotten a “come over.” Ilya would have responded “where is romance, Hollander?” and Shane would say, “I’m fucking starting without you.” And Ilya would be at his door in 20 minutes.

Shane doesn’t think that would work on Sveta.

Or: What if Svetlana were Rose Landry?

At some point between getting home and finding the mess in the kitchen, Shane calls the police and his parents in quick succession.

He doesn’t remember those phone calls at all. Blocked them from his memory the second they were over—doesn’t know what he said, what his mother replied—what the operator on the other end of the line asked him.

The only proof he has of ever placing the calls is the record of them in his phone—neatly stacked over-on-another. 911 right below Mom.

Below that, a series of phone calls to Ilya (husband), some barely even twenty seconds long, just short little I love you’s and what juice did you say you wanted from the store’s. Shane actually has to scroll for a while before he finds any other number in his call log.

If Shane were to add all of that data into an excel sheet he’d have proof that Ilya took up about 90% of his call records and yet it doesn’t feel like enough.

"Maybe," Irina said, "I will ask. Maybe, Shane and Ilyushenka would like to go on ice together? Hockey maybe, or only skating?"

"Shane would certainly prefer to play hockey," Yuna said, as Shane stepped into the room, his eyes going suddenly bright when she glanced at him as the word hockey left her mouth. Sometimes she thought it was like having a little puppy hearing the word walk.

"Hockey?" Shane asked, still standing in the doorway, his whole body vibrating a little, "I can have hockey?"

The Hollanders go on a trip to Russia in 1996 to attend a wedding, and Shane makes a friend. In 2008, he meets his friend again. Part of him knows it's his friend, sadly, that part is not his brain.

“Look it’s not that hard, just go be cool for a few hours and if you get stuck just ask yourself: WWHD–-what would Henry do?”

They used to swap places all the time as kids. At school, at the playground, at practice. For fun. It had been easy then—like a quick changing of jerseys between periods. That was before the invisible fork in the road that had inexplicably parted them in their teens. It's been over a decade since they’ve done this bit. And Shane doesn’t want to do it. Not because he can’t do it but because he is so, so tired of playing clean-up crew for Henry’s fuckups.

Shane hesitates, jaw tightening. Then he slowly exhales through his nose.
“Do you. Still have. The clip-ons.” Shane grits out.

Shane Hollander is nineteen and trying to get through one Hollywood party without being noticed. He gets noticed anyway, by the worst possible person. His last-minute Halloween costume is working too well. Ilya Rozanov, the rival he's never met but supposed to hate, takes one look and thinks Shane is a girl.
Shane doesn't correct him. He doesn't stop him from kissing Shane. And he accidentally gives him his real phone number. Oops.

Marlow’s eyebrows rose briefly. He’d known that Roz and Montreal Girl had that thing for A While now, but this didn’t seem to be a very casual ‘hooking up whenever we’re in the same city’.

A tinge of guilt sparked in him about invading his Captain’s privacy but then, Jane seemed really worried. And she’s important to Roz, evidently, so he would probably want her to know he’s okay, right?

    OR

Ilya gets injured during a game and Marlow follows him to the hospital. He texts a very worried Jane who promises she'll be there soon. The last person Marlow expected to show up in the waiting room is Shane Hollander.

There are many ways to support your favorite player. Attending their games, for instance. Buying their jersey. Or, if you're trying to keep a secret relationship under wraps, you could drive four hours in the opposite direction, wrap yourself in a dollar store blanket with eyeholes cut in it, and attempt to blend in with the locals. It's foolproof. Nothing could possibly go wrong. The internet would never figure it out.
