“Of course I’m not okay with this - he’s fucking hurting you Shane.” Yuna takes the opportunity to finally say it outright. She doesn’t hide the vitriol in her tone.
“Wha-” Shane’s eyes get wide. Something like comprehension crosses his face. His eyes dart down to the bruise on his wrist. “Oh.” If possible, his face gets redder still. Yuna frowns. “No, mom, he’s not- uh- hurting me. Like that.”
What? “Did somebody else give you that bruise then?” Yuna feels a bit hysterical. Has Rozanov Stockholm Syndromed her son?
“No,” Shane grits out, “it was, uh, Ilya. It was just. You know. Like. Um.”
And suddenly Yuna understands. She understands all too well. She understands more than she had ever wanted to about her son.

He wasn’t like Ilya, he didn’t find joy in pushing and prodding at the other team until one of them snapped and threw a punch. When a scrum did break out, he hardly ever joined the fray, preferring instead to focus on managing the refs and trying to get his team out of the fight with as few penalties as possible. Shane should be here right now, should be in Ilya’s house. Ilya should be teasing him about being picky while going through delivery options for food on his phone. Shane should be discovering that Ilya has ginger ale in the fridge and the protein bars Shane mentioned liking in an interview in his pantry. He should be making out with Shane on the couch, sneaking a hand into his pants, teasing him about whether they can beat the deliveryman and arrive before he does. Shane was supposed to spend the night tonight, the Montreal team not set to leave until tomorrow afternoon because of potential bad weather in the morning. Shane should be fed and showered and ready to curl up in bed with Ilya tonight.
But Shane is in a hospital.And Ilya is here.
He pulls up Jane in his phone again. He presses call.
“Hey, you’ve reached Shane Hollander-”
Ilya closes his eyes and lets Shane’s voice roll over him.

Dark eyes staring back at him. Akane didn’t have dark eyes. She had hazel eyes, brilliant, multifaceted gems that glimmered playfully in even the dimmest light.
That was Rozanov’s daemon. Of course it was.
Rozanov’s daemon was identical to Shane’s. The same body shape. The same small white diamond above the nose. The same deeper red blaze along the spine. But he still should’ve been able to tell it wasn’t Akane.

“Look,” Shane began, hitting the edge of the basin with the flat of his palm. “I don’t know if I did something to piss you off, or…or what, but you’re being fucking weird. The phonecall? And this? What is this?”
Before he’d even really processed Shane’s words, Ilya was standing directly in front of him, grabbing his lapels, pulling him closer. Then his shoulders sagged and their foreheads met. Ilya could feel Shane shift, moving away, but Ilya kept him still. It felt so good just to have Shane near again. “You would not believe me,” Ilya murmured.
Shane let his shoulders slump in acquiescence. He gave a little shrug. “I’m already having a tough time believing that you’re acting like this.” He laughed weakly, and Ilya envisioned what it would be like to tilt his head just slightly and press his lips to Shane’s. Would he reciprocate? Pull away? The latter. The latter. Obviously.
Or, after Ilya takes the girl from the club in Montreal back to his hotel room, he falls asleep wishing that he and Shane had never been anything at all, and wakes up to a world in which that’s true.

Luca Haas moves in with Ilya Rozanov for his rookie year and slowly gets adopted by Hollanov. Not even three months into their arrangement, Luca gets injured in a game against the Voyageurs. Shane is there to pick up the pieces while Ilya is busy fighting the guy that did it.
