“Ilyusha,” Vasilisa says. “We are keeping this up indoors also.”
“Is sun umbrella. For sun.”
“There are lights.”
Ilya looks at Shane over her head. He looks exhausted, thinner than Shane likes, and happier than Shane has ever seen him.
“You see what you did,” he says. “Tyranny, everywhere, and everywhere, enablers.”
Or
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a fox in possession of a good fur coat must be in want of a wolf.

It won’t technically kill you, if you hide your soul so far away from the world that even you can’t see it. It won’t kill you, but fuck, it will hurt.
(Shane always keeps his dæmon out of sight, pushing the limits of distance as much as humanly possible, until he can’t anymore. Until Ilya Rozanov says his name, and something breaks.)

“Jesus Christ,” Ollie whispers. “I’m going to pass out. Shane—look, she’s wearing a fur coat. A fur coat, Shane—”
Shane nods, every bit as shaky. The fox is, in fact, wearing a little capelet of real fur on top of her own already ridiculous red pelt: dark and glossy, sable probably, tied under her chest with a silk ribbon and fastened at the breastbone with a small gold clasp.

Nobody is prepared for the way Ilya and Vasilisa Rozanov intend to play professional hockey, least of all Shane and Oliver Hollander.

Shane glanced at his fox, Akane. Still between Rozanov’s legs.
Dark eyes staring back at him. Akane didn’t have dark eyes. She had hazel eyes, brilliant, multifaceted gems that glimmered playfully in even the dimmest light.
That was Rozanov’s daemon. Of course it was.
Rozanov’s daemon was identical to Shane’s. The same body shape. The same small white diamond above the nose. The same deeper red blaze along the spine. But he still should’ve been able to tell it wasn’t Akane.
Who can’t recognize their own daemon?

Shane and Ilya had mutually agreed to keep their whatever-they’re-doing out of Sochi. It was an easy decision to make: this was bigger than any MLH rivalry and definitely bigger than a few hotel hook-ups. There was no room for distractions, not with Olympic gold on the line. So it’d be really fucking great if their daemons could get on the same page and stop trying to cause an international fucking incident.

It’s not just that Ilya’s daemon is impressive. Like… a wolf. A fucking wolf. Yeah, Shane is impressed by that. It's that hockey players shouldn’t have daemons at all.
