Ilya had thought it was dumb, when Galina suggested it. A code word for when his mental health was bad—he and Shane didn’t even have a code word for sex, and Ilya was regularly tying Shane to the bed and slapping his ass until it was as red as a tomato.
“Is there a reason you’re calling me?” Shane asks now, voice echoey over the phone. “Or is this part of your strategy to win our argument?”
Ilya swallows hard. “Constantinople,” he says.

When The Universe Intervenes: Into The Bonerverse by Anonymous
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-05-29
[Edit]: I changed the title because the subtitle is too funny not to add.
The Centaurs win the cup and celebrate late into the night. In the morning, Shane wakes up in an alternate universe - one where he never got hard in the shower and he and Ilya never hooked up.
------------
And Shane, not for the first time, thinks even farther back. To that day in the showers after their CCM campaign shoot. Alone under the spray, and confronted with Ilya’s perfect body, Shane’s body reacted. And truthfully, he’s always been quick to react when it comes to Ilya.
But to think… if he could just control his dick, none of this would have happened.
This perfect life he’s living. Married to the man of his dreams. Living and playing in his hometown, with his parents only 10 minutes away. With his sweet puppy, Anya. Celebrating his fourth ever Stanley Cup win. All thanks to one wayward boner.
For a wild second, Shane thinks about saying that to Wyatt.
That’s how he knows he’s drunk.

Ilya knew, right from the very moment he met Shane Hollander, that he would never be good enough for him. He’d seemed so…pristine, when they first met. Untouched. And Ilya knew his unclean hands would only dirty him up. He’s always been selfish, though; his father used to tell him that. So it’s no surprise, really, that Shane has finally gotten tired of it. Of him, always needing more from Shane than he deserves - always begging for more than he has earned. Ilya would leave himself, too, if he could. (Or, five time Ilya thought Shane would leave, and one time he knew he wasn’t going anywhere.)

“You know why I got them, yes?” “I know why you think you got them.” “Is our anniversary.” “No, it’s not.” The sound of Shane’s stick blade hitting another puck reverberated through the otherwise empty rink. “I am the kind of guy who remembers those things,” Ilya leaned as close as he dared, snatching one of the pucks and taking a shot of his own before Shane could go again. He let out a pleased hum at himself as it sank into the upper left corner. “You’re fucking not. You’re the kinda guy who gets his roommate flowers to be an asshole, actually. You know, I’ve never met a single other person who’s ever done that.” Ilya gave an exaggerated pout, “You are being mean to me on our roommate anniversary.” “Are you going to do this every fucking year?” • • • • • • Ilya buys Shane flowers to celebrate the anniversary of them living together in their university apartment. Shane finds this a particularly asshole move from Ilya, considering they started living together in September and it's currently January. They spend most of the day arguing about it, until Shane finally comes clean about the deeper reason his roommate's "gift" has left him so off-kilter all day.

Shane was fourteen the first time a number felt like safety.
The nutritionist worked out of an office in Kanata, framed certificates, a calm voice, laminated charts with columns. She explained it simply: fuel in, output required, timing of each. She said it was a starting point.
Shane took notes in the margins the way he took notes on everything—completely, past what was required. Yuna had found the nutritionist herself, sat beside him, and took notes too.
Like mother, like son.

“You are my friend, Hayden, but he is the man I am going to spend to rest of my life with - he is the man that I love. I will choose him over you, every fucking time.” Over anything and everything, Shane would choose Ilya. Even over hockey, if it came to that. There’s no doubt in his mind, no question about it. Losing hockey would hurt, and Shane would grieve it, but it wouldn’t kill him. It would be an ache he could live with. Losing Ilya is not something that Shane could ever survive. They’re so tangled together - so intertwined - that to lose Ilya would be to lose himself.

Shane Hollander has a laundry list of problems at any given time, and being a vampire (while keeping it a secret) is pretty consistently at the top of the list. His top problem right now, though? How much he really wants to sink his teeth into Ilya Rozanov, in every possible way.

“We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”
Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.
“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”
Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.

Ilya is…he’s Shane’s entire heart. The air that he breathes, the reason for everything he does. None of it would matter without Ilya. This is the closest he’s ever come to losing him, and the thought of it - the possibility that everything they’ve been fighting for could just be lost - had struck Shane so acutely, so agonisingly.
He’d once thought that losing hockey was the worst thing that could ever happen to him. He knows, now, that isn’t true.

Oh no, Shane thought. Oh God. No. Ignoring his clammy palms, he scanned the tiny hotel room, wondering where he could even lay his bag. Then, after a breathtaking second, he forced his eyes to meet Rozanov’s. With a mischievous smirk, Rozanov was sitting casually on the only bed, arm draped over the pillows—including the pillow that Shane had to sleep on. And Rozanov’s muscular chest and arms were on full, shameless display. Shane might just die. “So,” Rozanov said, “you and me, we sleep together?” Or: Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov were stuck in the same hotel room in Saskatchewan after the International Prospect Cup ended—and there was only one bed.

Eventually, they have to talk about it.
The world resumes its spins. The sex runs out. They kiss until their lips are bruised and they make up for lost time in any way that they can, and Ilya only leaves the hotel room to get food for them both. It is the middle of the night and their heartbeats have returned to normal. The silence has finally sunk in.
Shane whispers, “Talk now?”
Ilya kisses him on the forehead. “Talk now.”

Shane and Ilya have been together--officially-- for two years, and it's been going relatively well despite all the itty-bitty bumps on the road. Having to date in secret is never 'light and breezy'. It's definitely not light and breezy when Shane's childhood best friend visits. It's okay at first, nudged shoulders and inside jokes Ilya didn't understand. The second the nudges got too intimate, when the jokes got too sexual is when he realized something was off. He stays quiet, plays along, tries his fucking hardest not to punch Nathan goddamn Hales square in his annoyingly handsome face. When Ilya does talk to Shane about it, admittedly in the worst way possible, a fight breaks out. regrettable word choices are made, and a door is shut. And it was all Nathan fucking Hales fault.

Right now, Ilya and Shane were running from the bullets that would probably catch up to them if they stopped. But Ilya wanted to stop running. He would take bullets to the chest a million times over if it kept Shane safe. He would stand in front of Shane and protect him from every bullet fired in their direction. He would take the hit because he knew how to deal with it. OR, Shane and Ilya can’t stop arguing over telling the world about their love. Ilya is scared of being outed. Shane hears him, loud and clear, but it’s like his words are suddenly shallow and hollow, coming in bits and pieces as they funnel through one ear and out the other, and he swears he’s listening, swears he’s trying to hang onto every word out of his boyfriend's mouth, but that white hot static is louder than ever. His brain feels fuzzy and his eyes blur and whether it’s from unshed tears he hasn’t noticed yet or for another reason completely, he isn’t sure. He isn’t sure how he got from point A to point B, but all he knows is suddenly he can’t breathe. Suddenly, he’s six feet under, water encasing his lungs as they shrivel and expand into nothing. “I don’t know Ilya, the last time I let you pick something out I got a rash from the dish soap you bought,” Shane huffed out, scrolling through options of sleek looking chairs. “Was not my fault, I just bought the bluest one,” Ilya admitted, completely truthful, before turning to look closer at Shane’s options. “These look like they would hurt my butt,” Shane laughed out, turning towards him. “They’re just to have more seating when the team comes over, not for us.” Ilya looked at him perplexed. “Not for us?” He scoffed. He looked around, raising his hands up. “This is our house, Hollander. Have you forgotten? Are you ill?” Shane met his crazed look. Ilya added, “Your parents seating at their house - all comfortable. Does not hurt my butt. And they have plenty, they want grandchildren.” “Ilya, you are ridiculous,” … or Shane has a hard time giving up control and Ilya is simple.
