One side of his brain is going: this is insane, don't do this, just stay in this room, what can he do? Whether you like it or not, he's hurt you, and chances are you've hurt him too, because you can't read a situation for shit, so what are we trying to do here? Get some fucking sleep instead.

The other side of his brain is going: He's hurt you, and you've probably hurt him too, and what if this is your only chance to talk about it? What if Paris makes the difference?

Five months after Sochi, Shane's set to play a charity hockey game in Paris. So is Ilya.

They run into each other in the lobby of their hotel the night before. Twelve hours stretch out in front of them, and Ilya suggests something different: no phones, no expectations, no past, no hockey. Just the city, and whatever they can be when nobody else is watching.

It's obviously a terrible idea, but Shane says yes, anyway.

“Hollander,” Ilya murmured gently. “Bath is ready.”

Shane cracked his eyes open, staring dumbly at the burly Russian hovering over him where he was still laying in bed.

“…bath?” He croaked, voice raspy with disuse.

“Mm. I ran you a bath. It will make you feel better before you go to sleep tonight. Will help with your sore muscles.”

Shane asks Ilya to fuck him gently during one of their regular hookups, badly bruised from their game. Ilya runs him a bath afterwards, and they fall secretly and desperately in love that way, through whispered confessions and late night conversations while Shane soaks, and Ilya quietly observes him.

  3. The room tilted slightly, and Shane’s throat was raw. He swayed there a moment, scanning the spinning room for somewhere to steady himself – for Haas or Dykstra. Ilya had been right; he should have slowed down, stayed with his teammates. He hadn't listened, and now he was alone, 2 Moscow Mules and 3 shots deep, stuck at the bar and lost in a sea of people. Shane just wanted his husband. The alcohol hadn't done anything to soften the effects of the music and lights encircling him. He felt trapped – suffocated – like his skin was fusing itself to his stiff muscles. The room spun faster, and the Canadian wasn't convinced he was standing upright anymore. His heart pounded in his ears as the music rattled his ribcage once more, an insatiable itch beckoning his blunt fingernails. He wanted to scream. He wanted to rip his hair out. He wanted to tear his clothes off. He wanted Ilya.

  5. Things like this didn't happen to other people; Shane knew that. He’d been alive long enough to experience the confused glances and exasperated scoffs that always accompanied his discomfort with things other people didn't even notice. He would not fuck this up – not because he couldn't handle the way the sheets touched his skin. The burning of his skin spread to his eyes as his vision blurred. He squeezed his eyes shut and scrubbed his hands over his face. He would not cry. The tears fell hot and silent. They pooled at the curve of his jaw and around his chin, puddles of shame and self-contempt. Fucking breathe, he told himself, as he turned the faucet of the shower as far as it could go. He stood watching the water pool around his feet and slip down the drain until he heard Ilya stir. At first, he wasn't sure if he had really heard his name. “Shane?… Shane?” He wanted to yell back, assure Ilya everything was fine, but when he opened his mouth, only a squeak escaped. “Moya lyubov?” He cleared his throat and tried again: “In here.”

  6. Ilya let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. “I want to be perfect for you, Shane. To make up for all the time we lost.”

“I don’t want perfect,” Shane said quietly, stroking Ilya’s cheek. “I want something real. Something that we fight to make work, because we want it so much. Because being together is so much fucking better than being without each other.”

Ten years ago, Shane and Ilya loved each other in secret and let each other go anyway.

Now Shane, captain of the Ottawa Centaurs, is a single dad to four-year-old Ollie, and good at pretending he doesn’t think about the man he lost when they were younger and terrified of the fallout of being caught. Then one chance meeting turns into drinks, lingering looks, old feelings, and suddenly Ilya Rozanov is everywhere again.

Some things, it turns out, never really leave you.

As Shane and Ilya fall back into each other’s lives - and into something softer, steadier, and openly theirs this time — they realise maybe they’re finally ready for the life they used to dream about.

Or: two hockey players who were each other’s first love reconnect ten years later and slowly build the family they always wanted.

  7. After becoming a Boston Raider, Shane was still bracing, waiting for something to go wrong.
Eventually, however, he realizes he doesn’t have to.

  8. It wasn’t his first hockey fight, not by far. After decades of playing, it was impossible to avoid the occasional scrum. It just wasn’t something that Shane purposefully tried to get involved in. He wasn’t like Ilya, he didn’t find joy in pushing and prodding at the other team until one of them snapped and threw a punch. When a scrum did break out, he hardly ever joined the fray, preferring instead to focus on managing the refs and trying to get his team out of the fight with as few penalties as possible. When Shane’s fist connected with Comeau’s cheekbone, Shane grinned. -- Or, the moment Shane realized he played his last game as a Montreal Metro and has to come to terms with everything that means after. Featuring Shane realizing he's not as okay as he seems, and Ilya trying to figure out how he can help.

  9. Shane watches Ilya shove a hand through his hair, waits for him to meet his eyes. “You pretend to want things, pretend I can have things that we both know you won’t let me have,” he says, his newfound self-esteem carrying him past the point of no return. He wishes he’d never discovered it, because it’s making Ilya’s face do something awful.

“Oh, you mean I hurt your feelings?”

Close enough, Shane supposes, his chest aching again. He goes to lift his hand again, sees Ilya zero in on the movement, doesn’t. “I guess so.”

Ilya scoffs, mean and sharp. “So sorry, Hollander, I didn’t mean to make you get so emotional about a casual fuck.”
Asshole. So many times he has lobbed the word at Ilya in exasperation, reluctant affection and disbelief, but now he thinks it with vitriolic anger. “I think you should go.”

Shane finally decides that Ilya's ability to weaponise sex isn't enough for him anymore. Ilya doesn't take it well, but Shane holds firm. Then they start to text about it. Sort of.

  10. How do you fight jealousy, envy, and possessiveness when it’s a unilateral war, when you stand alone on the terrain of that war, or when you don’t even know that it is located inside you?

  13. Ilya opened one of his messages. Have you seen the news? Ilya, call me. Now. Please tell me you already fucking know. Jesus Christ, man. That was it. No context. No explanation. Just panic wrapped in vague bullshit. His jaw locked. “Are you fucking serious right now,” he muttered, thumb scrolling harder than necessary. Say it or don’t, you assholes. The half-answers made his skin crawl. It felt like they were all circling something awful, whispering around it, waiting for him to step close enough to get hit. His chest felt tight now, pressure building, so he did the one thing that made sense. He opened social media. Shane Hollander’s name was everywhere. Or Shane was hurt in ways everyone could see, and in ways only Ilya would carry.

  14. Ilya's hand continues its path up and down Shane's back, and Shane thinks again about how love is sometimes just this: a palm on the spine, moving in circles, waiting for you to come back to yourself. There is no promise of saving you—Ilya cannot save him, they both know this and are alright with it in their own ways—but there is a vow of staying, lingering in order to witness. Touching the bruise so that its pain triggers the memory that you are allowed to be touched. Outside, the snow continues its work of erasure. Inside, Shane's breathing begins to even out, every limb recalling how to be a man at rest rather than an animal fawning and freezing. The trembling subsides, wave by wave, as if Ilya's hand is smoothing it out of him. "Sleep, зайчик," Ilya says softly, his free hand coming to rest in Shane's hair. "I have you." This is not true, Shane thinks, and it is also the only true thing. ⋆ recovery, shane learns, is not a straight line. to begin to understand something, you must first name it.
