The seven days after RFA Shane Hollander signed an offer sheet from Boston were the longest of Ilya's life. They were also some of the best.

  2. “Is that what he does, then?” she asks, walking down the hallway to put the garment bag next to the one already there.

She turns back, and sees Shane looking at her with a furrowed brow. She thought that question was clear, but perhaps not. “Like, philanthropy?” Given what hot boyfriend wears, he’s got to be making some serious buck. Or he was born into wealth. “My friend James dated a Russian socialite for a couple of months, and she just went to art galleries and threw dinner parties,” Ana elaborates. “Her dad’s an oligarch who, like, defected from the motherland in the late nineties.”

  3. “You need to calm down,” Ilya says. “You will wear out your fancy sneakers.”

“Is this a joke to you?!” Shane snaps, turning so sharply that his Rebooks squeak against the warehouse’s cement. “It’s not fucking funny. These guys could fucking ruin everything.”

Ilya clenches his jaw. Shane is scared and he hates that there’s nothing he can do to fix it. Ever since the video landed in both their inboxes, neither of them has had a good night’s sleep.

    or

One year into their relationship a video risks exposing Shane and Ilya’s relationship. To protect their secret, they will need to do as the backmailers demand. But how far are they willing to go? And what if there’s more going on that meets the eye?

  5. "I am… Not great. At swimming." This was something Ilya never would have admitted in any other circumstance, but he'd confessed to worse, earlier tonight.

Shane laughed in his face, bright and loud, the corners of his eyes crinkled. It was hard for Ilya to be annoyed, with Shane's face still cradled in his palm. "No shit, I've seen you swim. Who taught you that terrible breaststroke?"

Flight 771 shouldn't have been any different than any of the hundreds of other flights that Shane has taken over the course of his career, aside from the fact that it was taking him towards his lifelong dream—towards the Olympics.

It shouldn't have been any different.

  7. The truth was, yeah, Shane married Ilya, but he’d married hockey first. He married hockey the second he signed his rookie contract with the Metros, and his courtship began long, long before. And his marriage to hockey wasn’t like his marriage to Ilya. Hockey wouldn’t ever love him back. Ilya wasn’t going to chew Shane up and spit him out at some nebulous point after he turned thirty and before he turned forty, his joints busted and his mouth full of dentures and his brain fucked to hell and back. And that marriage—his first marriage—had always come before his second, illicit shotgun wedding.

It wasn’t ideal, maybe, but that was just how things were. Hell, it was probably the same for Ilya, too. The fuck was Shane supposed to do about it? Nothing, nothing, nothing. He liked his life just the way it was. He didn’t want to do anything different. He still doesn’t. And that’s the worst, most shameful part of it all: at the end of the day, some part of Shane will always wish he could wind back time like adjusting a watch; erase that Instagram post before it ever hit the internet and go back to the life they’d had before; the life that was slowly killing them both.

  8. At some point between getting home and finding the mess in the kitchen, Shane calls the police and his parents in quick succession.

He doesn’t remember those phone calls at all. Blocked them from his memory the second they were over—doesn’t know what he said, what his mother replied—what the operator on the other end of the line asked him.

The only proof he has of ever placing the calls is the record of them in his phone—neatly stacked over-on-another. 911 right below Mom.

Below that, a series of phone calls to Ilya (husband), some barely even twenty seconds long, just short little I love you’s and what juice did you say you wanted from the store’s. Shane actually has to scroll for a while before he finds any other number in his call log.

If Shane were to add all of that data into an excel sheet he’d have proof that Ilya took up about 90% of his call records and yet it doesn’t feel like enough.

  10. “Ilyusha,” Vasilisa says. “We are keeping this up indoors also.”

    “Is sun umbrella. For sun.”

    “There are lights.”

Ilya looks at Shane over her head. He looks exhausted, thinner than Shane likes, and happier than Shane has ever seen him.

“You see what you did,” he says. “Tyranny, everywhere, and everywhere, enablers.”

  11. “I know you’re there,” he spoke gently, proud when his voice sounded nearly confident in spite of the way his hands were shaking under his desk, “I’ve seen you.”

The air in front of him seemed to shimmer in a way that was almost corporeal. Beneath his lab coat, the hair on his arms was standing on end.

Suddenly, so softly that it could hardly be called a whisper, a man’s voice answered, “So what if I am here? What would it matter anyway?”

After Ilya and Shane are outed, Marleau books himself on to the same queer studies course that the Raiders management forced Ilya to attend when he was cancelled for being a homophobe.

It turns out several other Raiders players thought Marleau had the right idea about that. Now around half of the Raiders roster are all sat together in the little classroom. It’s about as chaotic as you would expect. The professor Sandra is forced to add an increasing number of amendments to the ‘Course Rules and Guidelines’ that she never expected to be putting into writing.

    -----
Amendment No. 5. - No, there are no additional course credits for “proving you’re an ally by complimenting your bros in the locker room showers."

Amendment No. 6. - Downloading Grindr will also not get you any extra credits. [ Although if you wish to download Grindr for its intended purposes, I would obviously not want to discourage you in this. ]

Amendment No. 7. - Taking time during games to tell Admirals player Scott Hunter that you think his boyfriend is extremely hot is NOT actually effective allyship within the league. Yes, EVEN if Ilya Rozanov told you it would be.

  17. Ilya Rozanov does not come pre-installed with good communication or healthy coping skills. Is he going to seek out help on his own? Hell no! But when a family member kills himself, fellow Boston Raider and friend Cliff Marleau decides that Ilya is going to therapy come hell or high water. And Ilya... well, Ilya is just playing along to keep the peace. Right? He doesn't need therapy. But if it helps his friend be less worried, so be it.

  18. When Shane was outed half-an-hour before the NHL Draft, he thought it would be the worst day of his life. And when he proceeded to slide all the way into the third round, he wasn’t sure how he would survive. Then his new team banished him back to the OHL for two years until he aged out, and Shane burned at the humiliation.

On his good days, though, Shane could admit that it’d made him stronger. He was a better player now, and more comfortable in himself, and more ready to take the NHL by storm. Every time he’d thought that he was finished, he’d been wrong.

So maybe he’d survive playing on the same team as Ilya fucking Rozanov.

Shane is outed publicly 30 minutes before the first draft pick is announced. Ilya goes #1 overall to the Boston Bears. Shane is picked #65 overall in the third round… also by the Boston Bears.

  19. It’s Ilya who brings it up. He’s in his kitchen, making himself some kind of soup that Shane is already searching for recipes of—it’s called rassolnik. Leaning with one hip against the counter, he asks, “What about your sex dungeon?”

“I don’t have a sex dungeon,” Shane says, both grossed out and intrigued by the idea.

“The apartment, moya lyubov,” Ilya replies, fondness sheathed in annoyance. He slurps loudly, laughing when Shane makes a face at him over their video call. “What will you do with the apartment?”

    “Sell it, maybe.”

    --

Or, Shane doesn't sell the secret-sex-apartment building. He starts renting it out, and somehow ends up with a gaggle of Russian tenants-turned-friends, several stray cats, and one very spoiled hamster.
