"I am… Not great. At swimming." This was something Ilya never would have admitted in any other circumstance, but he'd confessed to worse, earlier tonight.
Shane laughed in his face, bright and loud, the corners of his eyes crinkled. It was hard for Ilya to be annoyed, with Shane's face still cradled in his palm. "No shit, I've seen you swim. Who taught you that terrible breaststroke?"
OR: 2017, All-Star missing scene: after Shane's confession, Shane and Ilya go on a midnight swim. A meditation on love, trust, and the body.

the way you love me by justhockey
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Ilya knows that no one loves the same version of a person; his Shane is different to Yuna’s Shane, who is different to David’s Shane, who is different to J.J., or Rose, or Hayden’s Shane. And while Ilya knows he’d fall in love with every single version, he’s happy he gets this one. Happy he gets the Shane who lets himself be trusting, and vulnerable, and honest. It makes Ilya wish he could have loved Shane earlier - makes him wish he could have known him longer. But he’s just glad he gets to do it now, here, like this. (Or, four times people are surprised by Shane’s clinginess, and one time they completely expect it.)

The front door of the cottage banged open and Ilya and Shane both tumbled out, shoving at each other and darting for the car.
“I told, I carry groceries!” Ilya protests. “First is ‘no carry bags, Ilya’, ‘how’s your ribs, Ilya’, but I am fine. Hollander. Hollander!”
“You don’t even know where the groceries go, there’s no reason for both of us- My parents can carry their own stuff! Rozanov!”
Ilya’s palms slapped onto Yuna’s car door, his breathing slightly elevated, cheeks flushed and a wide boyish grin on his face. “Got here first!”

The decision to invite Carter in his hotel room had been made last minute, and Scott wondered if it wasn't too soon. He had never really came out to anyone, really; no one in his circle knew this part of him except for Kip. And wasn't that the exact problem? He buried himself so deep inside the closet, terrified, that he couldn't even dream of getting out of it.

Scott comes out to Carter before the 2017 playoffs' win.| Alt. Coming Out. Not Chapter 26 of Game Changers compliant

Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Shane thinks this is probably the first - and last - time in his life that he’s ever been excited about grocery shopping. But it’s their first time doing it together, as a couple, out in public where other people can see them. Where, finally, they don’t have to pretend to be something they’re not. It’s such a small thing - insignificant to most people, probably - but it’s a luxury Shane never thought he would be allowed to have.

Ilya knows it’s a bad idea. Of course it is. But everything he’s ever done in regards to Shane Hollander has been a bad idea. So he sends the text, even though they’re playing against each other in just a few hours. Even though it’s reckless, and it’s breaking all their rules. Even though he’s supposed to be rebuilding the distance that Tampa tore down, instead of letting it shrink even further. But he just can’t seem to help himself.

“Good,” Shane says, when he finally finds his voice. “Because I’m selfish.” Ilya laughs. “You are not selfish, sweetheart.” “I am when it comes to you,” he confesses, pulling back so he can look Ilya in the eyes. “I feel like a kid who doesn’t want to share his favourite toy.”

Ilya’s still learning what Shane likes and needs, observing him quietly because Shane’s not so forthcoming with what he wants unless he’s certain it’s what he’s supposed to want. But it’s not until Shane reaches back and grabs Ilya’s hip to pull him closer, pressing their bodies together and taking some of Ilya’s weight, that he realises Shane’s been studying Ilya the same way.
“I’m trying to take care of you.”
“Why?” Ilya says, instead of something safer.
Shane twists over his shoulder to frown at him. “Because I want to? Because you’re tired and sad and not feeling well?”
“Oh.” Ilya pulls his bottom lip through his teeth. “But I…”
“I think maybe we both fucked up tonight?” Shane says tentatively.
“No, is not your fault.” Ilya rubs a hand over Shane’s shoulder and then kisses it, wet and soft. “You’re good.”
Shane hums like he’s not convinced. He turns and drapes his arms over Ilya’s shoulders, still pressed close. “After this, will you…”
“Yes,” Ilya says, his mind sharpening attentively, “Tell me what you need.”Or: They communicate just a little bit better and let themselves be just a little more vulnerable, both with each other and their people.

“You’ll text when you land, right?” Shane asks as he takes an exit ramp labeled Airport Departures.
“Yes. Promise.”
“And you’ll call tonight?” Shane’s throat works over the words, like he still doesn’t trust this new thing between them. Ilya thinks he understands. He also doesn’t know how to trust this love. How can he when it has been trapped in his own heart so long. Neither of them know what the next year will bring. There is so much time before Ilya can have his agent, or his future agent, he will need a new one with no connections to Russia, reach out to Ottawa and hope that they’ll be interested in a future Hall of Fame center. The one thing Ilya is certain of is that he will do everything in his power to make their plan work. He spent his entire adult life lusting after, and then pining for Shane with his whole heart.
“I will call.” Ilya reaches for the hand Shane has left on the gearshift and threads his fingers through his. He wants to say so much, but he has always been better with touch than words, especially when the only shared language was English. “We will talk every day.”
Or, There is a year before Ilya can sign with Ottawa, Shane counts down the days until their forever.

just grab my hand and don’t ever drop it, my love by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-03-07
He feels fizzy, fizzy, fizzy, like a soda can that’s been shaken and cracked open. There’s so much pressure building inside his chest that he can’t possibly keep it all inside. He laughs, just a quiet giggle at first, and then it becomes something louder. Something brighter. Something that bursts out of his chest and cracks through the echoing silence in the bathroom. He has to cover his mouth with his hand to stifle it.
Shane feels happy. Truly, deep down to his bones, happy.
He almost can’t believe it.

30 Thoughts: Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-02-28
"Normally I try to stay away from the off-ice stuff - we’re all humans and this is, ostensibly, a hockey thoughts column - but this thing has broken containment. It’s the biggest story in both Canada and the US. It’s on Good Morning America. Trade talks and other rumblings around the league shut down when it broke. I can’t remember the last time hockey has dominated the headlines so much - if it ever has."
Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov were outed, and traditional hockey media reacts.

“Have you talked to Scott Hunter?”
“No—”
“I did. Briefly, after MLH Awards in June.”
“And… what did he say?”
“Hey,” Scott says, and when Ilya looks up at him he’s watching him with a softer, concerned expression. “Are you okay?”
