  1. It's Fall of 2014 and Ilya Rozanov has cut all ties with Russia. But there's no such thing as a clean break, and leaving isn't as simple as never going back.
    -
Basically a very self-indulgent fic about how hard it would be for Ilya to actually move on from the pain of the past and to go no contact with his family in a timeline where Grigori is still alive. Also, Ilya deserves to be known and loved by more people than just Shane and Sveta. Forced/Found Family here we come.
*Sequel to my canon-divergence fic "To only ever know the cold" (go read that first or this won't make sense!)

  2. The right thing to do with an unjust war is to lose it. The right thing to do in a battle is to win it. Ilya Rozanov has won every battle and lost the war, which ought, by some reckoning, to leave him twice in the right.

He is sent across the sea as the hostage instead, handed over to the very kingdom he spent eighteen months burning in his father’s name. If the heavens keep accounts, they keep them badly.

  3. Hollander watched him through the screen, face flushed and dark eyes half-lidded, heavy from the powerful orgasm that had just rocked him on the other side of the country. “I guess I won’t see you until next season, then.”

Ilya snorted, dropping the towel onto the floor. “I don’t have seasons. At least not the same ones you do.”

    ----

Ilya didn't regret leaving hockey behind. His life was his own now, inconsistent, frustrating, and difficult as it was.

His fascination with Shane Hollander, then, was just that—a fascination, a curiosity about the world that could have been, a glimpse of the life that he might have had. But fascination could grow, when there was somewhere to take root.

    Shane Hollander was a garden.

  4. Ilya wakes up in the early afternoon, in his underwear, with a dry mouth, a crick in his neck, and loud, incessant banging. It takes him longer than he is proud to admit to realize that it’s coming from his front door. He gets up and immediately regrets it. His living room is a mess and the light coming in from the window makes him wince. He does not want to clean today. What he had wanted was a rare, quiet night. Maybe text Hollander to rile him up after his loss the day before. Instead, Marly insisted on coming home with him after his girlfriend dumped him, so he could drown his sorrows. He remembers making some questionable choices after that, and if the state of the house is any indication, he is right.

Oh, that fucker. What did he forget here?

“Marly, you fucking asshole, I swear if you don’t stop—” Fuck. His head. How much did he drink last night? “Couldn’t you wait until practice tomorrow to get—” He opens the door. A small child is looking up at him.

Or: The day before the Tuna Melt Ilya Rozanov finds a child at his door.

  5. Everyone who knows Ilya Rozanov knows how important his family and his gang are to him.

It would surely take something huge to get him to turn his back on them.

  7. “Ilyusha,” Vasilisa says. “We are keeping this up indoors also.”

    “Is sun umbrella. For sun.”

    “There are lights.”

Ilya looks at Shane over her head. He looks exhausted, thinner than Shane likes, and happier than Shane has ever seen him.

“You see what you did,” he says. “Tyranny, everywhere, and everywhere, enablers.”

  8. Shane Hollander enters his rookie season focused on one thing only: playing the best damn hockey he can, and earning a spot in history as one of the greatest players in the league. Standing between him and his goal is Boston’s own promising young rookie, Alexei Rozanov.

Shane doesn’t particularly care about having a rival, but Rozanov seems as good a choice as any. He’s rude, arrogant, obnoxious off the ice and frustrating on it. And he’s pretty damn good at hockey.

Unfortunately, he also has a younger brother, who Shane finds much more interesting.

The Hollander-Rozanov rivalry is alive and well. And caught in the middle of it, is Ilya.

  9. There’s still a big part of him that wants all the same things he used to. The hockey, those other interests, the simplicity of the smaller circle. But there’s a twinge of something else now beside it when he considers it for too long, a bruise he can’t place the origins of. He’d been able to put somewhat of a name to it, after Rose.

He only wishes he hadn’t filled in the rest of the blanks staring down at a grainy photograph of Svetlana Vetrova in a convenience store parking lot in Boston, a bag hanging off of her manicured finger just transparent enough to make out the logo of a First Response as she’d ducked into a sleek, black sports car, driving away with Shane's best worst would-have-been and, presumably, Ilya Rozanov's baby.

Shane feels no particular way about this turn of events. He really, honestly, mostly is somewhat close to believing that, too. It's progress.

"Maybe," Irina said, "I will ask. Maybe, Shane and Ilyushenka would like to go on ice together? Hockey maybe, or only skating?"

"Shane would certainly prefer to play hockey," Yuna said, as Shane stepped into the room, his eyes going suddenly bright when she glanced at him as the word hockey left her mouth. Sometimes she thought it was like having a little puppy hearing the word walk.

"Hockey?" Shane asked, still standing in the doorway, his whole body vibrating a little, "I can have hockey?"

The Hollanders go on a trip to Russia in 1996 to attend a wedding, and Shane makes a friend. In 2008, he meets his friend again. Part of him knows it's his friend, sadly, that part is not his brain.

  12. At twenty-one, Ilya Rozanov is the Soviet Union’s most perfect weapon, a soldier of the Red Machine who has spent three years locked in a silent, jagged war on the ice with Canada’s golden boy, Shane Hollander.

When the Montreal Metros claim him as a "wasted" mid-round draft pick, the rivalry transforms from a professional grudge into a desperate lifeline. On the final night of the 1988 Calgary Olympics, he risks everything, his family, his career, and his safety, to start a new life in the West. Forced into a high-stakes billet under the roof of his bitter professional rival, Ilya must navigate a world where freedom feels like a new kind of prison.

As Ilya struggles to adapt, the crumbling Soviet empire reaches across the ocean, searching for leverage to help pull him back.

OR: What if Ilya fled Russia in 1988 to play for the Montreal Metros?

  13. It’s been a year since Prince Shane Hollander of Canada has heard from Prince Ilya Rozanov of Russia. Until now. Princes to separate kingdoms, influenced by the push and pull of power and politics. Whatever is happening between them? Doesn't change that.

  14. Ilya knows this room. He’s woken up here before, more mornings than he could count. He is here again, which means he failed. Again.

He begins to write. The memories are sharp in his mind now, but soon they'll start to smear and dissolve across his consciousness, leaving only faint impressions that will disappear altogether in a day, two at most. This note, printed on cheap hotel stationery, is the only thing that stands between him and oblivion.

    1. You will meet Shane Hollander today. Don't be an asshole.
    2. June 2009, Draft Day -  go to the hotel gym at 11pm. Use the bike. Bring water.
    3. July 2010 - CCM photo shoot. Make sure Hollander is also there.

  15. Ilya’s mouth quirked, and again his eyes flicked across Shane’s face, assessing.
Shane held his gaze. He’d read the file. Ilya Rozanov was the same age he was, but 26 looked a lot different when it had never had to be responsible for anything. Shane could already tell that Rozanov was going to make his job significantly more difficult for no reason except that he could—and best of luck to him. Shane had worked with difficult principals before, and when it came down to it, the job was very simple: keep them alive, keep your opinions to yourself, and go home at the end of the posting.

  17. Following an afternoon of sex and tuna melts, Shane goes searching for the explicit rules of what being 'friends with benefits' entails. In his humble opinion, they're nailing it.

Once friendship is on the table, Shane reconsiders the usefulness and immutability of the public rivalry narrative. Surely the NHL can make just as much money from a bromance as it can from a rivalry?

A missed call from J.J., a dinner at All-Stars, and an ill-considered mad dash to the airport send Shane's season in a very different direction to the disciplined three-peat he'd been planning back in October.

"This rivalry thing: it was everyone else who said we hated each other off the ice. There’s no rule that says we have to keep doing that forever.” Shane stared outside, past the blinding billboards and down at the streets below. “It was nice. Hanging out, last time.”

He knew what it looked like when Rozanov shut down, when he closed himself off and pushed the world away. He’d finish the conversation abruptly, curt, clipped, and retreat. So Shane knew he’d won when Rozanov finally answered with: “Are we six years old, Hollander? Asking if I want to play in sandbox with you?"

  18. “What makes you so confident you can handle him when Montreal couldn’t?” A reporter asks.

“Because he actually listens to me. Montreal didn’t have a damn clue how to handle guys like him. Me? Oh, I already got this kid under my thumb.”

Once celebrated as the NHL’s most promising young player, Shane Hollander’s rookie season collapses after brutally attacking a teammate during a nationally televised playoff game, leaving him suspended, publicly disgraced, and traded to the Boston Raiders.

Months later, Shane arrives in Boston determined to keep his head down and prove himself. But Ilya Rozanov has already taken an unsettling interest in him.

  19. “Who are you talking to?” Sveta is looking with a raised eyebrow, at Ilya’s delighted face.

“Ah, I am talking to my catfish.”

“What do you mean, your catfish?” Ilya angles the phone so Sveta can see the shirtless picture on the screen.

“This guy is pretending to be Shane Hollander on Grindr. It’s pretty funny. He’s cropped the face out, but he’s using pictures from the billboard next to my apartment.”

Or: Ilya Rozanov is sure he's being catfished- why would the real Shane Hollander be on Grindr, talking to random university of Ottawa students? But the more he talks to Wayne, the more he starts to like him, and the more he wishes Wayne would just come clean so they can finally be together.

  20. For the first time in nineteen years, a sudden, blinding flash of color flooded Ilya’s world.

It was as if a dormant switch inside him had been violently flipped on. His Alpha instincts, usually as dormant and indifferent as the rest of him, surged forward with a fierce, possessive roar that made his blood run hot. The dull gray reality he had inhabited his entire life vanished, replaced by a single, absolute, unyielding mandate:

    That Omega is mine.

Ilya didn’t know his name. He didn’t know his story, or his background. But as his blue eyes locked onto the stunning stranger, watching the way his warm brown eyes crinkled with a soft, gentle laugh, Ilya knew with absolute certainty that he would stop at nothing until that Omega belonged to him.
